Final score: Reds 7, Phillies 4

A sixth-inning collapse from right-hander Seranthony Domínguez and the Phillies bullpen wasted a tremendous performance at the plate from first baseman Alec Bohm and another strong outing from starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull.

Domínguez was charged with four earned runs in 2/3 of an inning as Philadelphia lost, 7-4, against the Reds at Great American Ball Park on Wednesday night. He allowed the game-tying run on a Santiago Espinal RBI single, before Matt Strahm allowed two inherited runners to come around to take the lead.

The late collapse came after Bohm and Turnbull led the Phillies to an early lead. Bohm recorded four hits with two RBIs, and Turnbull continued his excellent start to the year by allowing just one run and striking out eight over five innings.

The Phillies battled back with an RBI double by Whit Merrifield in the seventh, but Cincinnati’s Spencer Steer hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth to help the Reds close the door.

Highlights

  • Alec Bohm put the Phillies ahead in the top of the first as he shot a single into right field to plate Trea Turner. He was thrown out on the bases trying to advance to second.
  • Bohm added another run for Philadelphia in the third as he laced an RBI double down the left-field line. Kyle Schwarber came all the way around from first base to score.
  • Reds right fielder Will Benson got one back for Cincinnati in the third as he homered to right-center field off Turnbull.
  • Johan Rojas put the Phillies up 3-1 in the sixth with an RBI single.
  • Espinal hit a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game, before Benson hit an RBI single and Elly De La Cruz roped an RBI double to make it 6-4.

Notes

  • Turner’s streak of 41 successful stolen base attempts was snapped in the fifth inning as he was caught too far off third base on a failed double steal attempt by Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson.
  • Bohm now has a .988 OPS with 21 RBIs in 25 games.
  • Turnbull has a 1.33 ERA in five starts. This was his first outing in which the Phillies lost.

  • So, I thought they would split two games each with the Reds, as I find in these early days a total lack of consistent middle innings pitching and clutch hitting.

  • Soto, Pinto and Seranthony all must go.. 1 good outing out of every 4 is NOT going to cut it in the Majors.

  • Dominguez has an ERA of 9.72 How is he considered "relief"?? I'm sure there are guys in Lehigh that could relieve better than 9.72

  • Walker needs a break. It's clear the manager don't like him everyone else gets time but him. He will be ok. No Stott no Marsh come on manager is over rated.
