Minus the degree to which they wear their emotions on their sleeves, Alec Bohm and Ranger Suárez are oddly comparable as baseball players. Neither is particularly flashy. Neither will wow you with jaw-dropping tools. Neither is at the forefront of the national baseball discourse.
And both are playing like superstars.
Not stars. Superstars.
Bohm and Suárez continued their respective superstar turns on Saturday in a series-clinching victory over the Padres in San Diego. The former provided everything the latter needed with one swing of the bat, but he provided more for good measure. The 27-year-old third baseman went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, backed up by eight more dominant innings from the 28-year-old southpaw and the Phillies earned their 10th win in 12 games.
Highlights
- If anything has been lacking from Bohm’s game this season, it’s the home-run ball. One swing into his evening, it wasn’t lacking quite as much.
- Bryce Harper drew a bases-loaded walk to stretch the lead to three in the fifth, and Bohm — stop us if you’ve heard this before — came through with runners in scoring position to add on.
- Nick Castellanos had another tough day at the plate — three strikeouts, though he did single — but made a sweet play deep in right field for the second out in the sixth.
- Trea Turner doubled in the seventh for his third hit of the ballgame. He’s hitting .348 this season.
- It couldn’t last forever. Suárez’s scoreless streak ended at a remarkable 32 2/3 innings with a two-out homer in the eighth by Eguy Rosario.
- Jeff Hoffman threw the final inning of the ballgame, striking out the side to end it.
Notes
- Bohm’s OPS climbed to 1.030 in the win. At the time of this publishing, it is the fourth-best in all of MLB.
- Suárez’s scoreless streak, as The Philadelphia Inquirer‘s Scott Lauber notes, ends as the third-longest in franchise history.

Great games by Ranger & Alec. They are both unconscious right now.
Schwarbsy goes 0/4 with 4 Ks and a walk, dropping his average to a Schwarber-esque .190. You know when it was up there around .230, .240 I was starting to think we had Ty Cobb leading off, but now Kyle’s come back down to earth. But he did get a walk, and he does hit leadoff HRs ever 7-ish games or so, so there’s that. I guess that’s OK despite the worse-than-Steve-Jeltz average.

Look, if you can’t hit you better play good defense or you can’t play & Castellanos. Is playing good defense. Ranger keeps proving he’s a stud. If the manager believes he’s so smart how come no one can teach nick not to swing at pitches low and out side. 3 years now.
