Gameday: Phillies (33-30) at Yankees (41-24)

Philadelphia Phillies (33-30) at New York Yankees (41-24)

Kyle Kendrick, RHP (3-2, 4.80 ERA) vs. Andy Pettitte (8-1, 2.46 ERA)

Time: 7:05, Yankee Stadium
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 73
TV: WPHL

Now we conclude the much-anticipated 2009 World Series rematch, in which the Yankees throw the same three starters, in the same order, that pitched last fall, while the Phillies counter with three starters who weren’t even on last year’s postseason roster. So far, it’s gone OK, with the offshore bombardment of Roy Halladay being followed by a quality showing from the offense last night in a 6-3 win. Tonight, we get Andy Pettitte, one of the hottest pitchers in baseball, whose ERA and WHIP are the lowest they’ve been in five years.

We also get another puzzling lineup decision in a series full of them. First, the Utley/Polanco swap from Tuesday (repeated tonight), then putting Greg Dobbs at DH last night, a move that was met with much heckling in the Twitterverse (Dobbs had a RBI single and run scored in 2 at-bats last night). Tonight, we get Ben Francisco, a capable, if not spectacular, outfielder, in the DH role while Raul Ibanez, who is continuing his rapid and disturbing transition into a statue, mans left field. It’s difficult to know what Uncle Cholly’s thinking, but if it ends up with the Phils taking two of three from the Bronx Bombers in the New Yankee Workshop, I won’t ask questions.

Tonight’s Lineup:Victorino (CF), Utley (2B), Polanco (3B), Howard (1B), Werth (RF), Ibanez (LF), Francisco (DH), Schneider (C), Valdez (SS), Moyer P.

Your gameday beer: Samuel Adams Latitude 48

Credit where credit’s due–those dudes up in Massachusetts are quite creative. One of this summer’s seasonal offerings from the boys who brought craft brewing to the American masses is an IPA called Latitude 48. Essentially, the people up at Sam identified the 48th parallel in the northern hemisphere as the “hop belt”–the ideal place for those selfsame plant products to grow. So they took a bunch of hops from the 48th parallel around the world (American, German, and English hops), stuck ’em in a barrel, and out comes this pleasant, somewhat hoppy IPA, the Boston Brewing Co.’s first since it retired the English IPA. Enjoy.

Go Phillies!

This is going to be a tough match-up for Kendrick against Andy Pettitte, who will someday be in the Hall of Fame. He pitches well against the Phils and is very cagy. I hope we have another grand surprise like Jamie Moyer provided last night. My fingers are crossed.

So I guess if we win 4-3…or something like that….then it means that the slump isn’t over….because we didn’t score 10 runs?? Just making sure.

Last night I punished myself by listening to John Sterling for a few innings. The man is just awful. I think when they convict somebody for a crime they now give the guy an option of going to jail or listening to Sterling for an hour. I don’t think anyone has ever picked the 2nd option.

bart I have to disagree. I do like Any but he will never get into the hall of fame. With the steroids, they will never vote him in. Bonds, Sammy, Roger, Pal, Mark all will never get in. NEVER.

But the Chris Berman is doing the US open. Talk about bad.

Dont forget Sterlings side kick. I am embarrassed for her even if she is so clueless she isnt for herself.

the very problem the Phils bats have had is their not making enough adjustments 2nd and especially 3rd time up, flying out the gate isn’t sustainable.

The slumps about tacking on 1-2+ runs in multiple innings in the heart of the game and thats what you route for…

  16. Bart Shart

    June 17, 2010 at 7:35 pm

Jeff, now that you bring it up, you are probably right. The steroid thing will probably keep him out. Still a damn good pitcher though.

Hey so was Clemons. One of the greatest. I cant take either of them serious anymore. To me they have damaged the game of baseball. Guys like Bonds, MM, and Sammy have done the same. Now we see pitching dominating. Wonder why.

jeff for you n teejvee to meet he would have to leave his parents basement first. How pathetic is his life when he gets his jollys being an asshole on a sports blog. Maybe you should try and meet him , after you beat his ass , do him a favor and buy him his first sexual encounter.

  19. NJ

    June 17, 2010 at 7:41 pm

Pettite’s problem isn’t the steroids so much as he’ll be viewed as a guy who was consistently good but much like Moyer he hasn’t won enough games to warrant serious consideration whereas a guy like Schilling will get the bump most power pitchers who have reached the top get. Considering the lack of hall worthy players from that great Yankee team Pettitte and Bernie Williams really should be considered for the hall largely on their great post-season numbers. Everyone wants championships but no-one cares when it comes to hall voting…

It’s too early for Brown, what can he produce that the Phils haven’t got on the roster? Are you really bringing him up to hit 7th and close the book on Werth by stuffing him in left and alienate Raul. Brown could be a beast if he comes up ready instead of being rushed like Marlon Byrd.

Marlon Byrd was rushed? He struggled his first six weeks but ended his first season hitting .303 with a .363 OBP in 495 ABs. I guess the Phillies should have waited until he was 30 to bring him up. This idea that players are so fragile that a little adversity will ruin them forever is nonsense. The jump from AA to the majors is commonplace now.

NJ I would love to see Brown too but I think it is unfair to bring up a rookie when the team is slumping offensively and expect him to be the fix. That is too much pressure on a kid and if he doesn’t provide that spark he might ruined. It just seems unfair to the kid.

  64. NJ

    June 17, 2010 at 8:22 pm

I get the argument for bringing Brown up now but you do have to care about service time, playing time, role and so on and Brown doesn’t have a place yet. It’s about what he can prove in the majors and he hasn’t proved greatness in the minors in 37 games above A-ball very much like Drabek. Brown is a prospect, a very goood one but he’s not Jason Heyward and we have to remember that and not get overexcited like Brown has a birthright to succeed in the majors, I don’t want to see him screwed up by being brought-up without being in an environment he can succeed, calling him up for a run isn’t worth the risk.

This could be a defining series for the Phillies being able to beat the yankees with the back of the rotation. That said I think the effect on the season of the slump is overplayed and the importance of righting the ship I think will be over-analyzed.

This is the point in the season contenders usually struggle while the contenders that fell off the map start to rebound. The Phils don’t have round to make up in the East so its most important the team stretch their legs out for the stretch and October because I don’t think anyone really believes the Phils will be bad all year and won’t be in a position to make the playoffs…

  73. NJ

    June 17, 2010 at 8:33 pm

Loved the passion there by Pettitte and Cervelli. Didn’t look Howard predictably striking out on a breaking ball down and out of the zone by a left handed pitcher.

why can’t Ryan be clutch in the first half of a season?

Yeah I think everyone in the Western Hemisphere but Howard knew that ball was going to be a ball in the dirt

I guess Chuck because people only remember how to pitch to him(which doesn’t seem hard) in the first half of the season.

Man, we needed those tack-ons last inning … Unless Werth can do something, we’re likely to produce much in the eighth. And then Chad Durbin faces the top of the Yanks’. … We needed those tack-ons.

  192. Brooks

    June 17, 2010 at 10:24 pm

I wonder if that 4 run 9th was enough to convince not only the doubters on this site but the Phillies themselves that they are out of the dulldrums.
Is a 7-1 lead enough to withstand a meltdown? Baez, Herndon, Romero? Go ahead Cholly, bring them all in!

  193. Jeff of Nova

  196. Georgie

    Kendrick was superb again tonight!!

  198. Jeff of Nova

    June 17, 2010 at 10:28 pm

that is what they encourage, them meeting to chat it over to get the call right, they made the right call, but I would have loved Fran getting an RBI, he does get a hit though

  199. Brooks

    June 17, 2010 at 10:28 pm

Brian, Kendrick had his Wheaties today – he was unreal. Went 7 very strong innings = amazing stuff.

WOW. AWESOME. I like this streak MUCH better then the other. @ Brooks, it appears Kendrick may have been eating more than Wheaties! Whatever they fed him they have to do it again. Could be Moyer was PISSED after the BoSox start and wanted to prove he still have a little left in the tank, and Kendrick just couldnt be shown up by a 47 yr old. Speaking of Moyer, the Hustle he showed yesterday running to even some of the pop flys in foul territory is AWESOME. I love that kind of hustle.

Remember that the Red Sox had a HORRIBLE start to the season much like the last month for the Phils.

No one is counting them out especially their fans!

The Sox are 2.5 out of 1st!

We are a much better overall team than the Sox, and have been better the last 2 years

Lets keep the positive vibe going!!!!!

    GO PHILS!

I agree with Jeff of Nova 100%! I am done thinking about what place, and how many games right now. The Phillies should (and appears have stopped as well) thinking about that junk and only concerned about 1 thing. Winning. Let the rest play out as it may.

Actually Jeff they play the Twins first, which I’m pretty sure is a good team, then in the middle of the week they play the Indians, and I don’t think the Yanks are going to sweep up, maybe they’ll take 2 of 3 but not a sweep.
