The Phillies have signed pitcher Zack Wheeler to a multi-year extension, Buster Olney of ESPN reports.

The deal is for three years and $126 million, according to The Athletic’s Matt Gelb. The average annual value of the deal is $42 million, just behind Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander’s $43.3 million.

He is the first Phillie ever to eclipse $30 and $40 million in average annual salary.

Wheeler, 33, was scheduled to become a free agent after the 2024 season. As Olney notes, Wheeler will obtain his 10-5 no-trade rights, 10 years in the big leagues and five years with the same team, after this season.

His new deal begins in 2025, as Gelb reports. Gelb’s report also mentions that Wheeler may want to stop pitching after the new deal is up, which is why the two sides were interested in signing a shorter deal.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the Phillies will hold a press conference announcing the deal on Monday.

Got Wheels under contract extension. Icing on the cake would be to reach out to Snell for the short term. I’ve got to believe this would give Phillies their strongest opening day roster, EVER.
