Phillies Nation Podcast 24: Victor Rojas

Welcome to the Phillies Nation Podcast!

Victor RojasPat Gallen is joined today by Victor Rojas of the MLB Network just hours after the Mark McGwire interview in which he admitted to using performance enhancing drugs during his career.

Victor sheds some light on the situation, saying that his candor was self-serving because of his new job with the St. Louis Cardinals.  On the flip side, he thinks Big Mac left the door open on too many issues and had an opportunity to close them by simply saying he took them to get an edge over the competition. Until players are completely open, Victor says, there will always be questions surrounding players who dance around the topic without hitting it head on.

As far as the Hall of Fame is concerned, Victor isn’t sure much will change with this confession.  He does believe that more and more retired players who are linked to steroids will follow suit to try and save face and win some people back.  Victor does believe Pete Rose should be in the Hall, and that it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have an asterisk or plaque symbolizing those who may have cheated.

Rojas is one of the lead anchors for the MLB Network, both as a studio host and play-by-play voice.  Before joining the new baseball-only network, Rojas was a voice for both the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks.  Before taking his skills to the booth, he was the GM for the Newark Bears of the Atlantic League.

Jim Bouton, author of the classic baseball book “Ball Four”, brought up an interesting question. What is a more serious offense, juicing the ball/bat or juicing the player? I think juicing the equipment.

I am happy to see that Pete Rose is still an issue. Pete has paid enough for his questionable conduct, now it’s time to pay him his due for his between the lines play. The Hall with Rose would make a powerful philosophical statement that baseball and the overwhelming sentiment of its fans can override the actions of necessary and important laws in special scenarios. No ifs, ands, or buts, Pete Rose is a colorful and unique HOFer (so is Gil Hodges) who also just happened to also have a lifelong addiction to and talent for probability theory.

For those who don’t already know, Victor Rojas is a son of former 1960’s Phillies icon Cookie Rojas. Cookie was primarily an infielder who could also play all outfield positions and hit around .300 at least some of the time. He came from Cuba and played every position including pitcher while in Phillies red. He was a fan favorite playing in Philadelphia and Kansas City, and he was definitely one of mine.

MLB network reminds me of my pre 12 year old mindset that was dominated 24 X 7 by baseball. The commentary and special interest programming provided by this channel are addictive.

Love MLB Network… best channel on TV for sure. Much better than the NFL Network- better cast, better appearance, better content… just better. Nice job lining up Rojas…
