Gameday: Phillies at Nationals, Opening Day

Philadelphia Phillies (0-0) at Washington Nationals (0-0)

Roy Halladay, RHP  vs. John Lannan, LHP

Time: 1:05, Nationals Park
Weather: Sunny, 80
TV: MyPHL 17
Twitter: Phillies Nation

Holy smokes, it’s time to go. Baseball season is upon us and Phillies Nation is down in Washington D.C. to celebrate the opening day festivities.  President Barack Obama.  Roy Halladay on the mound.  A new season in the making.  It’s all happening at Nationals Park.

It’s Roy Halladay’s first start as a Philadelphia Phillie. Opposing him is John Lannan for the Nationals.  Last season, Halladay was one of the finest pitchers in all of baseball, as he went 17-10 for the Toronto Blue Jays.  He took on the finest in the American League East and will go to the improves NL East.  His first opponent is the lowly Nationals who won just 59 games a season ago.  It appears as though they will be a tick better in 2010, but are they any match for Doc and the vaunted Phillies lineup?

Lannan went 9-13 a year ago for Washington, but did have a very respectable 3.88 ERA.  His first line of business is to deal with Rollins, Polanco, Ultey, Howard….good luck.  On top of that, thousands of Phillies fans will be taking over the stadium to make his job that much harder.

It’s opening day – it’s what you’ve been waiting for all winter.  Enjoy the festivities and sit back and relax: Phillies baseball is here.

Today’s Lineup: Rollins (SS), Polanco (3B), Utley (2B), Howard (1B), Werth (RF), Ibanez (LF), Victorino (CF), Ruiz (C), Halladay (P).

KenzingerYour Gameday Beer – Yuengling Traditional Lager

We’ll be drinking this at the tailgate in D.C., so you should have one too (provided you aren’t at work or if 1 pm isn’t too early for you).  It’s a staple of Philadelphia tailgates and regional bars.  It’s LA-GAH YEOOO! You just ask for a Lager and you get a Yuengling. Nuff said.  Enjoy it with a hot dog and baseball. It’s all you need. – By Pat

  67. Bobby D

    April 5, 2010 at 2:25 pm

Roy’s RBI was a little dribbler between the mound and third that Lannan couldn’t field.

    Big inning Phils!!!

  68. Geoff

    April 5, 2010 at 2:26 pm

  72. Chuck

On the radio, L.A. made the point that Halladay WILL give up his share of hits…..but that he had the FEWEST baserunners allowed last year because he rarely walks people.

Last season: 239 innings, 234 hits, only 35 walks.

  88. bfo_33

    April 5, 2010 at 3:23 pm

I know it’s the first game of the season, and against the worst team in the division (maybe the league), but where is the hole in the line-up? Everbody with a hit, even Roy. Jimmy patient at the plate (has he ever walked twice in a game?). Polanco’s salami was meaningless, but 6 rbis is a heck of a day. Howard groving one off a lefty in April. They could score 900 runs this year (they may score 150 against the Nats alone).

    Love that Polanco small ball!

Did not see it but the numbers look good. Two walks for JRoll, no Ks for Howard – both excellent markers for the future.

    Halladay as advertized.

    161 to go!

  107. Don M

    April 5, 2010 at 4:46 pm

I loved Polanco’s at-bat in the 9th . . . . fouled-off multiple pitches until he finally served one into RF, down the line.. he’ll do lots of that this year, which is why he’ll become a fan favorite again.

you would think Herndon was a little nervous.. he didn’t LOOK it, but he left a few pitches up that got hit. But overall, a nice MLB debut for him to get out of the inning allowing zero runs. The two-seamer he threw for a called-3rd strike was FILTHY

I hope that him and Bastardo can get into a nice groove.. they will probably see lots of action over the next few weeks until Romero & Lidge get back

  108. Repeat!

    April 5, 2010 at 4:46 pm

Yes sir I was at the game. Good seeing you on PN for another season. They had metal detectors at all of the entrances. Every single person had to go through it.

Never been to D.C before but I would imagine that had more to do with the President being there than it being an every day thing.

Police, Homeland Security, Secret Service, CIA, all of them were out in full force. It was nuts.

    April 5, 2010 at 5:15 pm

You guys absolutely took over Nationals Park, on their opening day no less. It even prompted a response from Selig, check it out, from ESPN game recap – ‘Commissioner Bud Selig tried to put a positive spin on the disproportionate number of Phillies fans in the ballpark. “I think it’s great for the sport, I really do,” he said. “There’s enormous interest, obviously, in Philadelphia and the fact that people travel as much as they do now. … It’s only a testament to this game’s popularity.”‘

Its going to be one helluva great season

  111. NJ

    April 5, 2010 at 7:05 pm

I think the Nats can only be described as a nicely formed turd, you can have that brief few moments of admiring it before you realize what a piece of crap it actually is…

Looking forward to the Phils and Halladay getting stuck into a real team

  112. Jimmy "Runt" Hoffmann

What a game. I can’t say this is the worst I have ever seen the Nats play, there were no outlandish errors (they only had 1). The Phillies pounded the Nats. 13 hits, 9 walks and an error – 23 men on base? Are you kidding me?
It was a great day and a good time. Our bus was hosted by Mr. Gallen who, aside from a quirky personal choice movie on the way home (“The Love Guru”), was affable and engaging.
Thanks to PN for putting this together. I’m hoping there will be more trips in the near future and highly recommend all of you who were not able to attend to go to at least one of these games, you wont regret it.
Definitely Phillies fans owned National Park today – almost to the point where it was embarrassing. The stadium itself was nothing special, it will be good to get back to CBP. They know how to handle a crowd!

I really wish I could have been at the game with all of you, but hopefully I will get my chance during the next event Phillies Nation will host. The game was great even without being there, but I can only imagine how much more amazing it’d be in person. Great start to the season at any rate!
