Open Thread: Utley's Amazing Feat

Sorry I’ve been away all day — I’ve been hobnobbing in Woodstock, NY without computer access.

Anywho, open thread to continue the day: David Murphy had the report from Chase Utley’s appearance on “Hot Stove.” Time to appreciate that Utley played most of 2008 on a bad ankle and still had the best season of any second baseman in baseball.

bankle repeat without added pain, winning tastes great; bats pounding, matt stairs also enjoying.

Going back to a previous post that you had, Tim, about how the Phils will lose some more games this year than last due to the losses not being countered by the additions (I forget how you calculated it), and everyone is saying so many people had career years. Well, Utley had a career year too, with an injury none the less, imagine how many wins may be added because Utley can play 100%. Also, what if Victorino, Werth, etc. weren’t having career years, what if they’re foreshadowing that incredible potential we all know they have. That’s one scary team.

Also, gotta give mad props to Utley for his persistence and playing through an injury.

Chase Utley is the man. Best offensive and defensive 2B in baseball.

Are there any more reasons for why Chase Utley will go down as probably one of the top 5 best athletes to ever play in this wonderful city of ours?

I think it was Todd Zolecki.. but maybe David Murphy.. anyway, one of the Phillies writers pointed out that almost all of the Phillies regulars hit below their career batting average last year, and the Phillies still won.

Only Werth and Victorino had “career years”.. something like that, but Howard, Utley, Rollins, Feliz, Ruiz, and Burrell all had mediocore years in terms of their batting averages.. interesting

Look forward to seeing what a healthy Chase can do next year. If he is capable of topping this year’s performance he’d be mind-blowing.

the blog “batter’s box” ranked all GMs using a system in which Ruben Amaro Jr came out ranked 8th.

here’s the link for those of you interested…Andrew Friedman came out ranked #1, which is hard to argue.

  14. Griffin

    January 30, 2009 at 5:41 pm

I don’t know how Amaro can be judged before the team even plays ONE game under his guidance.
Interesting article though, but Amaro shouldn’t be ranked until next offseason.

I have a HUGE man-crush on Utley! Will go down as argueable one fo the best 2bmen to play if he stays healthy.

This is more like it.. I am so pumped about this year. Yes, Chase Utley is perhaps the best 2nd baseman in baseball and we have NOT see all that he has to offer.
Yes, Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins can do sooo much better with more hits.
Yes, Jason Werth and Shane Victorino have just started to show us what they really can be.
Yes, no one can have a much worse year than Carlos Ruiz did behind the plate. Whether that means he will do decent behind the plate or be subplanted by someone else (my money would be on Marson) it just has to get better.
Yes again, Pedro Feliz normally hits at least 6 to 8 more hrs a year and finally a big
YES, it will not take Ibanez long at all to help us forget that we miss Pats hits, or walks and especially his 3 month hiatus from hitting the ball!
Toss in the fact that Jenkins is a much better hitter than he displayed last year, one more year approaching pitching immortality for Cole and a year that Blanton will presently surprise us all with a solid season.
I look for a terrific offensive showing this year and pitching that does not quite meet up to last years standards. That said, the pitching will be enough and the hitting will be more than anyone can handle.
Top to bottom, this is the team to beat!

brooks, if i’m not mistaken, ruiz is one of the best defensive catchers in the league

I ran out of adjectives for Utley. I love the way he plays the game. The same can be said for the Phillies in general. Right after they won the championship they were already talking about the next one and I honestly think they can do it. I don’t think there is a team in baseball that they cannot compete against.

  24. Brooks

    January 31, 2009 at 5:34 am

Tyler, good defensive catchers are half the package. If Ruiz would hit .260 who wouldn’t be happy?
Watching Carlos Ruiz come to bat with or without runners on meant it was time for crab fries..

all I have to say about Utley is the play against the braves. It was a couple years ago. He was on second. Howard batting. Howard hit a dribbler to the pitcher. Picked it up and threw Howard out at first. Meanwhile Chase came rounding third like Willie Mays Hayes from Major league. The first baseman realized this and it was bang bang. SAFE. Utley you are the man..Harry K…..You have given me joy wacthing you Chase. Not since Lenny Dykstra have I felt the same passion. Keep it up

brooks, i must have misunderstood what u were saying when u said “behind the plate.” I took it to mean in defensive terms, but u were talking about the whole package apparently. & that being said, yes, i agree 100000% with u, if he could hit like .270ish (& maybe teach howard what the hell he did to beef up the avg), i would be afraid to face the phils if i were other teams

Don M I heard that stat about the averages and wonder if we can possibly be a better hitting team this year.I really cant wait to find out.

It’s hard not to be excited about this upcoming season… Utley, Howard and Rollins could potentially have better seasons (Utley and Rollins were injured for a decent chunk of the season and Howard could be more consistent). Feliz and Ruiz are due for better years. Ibanez is an upgrade. Werth and Vic should give us what we expect (solid defense and a spark at the plate when we need it). The only question mark is pitching… do we have enough and who will emerge? Overall, we shoud be in for another great season!!
