nationalslogoWashington Nationals (4-14) at Philadelphia Phillies (10-8)
John Lannan (0-2, 4.43 ERA) vs. Cole Hamels (0-2, 9.69 ERA)

Time: 7:05 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia.
Weather: Mostly sunny, 83
TV: The Comcast Network
Twitter: Phillies Nation

A Prince Fielder line drive struck Cole Hamels Thursday, taking him out of what was becoming a very effective start. Though he had given up a home run to Ryan Braun, Hamels had struck out almost every batter he had faced. The flesh wound seemed like a huge ordeal at first; now it’s child’s play considering what the Phils might go through with Brad Lidge. Needless to say, it’s still a scary world out there.

Hamels, still looking for his first win of the season and an ERA that isn’t showing a run per inning, will face the Nationals, a team he has defeated soundly in his past (5-3, 2.04 ERA). In fact, Hamels has practically mastered everyone in the Nats lineup, save Ryan Zimmerman, who is only hitting .270 against Hamels, but with two home runs. Adam Dunn, by the way, is 1-for-8 against Hollywood.

The Phillies offense, meanwhile, has a checkered past with Washington starter John Lannan. He’s the one who hit Chase Utley in the hand back in 2007. Of course, Utley is hitting .455 against the hand hunter. Jimmy Rollins is at .417. Ryan Howard is at .364. And each member of the Phrontrunner Bros. has a homer against Lannan. To be short, the lefties have and can hit him.

That bodes well coming off one of the most thrilling wins in recent Phillies history. For those who missed last night’s proceedings, Howard tied the game with an sixth-inning grand slam, then Raul Ibanez swatted an eighth-inning grand slam to hand the Phils the eventual 13-11 win. Ibanez’s homer pulled him into third place in the NL home run race. He’s seventh in the league in hits and third in runs, and yes, he leads the league in slugging percentage with a .685 clip, four hundredths above Albert Pujols.

Your gamenight beer: Last night we got a double shot of grand slam madness, so tonight we celebrate with a Dubbel. How about Bornem Dubbel? This Belgian brew has a cherry/raspberry taste – a little different for the composition of a Dubbel, but nobody ever said you had to follow rules. This sweet and bitter beer would go well with oysters and fries. Belgian style.

Go Phillies!

I just picked up a six-pack and I’d looking forward to giving it a try later tonight. Packs some kick – 9.7% alcohol.

Nice shot, Pedro. Thank you Alberto Gonzalez!

The Mets and O’s are paying around $400k for the services (and I use that word loosely) of Sheff and Eaton respectively.

I would rather go with 24 players than have Sheff on the Phils. Stairs is so great because he accepts his job. Sheff would never be happy because he thinks he is getting a raw deal on the bench.

  28. Jimmy

yeah, and the phillie killer did it again. Thanks John Lannan. First you plunk Chase on the hand and break his hand, now you lay down a bunt that will probably put Cole on the DL

  41. Paul

I think we could trade cairo for some icy hot and rehabilitation for Hamels.

  47. Matt

    April 28, 2009 at 8:22 pm

I don’t think it’s as bad as we really may think. He clearly walked off on his own power with no sign of any significant limp. He pitched close to 5 excellent innings with clear fastball command and nasty changeup pace. It may be nothing major at all. Let’s wait to hear what it is, then panic. Until then, he showed an encouraging outing today

  48. Sam D.

    April 28, 2009 at 8:23 pm

yeah I agree, but would the Nationals even take Cairo for Icy Hot haha

  49. Phillies Phan SC

    April 28, 2009 at 8:23 pm

Cairo for Lannan AND a case of Icy Hot. That keeps us of the DL and only allows locker room incidents only.

  50. Geof

    April 28, 2009 at 8:24 pm

Again…he was pitching well again. Velocity was back up at 90-92. This bullpen is already tired. Hamels is snakebitten with the injury bug so far. Its like Major League Baseball is forcing him to go on the 15-day DL with all these mishaps.

  51. Paul

Look at the positive, each outing Hamels has been better and better. He gave them 3 strong innings against Mil and 4 1/3 here. If his ankle is okay he may be able to put together a string of strong starts where he goes deep each time. Marlins are losing again, we may be in first place in 2 hours.

  71. Jimmy

    April 28, 2009 at 8:33 pm

Mike W- the reason Rollins was out so long is because he kept trying to come back too early. Maybe we should just count our losses and let Cole get completely healthy before he tries to make a comeback.

  73. cxl72

    April 28, 2009 at 8:35 pm

Cairo is insurance if Utley and Feliz don’t come back from off season injuries….LOL.

Some gurus thought Utley would never be the same and he looks good to me. Feliz looks the same too. There we were lucky, Hamels unlucky. With all that were on pace for 90+ wins.

It must suck for Cairo to know that you’re the 25th guy and can be cut any second. Still making good dough and a nice problem to have.

  74. GWFightinsFan

    April 28, 2009 at 8:35 pm

So just for the sake of conversation, let’s say we do put Hamels on the DL (as we probably should, because as we learned with Rollins last season its best to just let the person rest their ankle instead of trying to rush them back and potentially make it worse by doing so) anyway if we do put him on the DL, who takes his place in the rotation? My vote’s for Happ, as he’s been solid so far from the bullpen, and after 15 days, if Park is still crappy we can put him in the pen and just leave Happ in the rotation…

  82. Sam D.

7 abs for Cairo he has swung at the first pitch every time except for one

  83. Matt

    April 28, 2009 at 8:41 pm

ok, so if it is just a sprained left ankle, that’s most likely a 15-day DL “incarceration.” It could have been way worse, especially with the severity of how tweaked his ankle looked initially. Who knows what’ll happen, but a sprained left ankle is very recoverable, and much better than ligament damage, or a broken bone.

  84. Keith

    April 28, 2009 at 8:41 pm

hmm maybe Cairo will bat this inning

  85. Kyle

    April 28, 2009 at 8:41 pm

  87. Georgie

    April 28, 2009 at 8:42 pm

He looked like the rubberband man when he went down, all legs and arms. I’m not saying he’s fragile, but with all that’s been going on with him so far, maybe a DL stint would be the best thing…..

  88. Geoff

    April 28, 2009 at 8:42 pm

Cairo has 7/8 at bats with no hits and no batting average. total waste of roster space. its happs turn in line to get plugged into the rotation if hamels hits the DL, then you bring up a bullpen arm to fill the 25-man spot – someone like Gary Majewski.

The callup/replacement order for starters is something like: happ, carrasco, and then whichever of stutues, drabek, brummett or worley is the most rested. i dont think they are interested in calling up kyle kendrick or drew carpenter AT ALL. Knapp is still too young, and needs to season a bit. hes only 18/19 i think.

Jack Taschner has one minor league option left I think – hed go down to AAA when JC Romero returns. Or…if Eyre tanks out theyd remove him. Romero could be a huge addition when he returns. However, the Phillies are going to need to bring up some pen help soon – I agree with Tim there. The bullpen issue is always solved from within first, and if that fails then you try and trade for it. There are ALWAYS serviceable relief pitchers available in July/August…

June 19-21 Baltimore v. Philadelphia @ Citizens Bank park. I will have to take a weekend trip for this one.

  123. Sam D.

    April 28, 2009 at 9:01 pm

I just can’t wait to face the yankees in their new ball park, but by that time I hope our pitchers get on track or there will be 30 total home runs that series haha

  124. Manny

    April 28, 2009 at 9:01 pm

I hope he hangs in there so that we get to boo him and OWN him at CBP… but the Orioles could be better off dropping him and bringing someone (anyone!) up from their minor league team.

  125. Manny

    April 28, 2009 at 9:03 pm

    Durbin still pitching? Woah

  126. Keith

    April 28, 2009 at 9:03 pm

it must suck to be a Nationals fan.

  127. Mike

    April 28, 2009 at 9:04 pm

Wait, what? Durbin is out pitching again? Not that I’m complaining, mind you.

  128. Sam D.

    April 28, 2009 at 9:04 pm

Maybe the Orioles will trade for Cody Ross and make him a pitcher and send Eaton out.

  129. Geoff

    April 28, 2009 at 9:05 pm

If Durbin can finish the game…that counts as a save…3 innings of relief or more for one guy holding a lead also counts as a save

  130. Phillies Phan SC

    April 28, 2009 at 9:05 pm

I personally won’t talk about the Nats fans, we had some baaaaaaaad seasons and I remember it sucking to be a Phillies phan then… One day we may hate the Nats and the Mets both LOL

  144. christopher

    April 28, 2009 at 9:11 pm

although the hamels injury obviously sucks, it doesn’t feel surprising at this point with how his starts have went. it’s been a great game otherwise, and i can even enjoy watching dunn hit monster shots (as long as they’re solo shots while we still have a 5 run cushion). otherwise durbin did a hell of a job in there and helped take a bad situation for the bullpen and minimize the stress.

and then ibanez hits another homer! what a start for raaaaauuuuuuuulll.

Actually, get your reading capability, play some “Hooked on Phonics” and realize I don’t care the mets are winning, and said nothing about that in my post. You just continue to prove how uneducated, incompetent and jealous you are of our team. We still have a better record than you. We still are in a higher division standing. We still are the World Series Champions. And the Mets still can’t seem to make the playoffs.

Yeah, life must suck to be a Phillie fan.

@Jenn: to get rid of the trolls, you need the following:

    1) Firefox (Mac, Windows, whatever)
    2) Greasemonkey extension
    3) Killfile script for Greasemonkey. A little “kill” link appears next to trolls, and when you click it, their comments just disappear.
