Gameday: Phillies (1-0) at Nationals (0-1) – Phillies Nation
Gameday 2010

Gameday: Phillies (1-0) at Nationals (0-1)

Philadelphia Phillies (1-0) at Washington Nationals (0-1)

Cole Hamels, LHP vs. Jason Marquis, RHP

Time: 7:05, Nationals Park
Weather: Clear/Warm, 80
TV: Comcast Network
Twitter: Phillies Nation

It’ll be hard to duplicate what happened on Opening Day, but the Phillies certainly will give it a shot tonight.  After an off day that gave us time to reflect on the exceptional Roy Halladay performance, Cole Hamels will look to turn over a new leaf of his own.

Hamels will look to put 2009 behind him as he steps to the rubber for the first time since the World Series a year ago.  Everyone knows this season is a huge part of the maturation process for Cole. Can he put those demons behind him?  Only time will tell.  It is known, however, that the Phillies need him to be Doc’s right hand man in the rotation.

Jason Marquis is the Game 2 starter for the Nats.  The 30-year old righty is 5-3 lifetime against the Phils, and is coming off of a 15-win season a year ago with the Rockies.  As our own Corey Seidman eluded too yesterday, the Nats are putting a lot of pressure on Marquis to be their man main after giving him a hefty contract to come to D.C. He’s probably, at best, a number three starter, but that’s the pitching situation in Washington.

Offensively, the Phillies put on a show and gave Doc plenty of run support in their opening game.  The surprise came from Placido Polanco who flexed his muscle early and often.  His grand slam proves just how sweet it must be to hit behind Jimmy Rollins and in front of Chase Utley and Ryan Howard.

One guy to keep an eye on is Raul Ibanez.  He slumped badly this spring, but did notch a hit and crossed the plate twice on Monday.  Raul is 1-for-6 lifetime against Marquis, but overall has hit .386 lifetime against Nats pitching.  Look for a quick breakout from Ibanez.

Today’s Lineup: Rollins (SS), Polanco (3B), Utley (2B), Howard (1B), Werth (RF), Ibanez (LF), Victorino (CF), Ruiz (C), Hamels (P).

KenzingerYour Gameday Beer – Hoegaarden Witbeer

On what will be a very warm evening up and down the I-95 corridor, it’s best to drink something lighter and refreshing, without giving up taste.  In comes Hoegaarden with its citrusy, light-bodied flavor that is infused with some coriander spice and hints of orange peel. The Wheat Beer is unfiltered, but it does not affect the taste. If you’re unfamiliar, it’s like Blue Moon, but in my opinion, slightly better. Enjoy. – By Pat

GO PHILLIES!

I just saw a stat that Marquis has a 3.50 ERA against the Phils since ’07.

I’m more excited for this game than for opening day because I want to see what Cole can do. I’m thinking positive.

    I’ve had Hoegaarden….it’s good!

Hamels tonight: 6 IP, 3 earned runs, 7 Ks
Bullpen: no runs given up and Madson gets the save
Offense: 6 runs, either Raul or Werth goes yard

Go Phillies!! Just over an hour til game time. I’m pumped!!

First post of the ’10 season! Overslept the Opening Day, came in late to it, saw the replay and whoa boy! The doc is in!

All eyes on Cole to see what he can do and I’m thinking he’s got it. We shall see in a very short time!

Hoegaarden is the best. Love it. Had it right after I turned 21, my father took me to some pub in center city. I wish I remembered the name of the place.

Right now I am starting a 6 pack of Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy. One of my all time favorite beers, available April – August(I believe)

Glad to see some new faces here on the game day thread at PN. Hoping to see some of the regulars soon.

Let’s do this King Cole. New year, new you.

Unfortunately, we have Verizon Fios…..so no Comcast NETWORK availability for me. CSN has the stupid Sixers game. Who cares!!
Oh well, I’ve got radio coverage….it’s all good!!

    ——

I’ll have to try the Leinenkugel Summer. The winter beer I had back in February was good.

    ——

Well, we got one run out of the bases-loaded, no out situation at least.

Thanks, Ed. Tonight, I’ve got Wolaver’s Oatmeal Stout. It comes in a mixed case with an India Pale Ale and a brown ale. Kind of pricey and I’ve only seen it sold by the case….but it’s worth it.

    ——

Not a good start for Cole!! C’mon….bear down.

    April 7, 2010 at 7:29 pm

    Ok Ok. Good inning Cole.

  23. Ed R.

I dont believe it has made an appearance yet.

  29. Keegan

    April 7, 2010 at 7:45 pm

According to Franzke, that second swinging strike on Willingham was a cutter. It was clocked at 86 while most of his changeups are 80-81 so I’d tend to think so?

  30. diz

    April 7, 2010 at 7:46 pm

My friend raves about hoegarden, will have to try it. I do enjoy blue moon.

I’m keeping up with the game via MLB gameday, pitch by pitch. I don’t have comcast. :/

  31. RashGordon18

    April 7, 2010 at 7:48 pm

    Diz:

Not sure what provider you have but double check your channels. Comcast lost a lawsuit, they can no longer deny other providers access to TCN. I know FIOS has added it to their lineup but not sure about any others.

Hoegaarden is fantastic but pricey. Totally worth it.

  33. Brooks

    April 7, 2010 at 7:53 pm

Good news is his fast ball has gotten to 92 – the bad news is we still dont see the curve or the cutter yet.
Note – Heyward (Bravos) hit an rbi double.

  34. Brooks

    April 7, 2010 at 7:54 pm

I’m looking at MLB and they are reporting his breaking ball to 86 mph. Could be!

  61. Brooks

    April 7, 2010 at 8:29 pm

Somebody pop this Desmond creep… Cole gets shook and he definitely loses control

  62. Brooks

    April 7, 2010 at 8:30 pm

If Cole holds true, we should see a walk now.

  63. Ed R.

    April 7, 2010 at 8:31 pm

Cole will be lucky to go 5 tonight.

  64. diz

    April 7, 2010 at 8:31 pm

His sinker and changeup are doing the most damage tonight. Needs to keep those going. He doesn’t seem to have the best control on his curveball tonight. He’s got to keep his head up, I have phaith.

  65. Chuck

    April 7, 2010 at 8:32 pm

Yeah, the Howard error….and he comes apart. Geez!!

    Yes!!

  69. Ed R.

    April 7, 2010 at 8:36 pm

Anyone else excited at the prospect of a guy hitting .300 + in front of Chase and RyHo?

Cause I am just giddy with joy.

Polanco is going to make this line up scary good.

As I say that, Chase just hit a blooper to score Polanco.

  73. Burgundy

    April 7, 2010 at 8:37 pm

I believe that Cole will have a better year than last. Tonight is not an example of improvement. Over 75 pitches in four innings. Cole needs to buckle down. I think the fifth inning will be his last. Although his hitting looks pretty clutch.

  74. Mulvi

    April 7, 2010 at 8:37 pm

Tyler Walker warming up and sweaty as ever!

  75. Ed R.

  79. diz

    April 7, 2010 at 8:43 pm

now just to keep at least a 3 run lead over the nationals for the rest of the game.

  80. Ed R.

    April 7, 2010 at 8:43 pm

I really wish we still had Tyler Walker. I am probably the only one but I do.

  81. Chuck

    April 7, 2010 at 8:44 pm

The Polanco signing was HUGE!! But, I’ve been saying that all winter on here….arguing with people that basically said, “Ruben, what are you doing??!!”

  82. Chuck

    April 7, 2010 at 8:46 pm

Yeah, Walker is one of those guys that can really come in and settle things down. Hopefully, we’ll be ok in that category!

  83. Brooks

    April 7, 2010 at 8:47 pm

    Def!!

  84. Ed R.

    April 7, 2010 at 8:47 pm

I was good with the Polanco signing. I preferred Beltre, still do but I will take Polanco and be happy with it.

  85. Brooks

    April 7, 2010 at 8:49 pm

Phils started scoring in the 4th on Monday – more runs tonight early on.

  86. Brooks

    April 7, 2010 at 8:51 pm

Another walk for Cole – anyone see pen action?

  87. Dan S

    April 7, 2010 at 8:51 pm

depending on you verizon fios plan you might get masn which is the nationals network and has the game

  88. Chuck

    April 7, 2010 at 8:52 pm

We sacrificed glove with Polanco…but his bat will do wonders for this lineup…..and he won’t exactly embarass himself at 3rd, either. Beltre was the “sexier” pick…and, yeah, getting him would have been sweet….but I think that Polanco will prove to be a nice upgrade over Feliz (who I would have been ok with again this year)

  89. Brooks

    April 7, 2010 at 8:52 pm

Cole at 90 pitches with no outs in the 5th –

  90. John

    April 7, 2010 at 8:54 pm

Too many BB’s…Hamels has no control. Lets hope it’s first game jitters. Nice job of working the count by the Nats on the other hand. Get your Schilling towels ready for Contreras!

  91. Burgundy

    April 7, 2010 at 9:03 pm

I can’t see Cole lasting more than six with a pitch count already over 100. I am optimistic. Pleeeeeese God, help our Cole !!!! Polanco is the ultimate team player and he is really happy to be back in Philly. A great signing by Ruben Jr.

  92. Tavian

    April 7, 2010 at 9:04 pm

Cole has something to prove. As for Big Brown — it’s really good having him around.

  93. Brooks

    April 7, 2010 at 9:10 pm

    Woah that was close

  94. WFC010

    April 7, 2010 at 9:16 pm

Honestly, I didn’t think that Cole looked THAT bad. He held the Nationals to 3 runs, and only 2 of them were really his fault.

He didn’t look GREAT mind you, but he seemed to at least hold it together for the most part.

Have phaith folks, and hopefully Hamels will have phaith in himself.

  95. teejvee

    April 7, 2010 at 9:20 pm

    What’s the deal w/Ibanez?

  96. Brooks

    April 7, 2010 at 9:21 pm

That is what counts most WFC – it just seemed that Cole got shakier when things did not fall in place (like Howards error)…

  97. Brooks

    April 7, 2010 at 9:26 pm

    We’ll see about Raul now…

  98. Ed R.

    April 7, 2010 at 9:28 pm

Ibanez struggled mightily during Spring training and it appears to have carried over?

I mean, it is the 2nd game of the season, what can you really gauge from that? He did just work a good count and got an RBI.

  99. Brooks

    April 7, 2010 at 9:30 pm

The man produced – count it

  100. WFC010

    April 7, 2010 at 9:31 pm

I am actually LESS worried about Raul now than I was a few weeks ago.

Also he just had a nice sac fly!

  101. Chuck

    April 7, 2010 at 9:33 pm

Durbin looks awesome out there tonight!

  102. WFC010

    April 7, 2010 at 9:35 pm

    I miss Sweatmaster Walker!

J/K…kinda, although he would’ve been handy to have in this years bullpen.

  103. John

    April 7, 2010 at 9:43 pm

Watching Walker sweat always made me think of George Costanza and the cotton unis…

  104. PhillyGirlinMI

    April 7, 2010 at 9:43 pm

Durbin & Pudge together again, somewhat. Reminds me of the 2006/2007 Tigers…back when they were actually good.

Walker did sweat a lot..I never noticed before..thanks for pointing that out. Now why didn’t we keep him? Was he arb eligible?

  105. Ed R.

    April 7, 2010 at 9:47 pm

No, he was not arb eligible, they just didn’t think they needed him. I was/am a Walker fan and wished they kept him, especially now since their pen is a mash unit.

  106. WFC010

    April 7, 2010 at 9:48 pm

The only better than the endless “Hey, is that Tyler Walker?” jokes, is when Tyler Walker actually IS pitching.

Also I have no idea why the Phillies didn’t keep him, especially when we need all the bullpen help we can get.

He was never a GREAT pitcher, but he’s a solid reliever who definitely could have been a nice guy to have this year.

  107. Ed R.

    April 7, 2010 at 9:49 pm

two games in a row there have been Yankees Suck chants at a Phillies and Nationals game…I am sure that was started by fans of our guys and it clearly makes no sense at all.

  108. WFC010

    April 7, 2010 at 9:53 pm

Actually the “Yankees Suck” chants DO kinda make sense, since plenty of Phillies fans are screaming for Yankees blood after last years World Series. Even Charlie seems to want us to take them down in a World Series rematch this year, but we’ll see how the season turns out for us AND the Yankees for that matter lol

  109. WFC010

    April 7, 2010 at 9:54 pm

As for why the chants would be at a Nationals game, I guess people are just getting in some early Yankees hatred, regardless of what teams are playing that day.

  110. PhillyGirlinMI

    April 7, 2010 at 9:55 pm

    Oh no…Nats are hitting again!

Too bad about Tyler. Don’t think he would have been expensive to keep.

  111. Keegan

    April 7, 2010 at 9:56 pm

Who is this guy and why does he suck terribly?

  112. Griffin

    April 7, 2010 at 9:56 pm

ugh, Baez stinks. We had to give this guy 2 years?!!

  113. WFC010

    April 7, 2010 at 9:57 pm

    ARGHHHHHHHHHH a triple, that bastard!

Well, so much for closing the game out with the Nationals kept to 3 runs!

Oh well, we still have a pretty comfortable lead still.

  114. Ed R.

    April 7, 2010 at 9:57 pm

No sorry the Yankees Suck chants make absolutely no sense at a game in which the Yankees are not involved. I understand the Phillies wanting to get them back, heck so do I, but at a Phillies and Nationals game? Really?

Makes about as much sense as a Phillies Suck chant at a Rays and Orioles game.

  115. diz

    April 7, 2010 at 9:57 pm

should have left durbin in for the eighth before bringing in baez. imo.

  116. WFC010

    April 7, 2010 at 10:00 pm

Uh oh, the Nationals apparently discovered what situational hitting is!

  117. Ed R.

    April 7, 2010 at 10:00 pm

You know Charlie just wants to strut out that new fit look and not play musical pitchers.

I love listening to the Nationals announcers. They sound so envious of this line up, pitching staff, manager, and fan base.

Man, Mets are coming back after being down 6-2. When the Marlins’ defense get absolutely godawful?

This is the first time I’ve heard them and I’m pretty impressed. They seem to do a nice job of being excited about the game in general. But, if your doing a Nat broadcast, I guess it’s a matter of trying to make it sound as competitive as possible!

PhillyGirlinMI!!! No kidding!? I’m stuck in freaking East frickin’ Lansing!!!

I’m not sure if I agree about letting Madsen bad here.
The Phils do have more pitchers in the BP but one last chance (probably) to score

You gotta let Madson bat so he can get a save! My fantasy team needs a Madson save!

Hey, E. Lansing pretty fun..at least when I stumble over there from time to time 🙂

This Dibble guy is on MLB Homeplate so I’m used to him. But yeah, I can’t imagine calling games for this team 162 times a year…

    Madson was just adorable batting.

To comment on the “yankees suck” chant, I was at the game and it was started because there were yankees fans there in jerseys and hats!
