Former Phillies fan favorite Jean Segura retires

Former Phillies fan favorite Jean Segura has called it a career, his agency, CAA Sports, announced on its Instagram on Wednesday.

Segura spent the 2019-22 seasons with the Phillies, beginning his tenure via the J.P. Crawford trade with Seattle and capping it off with his first and only career playoff run.

He quickly enamored himself among the fanbase, a sentiment that grew across four mostly productive years in Philadelphia. He hit .281 with a .755 OPS and strong defense at second base.

His legend grew in October, less for overall production than for a few moments etched into the lore of those drought-breaking, Cinderella Phillies. He did a little bit of everything — some bad, more good — in Game 3 of the NLCS. He got the whole run started with a come-from-behind, go-ahead two-run single in the ninth inning to deliver the Phillies a Wild Card Series opener win in his playoff debut.

The writing was on the wall for Segura’s Phillies future the whole latter half of that season, though, with the team destined to land one of the four marquee shortstops in the upcoming free agency cycle — ultimately, of course, Trea Turner. Segura landed with the Marlins the following year, a stint that was even more unsightly than it was short. He was traded to Cleveland and immediately released about a quarter of the way through his two-year contract. He signed with the Orioles on a minor-league deal late in 2024 but struggled in Triple-A.

His baseball career ended in style, with Segura leading the Leones del Escogido to a Dominican Winter League championship in a wild, four-hit Game 7.

Segura was a two-time All-Star (2013 with Milwaukee and 2018 with Seattle), and his best season came in a 6.6-bWAR 2016 with Arizona, in which he racked up more than 200 of his 1,545 career hits.
