2010 Gameday

Gameday: Phillies (21-13) at Brewers (15-20)

Philadelphia Phillies (21-13) at Milwaukee Brewers (15-20)

Joe Blanton, RHP (0-2, 4.97 ERA) vs. Chris Narveson, LHP (3-0, 5.06 ERA)

In the grand scheme of things, I think we all needed a Phils game like last night’s 9-5 win. The outcome was never really in doubt, and while it lacked the drama of certain other Philadelphia-related sporting events from yesterday, it was a pleasant way to spend an evening. Jamie Moyer, looking waaay too comfortable in the 1980s-era road blues, prevented the Brewers from hitting like Harvey’s Wallbangers even though they were dressed like Harvey’s Wallbangers.

Today, Joe Blanton makes his third start of the year, relieving a previous paucity of portly pitchers in Philadelphia. Blanton has so far not pitched badly, keeping the ball down and not walking very many, but his strikeout rate, even in this small sample size, has dropped far below his rate from last year, which contributed to 2009 being a career year for the righty.

In other news, for all the hand-wringing about the performance of Exxon Wilson Valdez and Paul Hoover, the two managed to drop a combined 3-for-8 with four runs scored last night. With Jimmy Rollins and Carlos Ruiz perhaps only a few days from returning, we’ll see how these two career minor leagues hold up.

The Phils will face 28-year-old lefty Chris Narveson today. A former St. Louis Cardinals prospect, Narveson has bounced between the rotation and the bullpen in parts of three major league seasons. His fastball, which tops out around 90, forces him to rely on three other pitches, a slider, a curve, and a changeup, to get batters out. Narveson, while appearing to be almost unbelievably average on paper, does sport a 3-0 record in three starts and nine relief appearances. We’ll see how that goes.

Tonight’s Lineup: Victorino (CF), Polanco (3B), Utley (2B), Howard (1B), Werth (RF), Ibanez (LF), Valdez (SS), Hoover (C),  Blanton (P)

Your Gameday Beer – BrewDog Sink the Bismarck

Coors OriginalThis one goes out to Paul Hoover, who before resurfacing with the Phillies, served as president of Delta Tau Chi fraternity at Faber College. BrewDog is most famous for its Tactical Nuclear Penguin, a double-cask imperial stout from Scotland, which was, at 32% ABV, reputed to be the strongest beer on Earth. After a German brewery responded with an even stronger beer, those plucky Brits put out Sink the Bismarck, a 41% ABV offering. That’s about the strength of your garden variety vodka. I’ve never had it myself, but to quote Animal House, I anticipate a deeply religious experience. – By Michael

Howard is now batting .190 against lefties. This lineup will be seriously flawed without a big right handed bat next season.

ChuckS, why would you want Pat Burrell back?

Blanton’s looking good tonight! And the Brewers pitcher’s looking like crap.

  14. Tracey

(actually, more the Brewer’s defense than the pitcher looking like crap)

Nice quick inning. Do you think Blanton could become the third Phillies starter to throw a CG this year?

  20. Mulvi

    May 15, 2010 at 5:11 pm

I think Pat would offer less than Dobbs. Dobbs can play 1st, 3rd or corner outfield positions. Pat the Bat can’t field at all.

  21. wxdavid

    May 15, 2010 at 5:11 pm

Pat for Greg? maybe yeah I can see that… that way you could get some extra power from the bench occassionally…

as Jimmy Hoffa would… 6-5 and pick ’em

Pat won’t be playing the National League unless he’s a bench bat, and he’s been to inconsistent as a DH so I don’t see that happening.

  39. Ted Bell

    May 15, 2010 at 5:44 pm

Burrell is done. Have you looked at his numbers against lefties since he left the Phillies? He hit .202 against LHPs last season, and .053 this year. He can no longer play the field…how could he contribute to this Phillies team?

I love Burrell more than any Phillie ever but I am not sure I would take him back. He can barely play the OF anymore, and as much as Dobbs blows these days, I am not sure how good Burrell would be as a PH. Besides…can you honestly bring back a “legend” who started for a decade in LF and use him just as a PH…look at how well Griffey is doing in Seattle as a part time DH/PH. It’s a lot harder to PH than people understand. The year Dobbs was the best PH in the league was also not coincidentally the year Dobbs got the most at bats thanks largely to injuries to Feliz thus allowing Dobbs to play 3B for a while. Stairs was a good PH here because that season he was the full time DH in Toronto. It is pretty damn hard to be a good PH when you are getting 3-4 at bats a week.

And for the record, a Golden Sombrero is 4 K’s in a game, which Howard does not have yet.

  72. Ted Bell

    May 15, 2010 at 7:00 pm

Please, let’s not refer to Pat Burrell as a “legend” – quotation marks or not. I liked the guy, but he had a very mediocre career (which is not what you’re looking for from the first overall pick in the draft).

  73. Ed R.

    May 15, 2010 at 7:02 pm

Why the hell is Charlie not using Figgy right now? Let him pitch the 8th and 9th and save Durbin for a day when he actually needs him. I don’t get it.

  79. Ed R.

    May 15, 2010 at 7:38 pm

Very true Repeat…very true. Could we please just get rid of Herndon, the guy will never be a consistent reliever, unless you want a guy with a low to mid 5 era in the pen.

ruh roh, maybe I’d better go back outside…..

  81. Phils Phan
