Is Tonight’s Phillies Game Cancelled?

April 3, 2024:

More forecasts: Atlanta 30 day forecast

Hopefully this will help you determine if tonight’s Phillies game will be rained out, delayed, postponed, or played. The most favorable weather conditions for the Phillies are day games with temperatures between 74 and 83 and winds cross-field right to left.

The right to postpone the playing of a game is controlled by the home club with the exception of the final series (that begins on or after June 1) between two clubs, at which time the responsibility shifts to the Umpire-in-Chief.

Once a game has started, the Umpire-in-Chief determines if a game should be suspended, when it can be resumed or if it should be terminated because of bad weather or unfit playing conditions.  In 2020, non-official games (fewer than 5 innings) were paused and restarted at a later date, rather than replayed completely.

The Official Playing Rules provide that when a game has been temporarily suspended, umpires must wait at least 30 minutes before calling the game.

“Game Called Because of Rain” by Norman Rockwell appeared on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post published April 23, 1949. The depiction is also known as The Three Umpires, Tough Call and Bottom of the Sixth.

The original is part of the collection of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The teams involved are the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

  • No such luck. Phillies had to play the game in occasional light rain and of course they lost. Cross state rival, Pittsburgh Pirates owned the Phillies winning the series 3 out of 4 games. To cheer your self up, sing Annie's song ..The sun will come out tomorrow. A new day to be hopeful for the Phillies (smile).

  • it would make sense for the Phillies to have a distinct part of their website with a game on/game off message. That way people who are coming in from out of town (a lot of fans) can put it in their phones, tap--get instant information rather than scrolling through a lot of other sub-sites.

I'm sure many others would want to know--restaurants & bars that get a lot of traffic game nights, SEPTA, etc. It's tough to find and in the 2110's shouldn't be.

  • The question on any one's mind if they're planning on going to the game tonight vs the Cardinals, Is the game going to be canceled tonight with the forecast of heavy rain till 9:30? When will they let you know, after you've made the drive in horrible traffic?

    • They didn't cancel/postpone last night with heavy storms all around the area and tornado watches everywhere. So doubtful.
