Seven.

Not a lucky number – not for the 2010 Phillies. Seven is an unforgiving number gauging how frustrating, disappointing and utterly befuddling this season has been. It is how many games the team that was heavily favored to return to the World Series has fallen behind the Atlanta Braves in the National League East.

Ten years ago – even five years ago – being seven games back of the Braves might have been regarded as an achievement. Now it is merely cause for fear, loathing and macabre jokes about enduring 25 more years without a title.

So as GM Ruben Amaro works the phones and rumors swirl about Roy Oswalt coming to Philadelphia in another megadeal (it’s worth noting that Oswalt is a year older than Cliff Lee), the only certainty around the 2010 Phillies is injuries. The seemingly indestructible Jamie Moyer suffered an elbow strain Tuesday night, meaning Amaro is going to be at high risk of developing that rare condition known as BlackBerry Ear as he tries to swing a trade for an arm or two.

In the meantime, the Phillies still have ballgames to play, and lately they haven’t been playing them very well. They easily could have lost all six games since the All-Star break, but even their one win Saturday wasn’t much consolation. The task doesn’t get any easier tonight, with Joe Blanton going up against rookie Jamie Garcia. After getting into a handful of games last season, the 24-year-old Garcia has been an outstanding addition to an already loaded Cardinals staff; his 2.27 ERA ranks third in the NL. Blanton has been inconsistent after missing the first month of the season, though his last start, against the Cubs, was one of his sharpest.

Bottom line: Phillies need a win almost as much as they need another starting pitcher.

LINEUP: Polanco 3B, Victorino CF, Francisco LF, Howard 1B, Werth RF, Rollins SS, Ransom 2B, Ruiz C, Blanton P.

Your gamnight beer: I sessioned this Friday night and it wasn’t bad: Steamworks Brewery’s Steam Engine Lager. It calls itself “arguably the best American amber lager in the world.” Heavy words, but it is a good lager. It pours with a golden-to-amber look, like Yuengling, but tastes much sweeter, with hints of yeast and even some fruit: I noted banana, but it might be more citrus. For me it was a session – can’t pound lagers usually – but for those who prefer Yuenglings and the like, seek this out to try. Goes good with pizza.

Go Phillies!

I do not think the Phils and Roy Oswalt will come to agreement. Roy is asking for too much and will likely hold Ed Wade’s feet to the fire and make him pay the 2012 guarantee. ANd I do not blame Roy one bit.

  3. BurrGundy

… Nor do I blame Ruben Jr. for backing out of this deal. Roy is at the age where he could turn old and lousey very quickly with a sore arm, shoulder, knee etc.

why is somebody using my name. the phillies need to make this trade. who is our rotation. happ we have no idea what we will get. blanton is so up and down. hamels, doc. give oswalt that 16 million. he is earned it. lee will get 20 plus. you already gave bad contracts to raul who is 36 blanton, and lidge. why not to a guy who is proven. by not making this trade you are waving the white flag. thats how i feel about it. the reds are losing. everybody on this team except howard cant hit. amazing.

  16. Bob Myers

    July 21, 2010 at 9:48 pm

The trade is at least keeping some hope alive. It has to be good for us in the short term AND the LONGER TERM. But we don’t look like we’re fielding a 140 Million dollar team lately.

We know we’re better than this. I’m going to choose to forget about Lee, and to be optimistic about whatever the trade brings us.

If Blanton keeps pitching like this (he’s in a groove, finally!) and Happ comes back (he’s looking strong after his last rehab assignment, hitting 92-93 consistently, control is back)…then why get another pitcher?

Our problem is the offense right now more than anything else! Werth just needs to get his $hit together so that this trade talk stops…

I love the Phils, but they have sucked since they got “caught cheating” with those binoculars. It makes me wonder. Our lack of hitting is making mediocre pitchers look like all-stars. Everyone thinks there is going to be a turn around this season. We’ve been waiting since May. Its over. This team is just not good in 2010.

By the way, Blanton’s starting to unravel, and it happens quick. Holliday with a homer and now wait for two more until Charlie decides to pull him.

  50. Psujoe

    July 21, 2010 at 10:24 pm

Joe b usually blows up in the 7th so you have to pinch hit. However, I’ve said repeatedly the phils are Lh hitting heavy. I guess challis wanted to turn the order over.

    Wow Charlie. Wow.

Bases loaded.. 2 outs… when was the last time we had the freaking bases loaded? Blanton’s up… you PINCH-HIT FOR HIM!! You don’t let him *try* to hit…

First of all, he’s Blanton –he can’t hit for his life!– mayyyybe if it was some other guy (Haren and Lee come to mind).. those guys can swing a bat.. but BLANTON! Seriously?

Secondly, you can’t expect too much from Blanton past the 6th inning… he’s been running out of gas.. Pat him on the back, pinch hit RAUL (who’s on the bench for whatever reason while Ben Fran is hitting 3rd!!! –outrageous) or whoever! But leaving Blanton in there? He’ll be lucky if he can finish the 7th without giving up a run or more.

Like I said before, fans should boycott a game during the next homestand to show our anger towards this team. They are the biggest group of underachievers I have ever seen. Amaro thinks he can’t go beyond 140 million selling out nearly every game for two years…just wait until his payroll is slashed when 20k instead of 45k show up to watch this awful group. No fire whatsoever. Absolutely no fight in them.

the philles had their chance to be the team to beat. not just the division or even the NL but in all of mlb. 1st half 2009 even the Yankees appeared a bit intimated by the Phillies. They could have easily gotten both Lee and Doc last July. No way the Yankees, Redsox, Angels or even the bleeping Pirates would’ve made such a dubious blunder. That was a once in a generation if not life opp to snatch 2 of the top 5 pitchers in mlb. You have both fo the 2009 run and all if 2010. At worst both for 2010. No way we lose to Yanks last yr with those two. This was our time. Finally. To brag and boast and be really arrogant and smug. And the kicker?? They both were dying to come to Philly. Easily the moves make us a serious 3 peat dynasty. That window is closed and will not reopen. Not like that anyway The Oswalt poss trade is retarded and makes the Phils organization look even more incompt. I do not want this guy at 16 mill in 2011. Obviously 16mill in 2012 wouldn’t happen anyway. The phils have been chasing the 2009 WS tiltle from the moment Shane grounded out in Game 6.

Even if this team were to somehow pull together and be the wild card team (highly unlikely), with their bullpen and bench there is ZERO chance they’d win their 1st series. This season is over, time to regroup and for Amaro & co. to figure out how to again be a serious WC contender in 2011. Also, a trade for Oswalt would be dumb at this point.

Let’s face it, there are just going to be times in your family or organization when you are are the end of your rope; you’ve tried it all and nothing has worked. What are you going to do, and how are you going to fix things? I state this because the Philadelphia Phillies, my team, are at a stage where they have lost their confidence. They can’t win a game to save their life, and yet, they aren’t that bad a team. What are they going to do, what should they do, and how can we learn from them?

To begin with confidence does not come from success; confidence produces success. Confidence is the calm attitude that if you take a series of steps within a relaxed state, more than likely a good result will ensue. When people lose their confidence, they revert to a state of fear where they forget or lose this attitude.

Success does not breed confidence; if it did, the successful would never fall down. But they do, and often. What success often does is cloud one’s mind with emotion and a sense of euphoria; when this occurs, successful people often loses perspective as to why they became successful in the first place. They become more focused on the end result of success, and its attendant glory, rather than the steps that were necessary to achieve that success. As a result, they lose the fundamental attitude of confidence that produced success in the first place.

Let me repeat, confidence is an attitude, not a result.

You can apply this to yourself and your family when times get tough. If you are pressing, if you are frustrated, relax and return to the basics. Calm down and remind yourself that if you follow the basic rules, success more often than not will ensue.

  181. bacardipr05

    July 21, 2010 at 11:59 pm

    July 22, 2010 at 12:04 am

The Cards beat the Philadelphia Ryan Howards tonight. Sadly, Howard is the *only* offense the Phils have had since the break. I have this sick feeling in my gut that tells me that this is how the Phillies are going to be for the near and distant future: a one man offensive team with 1 good start out of 5 from a starting pitcher, whoever that may be on that night. Rollins is done. Victorino is done. Ibanez has been done for a while. Utley is a question mark when he comes back. Werth is on his way out the door. The bench sucks badly. The only viable offensive threat the Phils have at any given time is Howard (obviously), and you can count on Polanco to get on base and Chooch to show flashes of greatness. On the mound, you have to pray Halladay has the right guy catching him and that Hamels meditates correctly before the game. Every single other pitcher is a question mark all the time. Ugh this only proves that talent alone usually doesn’t win — something is terribly wrong in the Phillies clubhouse.

  183. repeat!

    July 22, 2010 at 12:16 am

. Lack of hrs has exposed this team’s flaws big time. But the problem with this team is that there is no real leadership. Rollins talks a good game. He is always trying to give his teamates tips on hitting during a slump, but he doesn’t even follow his own advice. Whatever that is. Of course as J-Roll goes so goes the Phils. We all know that the Phils winning% goes way up when Rollins scores a run. His abs are just as infurtiating as Jason’s are. If not more because rollins swings at the 1st pitch. And Chase has proven that he is’t much of a leader either. He seems too anti-social on the bench. Espec. during a slump. Then their’s Howard. The 25mill a yr man looked p*ssed with J-roll’s ab following his hr. The Phils need to see more of that. Much more. In 2008 Charlie changed the lineup daily it seemed based on who was hot. He’s doing it again as of late. But for the wrong reasons. 1st no one is hitting besides Howard and 2nd Charlie isn’t doing it right. As someone said. Raul needs to be in the lineup in the three hole. He is playing well and has even hit lefties well. Cholly’s have no ryme or reason. And it clearly indicates that both Charlie and this team is in full panic mood. Charlie is likeable. But he is way too nice. He needs to stop trying to be these guys’ little buddy. We need to see Charlie embarrass these guys for poor abs by benching them mid-game or the next day. Look at the 3rd inn. Howard k’d(he’s white hot right now so i’m not mad at him per say). But he should’ve walked. Same with Werth and Rollins. Phils should’ve had bases loaded nobody out. Instead they go down in order. And Cholly justs sit there. I love the guy. But it’s safe to say that we are all fed up with Cholly’s bone headed managerial meltdowns. From being way too loyal, to mismanging the pitching and his overall stubborness and of course his unexplainable decision making. Won’t go over WS 2009 again. But Cholly mismanged the pitching all post season. His luck finally ran out in the WS. The overall disapp. 2010 isn’t all Charlie’s fault. But there is no excuse for these guys to continue to have such poor abs. Why aren’t they listening?? And what are the consequences for doing so?? None apparently. Listening to Ruben on DNL the other day was maddening. Why didn’t he demand another current impact player in the Roy deal??
