The Phillies added some outfield depth Friday night when they reportedly signed David Dahl to a minor league contract, according to a report from Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
A former No. 10 overall pick in 2012, Dahl played in only nine games in the majors with the San Diego Padres last season. The left-handed hitter missed time earlier in the year with a right quad strain and was designated for assignment by San Diego in June. He played most of last season in Triple A in the Dodgers organization, where he slashed .282/.354/.493 with eight home runs and 39 RBIs. He played all three outfield positions for the Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers.
His best season came in 2019, where he batted .302 with an .877 OPS as part of an All-Star campaign with the Colorado Rockies.
Dahl will have a chance to get outfield reps in spring training games with the Phillies. The outfield depth is thin at the moment, with Brandon Marsh sidelined for a few weeks. Johan Rojas, Nick Castellanos, Jake Cave and Cristian Pache are the only outfielders on the 40-man roster. Weston Wilson and Kody Clemens could get some opportunities at the corner spots this spring. SÃmon Muzziotti and Cal Stevenson are the only non-roster outfielders in big league camp.
