The Philadelphia Phillies announced the end of their Dollar Dog Nights on Thursday, axing the promotion after 27 years in favor of “BOGO” nights where fans can purchase two hot dogs for the price of one at $5.
Phillies senior vice president of ticket operations and projects John Weber said last season’s Dollar Dog Nights were “the tipping point,” according to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Matt Breen, with hot dogs flying onto the field in blowout losses and long concession lines throughout the concourse at Citizens Bank Park.
“The unfortunate incidents last year of the throwing of the hot dogs plus the feedback from our fans postgame survey,” Weber said, “the fans told us that it was time for a change.”
However, the general fan reaction on social media did not match that sentiment, with many upset by the ending of the promotion.
Still, some fans understood the team’s perspective after the chaos of last year’s events.
No matter one’s stance on the cancellation of Dollar Dog Night, fans will have the opportunity to buy BOGO hot dogs (with a max of four hot dogs per transaction) on April 2 and April 16 as part of the new Phillies promotion.

I was at one of the games when people were throwing dogs onto the field and around the stands. And it wasn’t even like the Santa snowball incident, no reason to be mad, just privileged people bored with nothing better to do than throw food around. I don’t blame the Phillies for putting an end to that. I anticipated it when I saw it happening and commented to my companion that this was going to put an end to Dollar Dog Night. Sorry to see it gone, because I’m a vegetarian and the veggie dogs were included in the Dollar Dog deal (along with the gluten-free dogs for my father), but this is the reason we can’t have nice stuff.
