You want a playoff atmosphere? Well, you got it my friend. Tonight the Bank will be rocking – rally towels and all. The Phillies enter with a three game lead over the Braves in the NL East with 12 games remaining, six against each other.

To add to the drama, the Braves scheduled starter, Jair Jurrjens, has been scratched due to injury. 24-year-old rookie Brandon Beachy will start in his place. This move may favor the Braves as the Phils have not done well against guys they have not seen before. Not to mention Jurrjens’ struggles lately. Beachy has spent most of this season in AA and went 2-0 with a 2.17 ERA in 8 games in AAA before being called up earlier this month. He has an impressive 5.29 K/BB ratio – but of course, he has yet to face major league hitting.

And the Phillies have plenty of that. Riding a seven-game winning streak, the Phils have won 11 of their last 12. They are hot at the right time; even if those wins came against the bottom-feeders of the division. Nonetheless the bats are connecting, especially those of Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez. Plus, Cole Hamels is tossing some of his best games of his career. He has given up just a single run in his last 31 1/3 innings and over his last 13 games is 5-3 with a stingy 1.79 ERA.

There is no doubt tonight’s game a big one. Where will you be watching?

Today’s lineup: Victorino CF, Polanco 3B, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Werth RF, Ibanez LF, Ruiz C, Valdez SS, Hamels P

Victory LagerYour gameday beer: Victory Lager
Pure and simple describes this offering from our friends at Victory. The well-balanced German-style lager satisfies the taste buds with roasted malts and flowery hops. It’s a nice substitute for the traditional American Lagers like Yuengling or Sam Adams. Lagers go great with anything, but I particularly prefer a good pepperoni pizza.

GO PHILLIES!

Frank Wren was on XM earlier today and said “Command ” wise Beachy is the best among Braves’s pitchers both in majors and minors. That is what matters.. As long as a pitcher has command he can go against anyone any time.., no matter how fast or slow he throws.

Jurgens it seems struggling with swollen knee etc last few days and flew to ATL for MRI..,

    BTW check this out..,

If Braves go 6-6 rest of the season then

Giants need to go 9-3 to beat Braves
Padres need to go 10-2 to beat Braves
and Rockies need to go 11-1 to beat braves

I like Braves chances .., All I am looking for is 1 game win during this series.

@desi —- sometimes Phils have early problems with guys they havent seen , its usually junk throwers though. If this kids a fastball pitcher and catches the plate too much he’ll get hammered. If he keeps it down and mixes in some kind of offspeed pitch he may be ok. Phils feast on hard throwers its the ra dickeys of the league that give them problems.
I think Braves take 1 also.

  119. BravoMan

    September 20, 2010 at 8:18 pm

My advice to the Braves would be to take Ruiz out somehow. Just like Victorino took McCann out a few years back. Ruiz is already pestering us in the series.

  121. Desibrave

    September 20, 2010 at 8:19 pm

MikeD, I have to totally disagree with you man.., you make no sense saying April games don’t count.., All 162 games count. It will average out over the season. if you don’ win in the beginning then you have to make up for them in the end. What i was talking about was the momentum.., I never believed Braves would make it to this stage after losing 9 games in a row..

miked, Victorino held his head low for one prupose…. to take Mac out. Now, say that comment is dumb if you want, but even Pete Rose never went in helmet first. Sure, he fractured many bodies with his power drives, but Victorino used a weopon…. his helmet instead of his shoulders.

DESI , — I didnt say they dont count , my sentence starts with ” april games count ” read it again. I said it doesnt matter meaning the big picture. If you think a team stinks just because they have a losing streak in april I can only surmise you just started watching baseball. Its not how you start its how you finish , its a 162 game season. Do you know how many bad april’s world series champions have had ? Look it up.

Stanton was lighting us up and I’d never be happy to see him hurt.

When this team is hitting there is no let up in the lineup. I love hearing the national guys talk about it. Last nite Kruky was saying the Phils seem to toy with teams it was great. We know he’s one of us, so what it was still cool. Bobby V tried to interupt him and say “theyre not losing on purpose john “. Kruk goes on to talk about how heavy a favorite they are for the pennant , but you dont have to be a former Phillie to see that.

Desi — your only winning the meaningless season series stat because of that , besides it adds to the point I tried to make to you earlier , april , may , june games absolutely count but Champions do what the Phils have done the last 2 months.

MikeD, You are able to say that because you have a healthy club now., Imagine what would have happend if Howard’s injury happend a week ago and missed the rest of the season and same with utley.

We lost Chipper the face of the franchise when we need him the most. Troy Glaus who lifted the team in may had to go on DL a month ago when we needed him alot,

Losing Medlen and Chipper for the rest of the season affected us a lot.

But we are still here with 2 games lead in Wild Card. I am very happy about that.

I expect Halladay to get roughed up a little tomorrow. He’s gonna have his work cut out for him. These Braves I think will fair better against him this time and have a better idea of how to hit him. Our offense should have little problems hitting a pitcher with an era well over 5.00…we should that is.

Desi, how many Braves have been injured this year?

When you’re finished with that, go tally up the number of Phillies who have spent significant time on the DL this year.

We lost Moyer, who had the potential for a career year (providing he wouldn’t have started tiring after the All-Star break), just like you lost Chipper (one of the greats), only significantly earlier in the season.

Rollins, who was starting to come around in the middle of the order, is still out on the DL.

  341. Philly Texan

    September 20, 2010 at 11:01 pm

Are the Braves fans on here really surprised that Chipper Jones and Troy Glaus didn’t make it through the season healthy?

I could have called that back in April. When was the last time EITHER OF THEM played more than 150 games in a season?

That was always the problem with the Braves. Great starting pitching, but they were trying to get by on the cheap in other areas—relying on aging or injury-prone players. And it bit them in the ass….

Frankly, they’re lucky Wagner and Saito have both been healthy this year. I figured one of them would be hurt.

Anyway, Cole Hamels is a beast. What else can you say?

    Andrew,
I agree J-Roll’s been too injury prone lately, but I don’t think he’s in the Chipper/Glaus category just yet. And I don’t think you trade him. He’s still a big part of this team, especially with the glove (Valdez has been a real lift this year, but he’s not the answer, and I don’t want him playing short in the playoffs.)

Let’s see what Rollins does in the postseason. Next year will be big for him. His contract year and he needs to show he can stay healthy.

  345. BravoMan

    September 21, 2010 at 12:20 am

It’s a game of inches and Hamels should NOT have pitched 8 innings. MeldDud Cabrera is a freakin joke. EVERY pitcher makes him look silly. Prado missed a 2-run shot by a matter of a few ft, which would’ve tied the ball game.

For those that keep bashing Heyward and saying he’s overrated, well, in his defense, that ball was knuckling a bit and was smacked pretty hard. He should’ve had it, but y’all show your ignorance judging him and that play calling him overrated. Come on now!

Hey, sh** happens and that just this game. Roll with the punches and come back tomorrow scratchin’ and clawin’.

Bravo, there is essentially nothing wrong with your comments there, but face it: All you do is “troll,” and when someone voices objection, or when you get butt hurt for whatever reason, you cry. You have issues. I’m not trying to offend you, it’s the ugly truth. Find something better to do. I leave, come back 2 hours later, and you’re STILL here, just trying to get that last laugh. You’re pathetic. I can’t believe I defended you a couple times…

  347. Philly Texan

    September 21, 2010 at 12:49 am

Ah, more loser talk from BravoMan.

We could play the what-if game all night. The Phils hit some rockets of Beachy in the first three innings that went right to fielders or were knocked down by the wind.

And Cole Hamels was filthy tonight. The Braves had a great chance to get to him in the 2nd, but they missed it and Cole shut the door after that. If you can’t tip your hat to the opposing pitcher when he’s got great stuff, then I’ve got nothing for ya.

Bottom line is the Phils played a better game. I expect these games to be playoff-like, tight, well played games that will come down to a few plays. So man up and admit your team didn’t make the big plays when it had to and ours did.

I will agree about Heyward, though. Does anyone really think he’s over-rated? I don’t. I’m a die-hard Phils fan and I know that kid’s a stud. If y’all ever want to trade him, we’ll gladly take him off your hands…….

Now let’s tee it up and go at it again tomorrow.
