The Phillies added an extra reliever to their organization on Thursday afternoon, claiming right-hander Andrew Hoffmann off waivers from the Diamondbacks. He was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, the club announced.
To make room on the 40-man roster, IronPigs slugger Felix Reyes, who played 12 games for the Phillies in April and May, was recalled and immediately placed on the 60-day injured list. Reyes had been placed on Lehigh Valley’s seven-day IL last weekend after breaking his right wrist on a hit-by-pitch.
Hoffmann, 26, was designated for assignment by Arizona on Monday. He made his big-league debut for the Kansas City Royals last season and was traded to the Diamondbacks for outfielder Randal Grichuk. In 19 career major-league appearances, he has a 6.85 ERA. Hoffmann had a 6.08 ERA in 12 games for Triple-A Reno this season.
The 25-year-old Reyes hit 21 home runs with an .830 OPS in 85 games for the IronPigs in 2026, leading the Triple-A club in homers. After a breakout season in the minors last year, Reyes got a shot in the majors as a short-side platoon left fielder who could also play first base. He hit a home run off former Cy Young winner Chris Sale in his first career at-bat, but his overly aggressive approach did not translate in Philadelphia; Reyes hit .158 with no walks in 38 plate appearances for the Phillies.
Reyes will now officially be sidelined for the rest of the Triple-A season as the Phillies brought in more pitching depth. Before claiming Hoffmann, the team signed former All-Star left-hander Nestor Cortes to a major-league deal and optioned him to Single-A Clearwater.
