Rollins At DH Vs. Japan

Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino join team USA in taking on Japan in a World Baseball Classic semifinal. Rollins is batting third and playing designated hitter (despite his Gold Glove at shortstop in 2008).

Brian roberts a shot to lead off. huge for the us to get ahead early like that.

also rollins won gold glvoe in 2007 as well, but we all know the gold glove award is a popularity contest. for christ sake abreu won a gold glove

  2. Manny

    March 22, 2009 at 8:53 pm

J-roll just got a hit and stole a base… Go Jimmy + team USA!!

  3. Tim Malcolm

    March 22, 2009 at 8:53 pm

Five bucks Wright does NOT drive in Rollins.

  4. Tim Malcolm

    March 22, 2009 at 8:56 pm

No, I shouldn’t be like that.

Anyway, he did do it. Good.

  5. Jim

    March 22, 2009 at 8:56 pm

    agreed tim

its wierd actually “rooting” for david wright

i have no qualms if team usa loses though, i want rollins and rino back

  6. Manny

    March 22, 2009 at 8:56 pm

Tim, you just lost 5 bucks.

  7. Evan

    March 22, 2009 at 9:05 pm

Wright got the RBI and just made a sick defensive play on a leadoff bunt. Throwing error on the next play and I was just typing some mad ups for him!

  8. Evan

    March 22, 2009 at 9:07 pm

Eh maybe that was on Derosa. Did they say who it was, I missed it…

  9. Jim

    March 22, 2009 at 9:07 pm

Judging from gamecast, it looks like oswalt is having trouble with his control, the japanese team has too many good hitters for that, they are loaded with singles hitters who will ikiill him with small ball

  10. Jim

    March 22, 2009 at 9:11 pm

On other base ball related news

did anyone see the contrast is baseball today??

nolasco and the marlins no hit the tigers

while the royals and angels combined for 15!! home runs

  11. Geoff

    March 22, 2009 at 9:17 pm

Dice-K has been wild. 30 pitch 3rd inning after quickly getting out the first two batters. That was on derosa though, he had the wrong foot on the bag and missed wrights throw. derosa doesnt play first base though. dice-K up to 70 pitches in the 4th. He gets like that sometimes. Hell either dominate or hell labor and overpitch and nibble. Still, wouldnt mind if the Phillies had Dice-K.

Oswalt has been pretty good so far. I also agree that they did the right thing by saving Peavy for Korea and going with a pure power pitcher like Oswalt against the Japan lineup.

Why does this manager continue to refuse to let Jimmy play SS every game in this competition? Jeter is the perfect DH (well, Dunn is but they somehow think hes still an outfielder). Rollins should be at Short tonight, but I hope it doesnt come into play. I also hope that they leave Heath Bell in the bullpen this time.

  12. Geoff

    March 22, 2009 at 9:18 pm

OK NOW Oswalt is struggling. Noone up in the pen yet.

  13. Geoff

    March 22, 2009 at 9:24 pm

Ok get Oswalt out of there. NOW. Hes done. This inning is a mess. Pissed now…

  14. Brett

    March 22, 2009 at 9:30 pm

  15. Geoff

    March 22, 2009 at 9:31 pm

This is ridiculous why cant Team USA ever get good starting pitching! He got lit up!

  16. Brett

    March 22, 2009 at 9:35 pm

All the good starters are at Spring Training.

  17. Geoff

    March 22, 2009 at 9:38 pm

Yeah but come on…youd think theyd be able to get somebody. Even Derek Lowe would have done better.

  18. Kev

    March 22, 2009 at 9:42 pm

The japanese and south korean players are just more committed to winning this tournament, they have the best players they could possibly have on their team, where the USA, doesn’t have close of what they could have on their team if everyone decided to join the team

  19. Brett

    March 22, 2009 at 9:44 pm

Osawlt pitched a solid game last week, didn’t he? That’s the problem with small ball. A single or double here and there doesn’t seem like a lot, but then you look up at the score board and you’re down by four all of a sudden.

  20. Evan

    March 22, 2009 at 9:48 pm

That last pitch Dice-K through was way off the plate

  21. Evan

    March 22, 2009 at 9:48 pm

  22. Jim

    March 22, 2009 at 9:59 pm

    kev is right

for the japanese and korean players this is there biggest stage.

for the americans, its just some extra practice before the season

  23. Manny

    March 22, 2009 at 10:11 pm

I’m happy J-roll is getting some good at bats against guys like Dice-K

  24. Manny

    March 22, 2009 at 10:24 pm

    Now Jimmy gets a triple!!

  25. Tim Malcolm

    March 22, 2009 at 10:24 pm

    Triple for Rollins.

  26. Jason B.

    March 22, 2009 at 10:24 pm

J-ROLL!!!! Triple!!! He looks like he is in mid season form.

  27. Jason B.

    March 22, 2009 at 10:25 pm

    U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!

  28. Jason B.

    March 22, 2009 at 10:26 pm

What in gods name was Wright swinging at?!?

  29. Evan

    March 22, 2009 at 10:31 pm

    Swinging at air apparently.

  30. Jason B.

    March 22, 2009 at 10:37 pm

Well, it’ll be nice to Jimmy and Shane go back to sunny Florida.

  31. Fuhs

    March 22, 2009 at 10:42 pm

Victorino prepping to pinch hit! About time, too…

  32. Evan

    March 22, 2009 at 10:47 pm

Good AB by McCann, someone needs to get a run in this inning or its over.

  33. Evan

    March 22, 2009 at 10:48 pm

And as I say it, 2 RBIs for Derosa on a triple

  34. Fuhs

    March 22, 2009 at 10:49 pm

What the heck? Victorino pulled back in for Eva Longoria?!?

  35. Tim Malcolm

    March 22, 2009 at 10:49 pm

Vic out for Longoria. Bad move. Remember the last time Vic had a man on down two at Dodger Stadium …

  36. Jason B.

    March 22, 2009 at 10:49 pm

Eva is hitting in place of Vic…. Doesn’t Davey know that Vic is clutch in LA?

  37. Fuhs

    March 22, 2009 at 10:50 pm

I’m glad we are on the same page… so are the announcers.

  38. Jason B.

    March 22, 2009 at 10:50 pm

That was a stupid move… even the anouncers think so.

  39. Jason B.

    March 22, 2009 at 10:52 pm

    Bad move Davey… Bad move.

  40. Jason B.

    March 22, 2009 at 10:53 pm

Maybe Roberts can make up for his earlier error.

  41. Fuhs

    March 22, 2009 at 10:53 pm

And they all swing for the fences…

  42. Jason B.

    March 22, 2009 at 10:54 pm

The announcers are laying it on Johnson and Longoria. That made no sense. Righty-righty? what was he thinking?

  43. Fuhs

    March 22, 2009 at 10:56 pm

Well, at least J-roll gets the chance to be the hero.

  44. Jason B.

    March 22, 2009 at 10:57 pm

And they still put Vic in center. Boy, Johnson botched those moves. What an idiot.

  45. CT

    March 22, 2009 at 11:04 pm

dammit, jimmy would’ve nailed that throw

  46. Ryan S

    March 22, 2009 at 11:04 pm

Wow. This is why I don’t understand playing the obvious inferior defensive shortstop in the field. Both Jeter and Rollins are in the lineup. Do you really need to play Jeter in the field?

  47. Ryan

    March 22, 2009 at 11:05 pm

Rollins would have made a better throw and us would only be down two if America really cared (added by Mobile using Mippin)

  48. Manny

    March 22, 2009 at 11:07 pm

Seriously, how could you not let Vic get that clutch-at-bat!

  49. Ryan

    March 22, 2009 at 11:08 pm

Bull**** by jon miller saying the wide throw was not jeter’s fault (added by Mobile using Mippin)

  50. Fuhs

    March 22, 2009 at 11:10 pm

Oh my GOD! Adam Dunn sat down and watched the ball roll by!!!

  51. Evan

    March 22, 2009 at 11:11 pm

    WTF was that Dunn!

I wish the USA had taken this tournament seriously.

  52. Big E

    March 22, 2009 at 11:13 pm

I got so pissed that Jeter is at SS, I typed into Google, “why is jimmy rollins dh?” and it brought me here. So why is Jeter playing at SS, while Gold Grove Rollins plays DH?

  53. Manny

    March 22, 2009 at 11:13 pm

OMG.. you just don’t get to the semifinals and take a crap like that in the ninth inning!!

  54. Georgie

    March 22, 2009 at 11:16 pm

Why bother playing in this thing if you’re not going to try and win?

  55. Tim Malcolm

    March 22, 2009 at 11:16 pm

Big E: Because Jeter has heart. And he’s the captain. And Davey Johnson is scared to just sit Jeter.

  56. Georgie

    March 22, 2009 at 11:17 pm

    Jimmy looks pissed!

  57. Fuhs

    March 22, 2009 at 11:19 pm

And J-roll will not see an out tonight

  58. Manny

    March 22, 2009 at 11:19 pm

Another hit by Jimmy… looking good J-roll!

  59. Big E

    March 22, 2009 at 11:20 pm

Well, another hit for Rollins. Yeah, well, if Davey Johnson was managing to win, and not kissing Derek Jeter’s ass, this would be the tying run.

  60. SJ Mike

    March 22, 2009 at 11:22 pm

At least Rollins during the classic has looked like he is back to his season form, getting hard base hits and on base.

  61. Tim Malcolm

    March 22, 2009 at 11:24 pm

Now I think Rollins/Vic have some nightmare fuel for Wright/Longoria/Jeter and Co. Let’s go boys, come on back to Clearwater.

  62. Georgie

    March 22, 2009 at 11:25 pm

Well, good for japan, they definitely deserved the win.

  63. Manny

    March 22, 2009 at 11:25 pm

    Try 2013, Davey Loser Johnson

  64. SJ Mike

    March 22, 2009 at 11:25 pm

These Japanese (and Eastern pitchers in general) pitchers have some nasty stuff.

  65. Fuhs

    March 22, 2009 at 11:25 pm

Well, at least the Phillies can look forward to having two players who played actual baseball in this tournament come home.

  66. Georgie

    March 22, 2009 at 11:26 pm

Can I just say I’m thrilled we didn’t get Adam Dunn.

  67. Fuhs

    March 22, 2009 at 11:27 pm

Seriously, Adam Dunn would get a major benching if Charlie Manuel had a say

  68. SJ Mike

    March 22, 2009 at 11:28 pm

Georgie, I don’t think they were even sniffing Adam Dunn. Just know now that our lefty heavy lineup just needs to pull the ball down the right field line against Washington all season since he obviously wants to dog it in the field.

  69. Georgie

    March 22, 2009 at 11:30 pm

And not only Charlie, but the rest of the Phillies wouldn’t put up with that kind of crap, that was a pathetic display by Dunn.

  70. Georgie

    March 22, 2009 at 11:32 pm

SJ, if they were sniffing, they probably smelled the stench from a mile away!

  71. SJ Mike

    March 22, 2009 at 11:34 pm

Nothing is more pitiful as a batter then ending a championship (or tournament) on a called strike 3 .

  72. Mark

    March 22, 2009 at 11:36 pm

baseball classic is horrible. USA does not care. If we did then we would send our top aces. Not these horrible pitchers. They left Oswalt in so he could get more work for spring training. where the asians are playing like its the world series.

  73. Geoff

    March 23, 2009 at 12:06 am

They definitely missed Pedroia and Youkilis, but still…out of all of our starting pitchers they could only get Peavy Oswalt Lilly and Guthrie…come on now. Rollins and Victorino played well all tournament long. Rollins really looked sharp. But there are a lot of guys that blew it off totally. No excuses for Howard to blow this off and be there instead of that fat mess Dunn. Remember: According to the Blue Jays’ GM Adam Dunn doesnt like baseball.

4 runs is enough though with America’s pitching talent. Its a joke that none of them even signed up for the team.

  74. Geoff

    March 23, 2009 at 12:07 am

credit to the guys who did come, but they needed better pitching plain and simple.

  75. Georgie

    March 23, 2009 at 1:02 am

What? Adam Dunn doesn’t like baseball? I would give my eye teeth to be a major league baseball player, that is so lame. Oh, I guess I’d have to be a guy, too, so nevermind!
I really don’t see much point in USA even playing the darn thing if they can’t get some goood pitchers to sign on, but they don’t want to get injured, so it’s a catch-22, we’ll never win it as long as that’s the way it is.

  76. Fuhs

    March 23, 2009 at 1:09 am

At least we don’t have to worry about another one for four years. And maybe they’ll fix some of the problems.

  77. Rob Cowie

    March 23, 2009 at 1:10 am

it didnt help that staff ace jake peavy staff got blown up during every start.why is rollins dhing? why is adam dunn on this team? it’s a disgrace. but,, the final should be another excellent one.

  78. Sean

    March 23, 2009 at 1:22 am

I was at the game, everyone that was for America was cursing every move by Davey Johnson. Adam Dunn was pathetic, and putting Longoria in instead of Victorino when he’d end up playing center anyway made not a lick of sense. The energy of the crowd though was electric, a real blast. The Japanese are a fun baseball crowd. And I got to meet Tommy Lasorda! I had a lot of fun, but there are huge problems with the American team.

First. DAVEY JOHNSON SUCKS!!!! Second. Who are these Pitchers? Third. That’s what you get for starting players from the Mets and Yankees.

Mainly I think Johnson just was lost. He was managing like this was 1987. Leaving Dunn in the lineup with bad at-bat after bad at-bat, should have benched him and put Victorino in left and left Granderson in center. The wind was blowing in toward the 6th and power wasn’t going to win this game. You needed ground ball singles and speed on the bases. Johnson was lost, had no clue. He shouldn’t be allowed to manage a little league team after this crap.

And apparently my dad and myself were on ESPN after J-Roll’s triple. I didn’t see it, my dad’s friend called and told us.

  79. Jason B.

    March 23, 2009 at 7:49 am

You know what’s funny… the one person who looked like he gave a damn on that bench last night was Jimmy. He looked like he had eaten a bad mushroom after the team lost. He was angry. Davey Johnson looke dlike, what? are we done now? He looked like an idiot last night. Next time around… Team USA better pick Charlie. The Japanese will FEAR the “RED DEVIL!”

  80. Rick F

    March 23, 2009 at 10:42 am

Rollins went 4 for 4 with a walk, triple, a run scored and a stolen base. He went 10 for 24 .417BA in the classic and vic batted .250 in limited action. Rollins had 5SB in the classic. Rollins with a huge year this season.

  81. Don M

    March 23, 2009 at 10:59 am

So Japan is playing Korea for the 3rd, or 4th time… ???

Rollins should definitely start at SS over Jeter… but they “need to get their work in” USA would have had Rollins starting at SS tonight if they needed it.

Longoria to pinch-hit off a RHP, instead of Victorino who was already on-deck.. Longoria strikes out and looks foolish in the process.

Adam Dunn, Brian Roberts, and of course Jimmy Rollins all looked good.

Mark DeRosa and Chris Ianetta also looked good throughout..

Thornton on the WhiteSox looked good, but the rest of our pitching staff was weak.

They need to do this while the Arizona Fall League is going on, or the Mexican Winter League or whatever.. do it after the season, and Im sure you’ll have more players willing to participate, because if anything does go wrong, they’ll have time to recover.. or for some guys, its a way to keep their arm fresh.

CC Sabathia and Cole Hamels would go a long way towards making a WBC Final.. more than Jake Peavey and Roy Oswalt
