Last night’s meaningless game, along with San Diego’s season-saving victory over the Giants, turned out not to be entirely meaningless after all. The Braves’ embarrassing 11-5 defeat dropped their playoff probability from 96.1 percent to 85.1, and raised the Padres’ from 7.6 to 20.6 percent. With every game, it seems, this Wild Card race is getting more and more interesting. A repeat of last night’s results (an Atlanta loss and a San Diego win) would drop the Braves into a tie with the Padres, only a game behind San Francisco.

For the Phillies’ part, a victory this afternoon would tie the team’s third-highest all-time win total, set in 1993. If they finish the sweep, not only would the Phillies’ 98 wins be the most since 1977, when they won 101, but they’d win the division by eight games, their widest margin of victory in the division since 1976, when they outpaced the second-place Pirates by nine games.

For the first time in their head-to-head stretch run meetings, the Braves will have a distinct advantage in the starting pitching matchup, sending Tommy Hanson, who finished third in NL Rookie of the Year voting last season, behind Chris Coghlan and J.A. Happ, to face rookie righthander Vance Worley.

Worley, who turned 23 last week, is a former third-round pick out of Long Beach State whose major league career comprises eight innings and only 129 pitches. This afternoon he will make his fifth major league appearance and second major league start. Worley allowed two runs in five innings and took the loss in the first game of a doubleheader against Florida on September 6. Apart from that, he has thrice pitched scoreless relief innings this season. Today’s tilt will be Worley’s first road appearance in a Phillies uniform.

Today’s Lineup: Rollins SS, Polanco 3B, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Ibanez LF, Victorino CF, Brown RF, Schneider C, Worley P

Your gameday beer: Sam Adams Octoberfest
Not only is it now October, but today, as it happens, is the 32nd anniversary of the Bucky Dent home run. So in honor of a time when we felt bad for Red Sox fans, let’s throw back a seasonal Sam Adams offering. A couple interesting notes about that game: Dent only hit 40 regular-season home runs in his 12-year career, including the three-run jack off Mike Torrez in that one-game playoff. Torrez, for his part, is most famous for 1) giving up Dent’s homer, and 2) beaning Dickie Thon in 1984. However, he was the first of only four starting pitchers in the division play era to be traded and win a World Series game in the same season. The last two men to do it? Joe Blanton in 2008 and Cliff Lee in 2009. –by Michael

I read those articles about the big red machine, the only thing it tells me is that we are destined for the same thing.

They fell apart after they traded Tony Perez. Jayson Werth?

But what a game last night, and what a game today could be if Worley pitches well. Don’t we want the Braves to win so we can beat them?

If the Giants get swept, by the Padres at home, how amazing would that be?

Padres and Braves are so inferior to the Fightin’ Phils, instant World Series

Let’s see what Vance Worley brings to the table today. A lot of people in Atlanta do not like Bobby Cox. He has a real attitude with the fans and is considered to be a genuine obnoxious character outside the uniform. Many people from Atlanta cannot wait for him to leave town.

    October 2, 2010 at 3:14 pm

No, I actually do want the Brave to win today, I want to see the Braves, Pads, and Giants all finish with the same record. That would mean the Braves have to win one game in the next two. I choose for the Braves to win today an lose to Hamels tomorrow. Then all the Pads have to do is sweep the Giants.

  13. Manny

    October 2, 2010 at 3:18 pm

Phillies fans are going to be surprised when they see Werth in the top 10 MVP voting… Everyone else won’t.

  14. Manny

    October 2, 2010 at 3:19 pm

ChuckS: Hamels will only throw 70 pitches or less, so that game is also up in the air. I rather the Braves lose today… imagine the added drama tomorrow…with the possibility of getting eliminated!

If the giants mess around enough to get the wild card bring them on.
I do agree they are by far today (at this moment) the second best team in the NL.

  22. Brooks

    October 2, 2010 at 3:44 pm

pheeling, let’s break down the lineup though. First and foremost, the entire infield has spent time on the DL, moreso with the middle of the if than the corners. All power figures are down (aside from Vic) decidedly so. Victorino is having an off year (average), until August, Raul was almost a negative in the lineup. Werth’s year looks good on paper but analyze what has happened and you know that his production (rbi) is way down from where it should be.

All these negatives and look where the Phils are? Sure, the lineup has been mostly intact for September but its the pitching that separates this crew from the rest of the league and its the pitching along with the hitting that will bring us our second WS trophy in 3 years. Too cool.

I want the Braves to win one too, but for a different reason. I don’t care who we play, they will lose.

What I would like to see is the three teams tied so that they have to play Monday to see who wins the west, and then on Tuesday to see who wins the WC.

Let them use up their best pitchers a little bit more than they should have to.

If we win this game… Padres and Braves tied for the Wild Card! With the potential of a three-way tomorrow (if Braves and Padres win)!

That would mean we would might play in the NLDS against a team with games on Oct. 4 and Oct. 5! If it’s the Giants, that means no Lincecum on Game 1, probably no Cain either.

@Andrew: If Braves lose tomorrow and Padres win, the West will be tied and will have to have a 1-game playoff to decide who is the division winner and who is the Wild Card, so that would give the Giants an extra game before the playoffs.

  183. Tracey

    October 2, 2010 at 7:37 pm

If Braves lose and Giants win, Giants take the West, and we play Padres as wild card.

ANDREW-HOW CAN WE MESS UP BY WINNING?

  189. Tracey

    October 2, 2010 at 7:41 pm

@Andrew: Yes, they play to determine who is the division and who is the Wild Card, because it affects who plays what team. The game is definitely played. Whether they play to win is another matter, but the playoff game is definitely played.

  207. Tracey

    October 2, 2010 at 7:51 pm

Yes, it will matter. The Phillies play the Wild Card. Who is the Wild Card if the Padres win and the Braves lose?

  208. JAY-AKA-PHILLYBOY

    October 2, 2010 at 7:52 pm

    On Sunday. . .

If the Phillies lose and the Padres lose, the Phillies will play the Reds.

If the Phillies win and the Padres win, the Phillies will play the Giants.

Now, here is where it gets complicated.

If the Phillies win and the Padres lose, the Padres and Braves will play a one-game playoff at Turner Field on Monday. If the Padres win that game, the Phillies will play the Padres. If the Braves win, the Phillies will play the Reds.

If the Phillies lose and the Padres win, the Phillies will have to wait until Tuesday to find out who they play. First, the Padres and Giants will play a one-game playoff on Monday to determine the NL West winner. The loser of that game will then fly country to play the Braves on Tuesday to determine the Wild Card winner. If the Braves win the playoff, the Phillies play the Reds. If the Padres win the playoff, the Phillies play the Padres.

    Got that?

  213. Manny

    October 2, 2010 at 7:57 pm

Wait, how does the Phils-Braves matter for the Giants-Padres fight for the NL West crown?

I thought that if the Padres win, regardless of the Phils game, they’ll tie the Giants and would have to play them again for the NL West crown on MOnday.

  214. Andrew from waldorf

    October 2, 2010 at 7:57 pm

  215. JAY-AKA-PHILLYBOY

  216. Tracey

    October 2, 2010 at 7:58 pm

@Manny: Yeah, that’s what I thought. I’m looking at the rules, and they have a complex calculation based on how the teams played during the year to decide who is the division winner and who is the Wild Card if there is a tie in a division like that.

  217. Andrew from waldorf

    October 2, 2010 at 7:58 pm

  223. Manny

    October 2, 2010 at 8:01 pm

Oh ok.. I guess that makes sense. If the Padres win, then there’s a tie in the NL west… but they wouldn’t play on Monday if the Braves lose because in that case the only teams left are Padres and Giants.. no need to play an extra game. I think I got it.

So, let’s hope we lose tomorrow? Lol

  224. JAY-AKA-PHILLYBOY

    TERRI-TY SAME THING I POSTED!

  225. Tracey

    October 2, 2010 at 8:03 pm

No, Andrew, that’s not the reason. The rule is that if there is a division tie and one of the teams would be the Wild Card, the tie is broken based who who won more games in head-to-head competition. Padres have beaten Giants head-to-head this year.

  226. Andrew from waldorf

    October 2, 2010 at 8:04 pm

    • If the Padres and Phillies win Sunday: The Padres win the NL West and the Giants are the wild card.

    The phillies cannot win tomorrow
    we play before them too

I think. gonna eat dinner and come back

Timmy has won the last 2 Cy Youngs. him on Wed fully rested is not good

  227. Tracey

    October 2, 2010 at 8:10 pm

Ah, here’s a site that lays out the rule clearly:
“If the Padres win Sunday and the Braves lose, the Padres and Giants would tie for the National League West title, but the Padres would get the N.L. West seed in the playoffs by virtue of their 13-5 head-to-head edge on the Giants this season. ”

I’d like to see the Phillies finish the sweep and the giants get the win. Braves/Pads playoff giving us either the Pads or the Reds.

Outside of the Phillies, these teams are pretty mediocre.

  236. JAY-AKA-PHILLYBOY

    October 2, 2010 at 8:31 pm

Phillies will at least be tied for best regular season record in MLB. One win or Yankee loss and they’ll be tops by themselves.

  237. Al

    October 2, 2010 at 8:35 pm

We can still play the Giants if we lose. If the Braves and Padres win, and the Padres win the playoff with the Giants, then the Giants travel to Atlanta to play for the wild card. If the Giants win that, then we still play them in the first round. If that were the scenario, the Giants will likely use Sanchez and Bumgarner against the Padres, and then it would be Lincecum’s turn in the rotation to face the Braves. Granted, this would probably be the best-case scenario, since we would only see Lincecum once in the NLDS unless he pitches on short rest.

  238. JAY-AKA-PHILLYBOY

    October 2, 2010 at 8:36 pm

Not going to dwell on this but simply put under no circumatance can the phillies win tomorrow.
Better start the scrubs tomorrow old man.

    1. The Phillies play the Reds if the Braves and Giants win Sunday.

    2. The Phillies play the Giants if the Braves and Giants lose Sunday.

    3. It’s TBA if the Braves and Padres win Sunday.

    4. It’s TBA if the Braves and Padres lose Sunday.

    October 2, 2010 at 8:59 pm

Who really cares who we play??

All these teams…Atlanta, San Diego, San Francisco, Cincinnati….ALL of them are capable of being in the playoffs….and being a formidable opponent for the Phils.

They are major league baseball teams that have competed all season long. There’s a reson they’ve gotten to this point in the year…they are all good teams.

The Phillies can beat any of them.

    October 2, 2010 at 9:00 pm

It’s ludicrous how much fear there is of Lincecum here.

We have THREE guys as good as Lincecum. Have no fear.

  245. Chuck

    October 2, 2010 at 9:03 pm

    Sorry Andrew….WRONG

You ALWAYS pull for the Phillies to win. I don’t give a f*ck who we play in the first, second or 83rd round.

Any Phillies fan that roots AGAINST the Phillies…..in ANY game….should have his/her fan card revoked.

Let the chips fall where they fall-BUT ANDREW WE CAN STILL WIN AND NOT FACE THE GIANTS IS WHAT I AM TRYING TO SAY……..

  249. Chuck

    October 2, 2010 at 9:16 pm

And are you people THAT scared of the Giants??

WE either face them in round 1…or probably round 2.

There’s an EXCELLENT chance that the Phillies will have to play the Giants at some point.

So just deal with it and embrace it. Enjoy playoff baseball.

But to root AGAINST your team…just to possibly set up match-ups that maybe YOU as a fan prefer…that’s just asanine.

    October 2, 2010 at 9:21 pm

I love the macho guys. I got bigger balls than you type.

You go over and fight mike tyson. If given a choice Ill fight richard simmons.

Make no doubt abut it the biggest threat to the phillies is the giants in a 5 game series with Timmy on full rest. not the yankees not the Rays not injuries not anything but that. In a 7 gamer he doesnt matter as much. Its simple math. But hey call me a pussy.
I am not rooting for the phillies to lose. If they lose it isnt a bad thing though.
Yup I fear Koufax and Halladay and Lincecum. They are 3 of the best ever.

  251. Andrew from waldorf

    October 2, 2010 at 9:22 pm

    Round 2 is 7 games

in a 5 gamer he pitches 40% of the games on full rest

he starts 2 in a NLCs

    simple math

  252. Andrew from waldorf

    October 2, 2010 at 9:23 pm

Not rooting against but not gonna go ga ga for a win

the giants with Timmy on full rest in a 5 gamer is the biggest threat to this team possible.
More than any other team or scenario

    sorry to be realistic

  253. Andrew from waldorf

    October 2, 2010 at 9:28 pm

Lincecum has 2 years in the majors and 2 cy young awards
    thats 100%

Dont get me wrong the Phillies beat the Giants round 1 or round 2.
I am assessing the threat and IMO that is the biggest thrreat to this team winning a WS.

and the threat is 2 times as big in a shorter series. MLB should move round 1 to 7 games.

  254. Chuck

    October 2, 2010 at 9:28 pm

    Tim Lincecum isn’t exactly invincible.

Lifetime against the Phils…he’s been very good….2-1 in 7 starts with a 3.17 ERA.

At CBP for his career he’s 0-1 in 3 starts with a 3.66 ERA.

Good stats…but nothing that the Phillies can’t deal with.

If they have to face him twice….they can easily win one of those games.

    Bring him on.

  255. Chuck

    October 2, 2010 at 9:32 pm

And if the Phils are gonna lose to the Giants…and not advance….I’d rather it be because of one of the top 5 pitchers in the game…and not some stiff.

  256. Chuck

    October 2, 2010 at 9:35 pm

And I’m sure that the Giants fans are saying the SAME thing about Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels.

I wouldn’t want to be any of those teams right now having to face the red-hot Phillies with their 3-headed monster.

    October 2, 2010 at 9:40 pm

    Chuck I am just saying
Not to mention that us losing and Sd winning causes the chaos of a 3 team tie.

I do not want the phillies to lose tomorrow. I simply dont really want them to win that badly.

It is in the giants interst to win tomorrow regardless.
It will play out. Its jsut a funny situation.
trust me i have no fear of the Reds or Padres or Twins or Yankees or rangers. Certainly not the Braveless. Who should man up and win tomorrow.

  260. Andrew from waldorf

    October 2, 2010 at 9:53 pm

    Its all good agreed
Just funny how it played out. If the giants burn timmy tomorrow you want to play them more than any other team. Because minus him in a game 1 or 2 they are the worst team in the playoffs.
Will be intersting and tomorrow is my last chance to see Wheeler and his har. Ill miss him. Really wish he was doing the playoffs. I cant stand mccarver.

  261. Chuck

    October 2, 2010 at 9:54 pm

I want the Phils to win tomorrow. As a fan….that’s always the goal.

But I’m not gonna be broken-hearted if they don’t win.

I DO think, however, that a win to end the regular season will help them momentum-wise heading into Wednesday…whoever they face.

This possible 3-way tie is pretty cool, though. It’s a baseball fan’s dream.

    Think about this, too….

If the Braves get in…they’re damaged goods anyway. The way they back-doored it after blowing the division.

If the Padres get in…they actually could be dangerous in the first round…because they will have pulled something out of a hat this weekend that NOBODY thought was possible. But they will be beat up in the process.

If the Giants get in….but lose tomorow….they are damaged goods too….and beat up from an extra playoff game (or two).

The Reds are secure in their spot and could be the most dangerous team right now (outside of the Phillies).

    Baseball’s a funny, funny game….ANYTHING can happen.

  262. biz

    October 2, 2010 at 9:59 pm

Lincecum isn’t even the best pitcher on his own team this year. We have a better lineup and a better staff than the Giants.

I’d rather have them in a 7 game series, but i tdoesnt really matter.

  263. JAY-AKA-PHILLYBOY

    October 2, 2010 at 10:01 pm

Phils playoff opponent still up in the air. We’ll know 2moro if we lose and Pads lose (Reds) or we win and Pads win

  264. JAY-AKA-PHILLYBOY

  265. JAY-AKA-PHILLYBOY

    October 2, 2010 at 10:03 pm

If Phils win and Padres lose or Phils lose and Padres win, we’ll have to wait for the potential of one or two tie-breaking games w/ teams.

    October 2, 2010 at 10:04 pm

    It is funny.
i am not even saying there should be any lack of effort etc etc.

Just saying that hypothetcily a phillies loss tomorrow may benefit the team.
when I thnk about how pathetic the Braves are. The last 2 games are an absolute disgrace.
Honesly worse than the Mets collapses
This is the end of bobbys career. They actually have some fans in attendence. Phils start KK and Worley
They dont deserve to be in any playoffs.
If it wasnt for my man crush on wheeler id nto watch tomorrow even

  267. Andrew from waldorf

    October 2, 2010 at 10:05 pm

  269. Chuck

    October 2, 2010 at 10:19 pm

Give Vance Worley credit. He pitched VERY well.

He’ll be in the mix next Spring.

And Kendrick did a nice job too. double digit wins in 3 of his 4 ML seasons.

It’s not like the Braves lost to college pitchers.

If anything, those two losses can almost be put on the shoulders of Brooks Conrad at 3B….two absolute BONEHEAD plays that turned close games into easy Phillies wins.

    October 2, 2010 at 10:27 pm

    I couldnt watch today.

Still the braves lost to the phillies 5th and 6th starters

In a way be very funny if the phils knocked the braves out

but regardless the phils have done thier part beating them 2 times.

tomorrow is sanchez vs latos for the west. Latos not so good lately

  271. bacardipr05

    October 2, 2010 at 10:36 pm

Worley did a nice job today. He threw to many pitches up in the zone but was able to mix it up enough to keep them off balance. Im liking what i see. The Phils need to audition more of there young talent. Specially next year when we lose Durbin, JC, Contreras and yes Moyer. The Phils might get 2 on the market but they still will have to bring up at least one of these guys up from minors i believe.

  272. Mazinman

    October 2, 2010 at 10:48 pm

Braves are looking terrible right about now but, then again, none of the National League contenders are looking really good except for the Phillies. The Reds are getting in on the strength of the Cardinals collapsing. The Padres gave the Division to the Giants and the Giants now want to give it back to them. All the Braves had to do was beat Kendrick, Worley, and the mish-mash of pitchers we will throw tomorrow two out of three times, AT HOME, as they would be the Wild Card but they have failed spectacularly at it so far.

The only National League team who is playing like they belong in the big show is the Philadelphia Phillies. At this point I don’t care how things work out tomorrow. We can beat anyone of them.

The Phils will beat any team they face. They are hot, they have been here before, they know what to expect and how to prepare. They also have two outstanding pitchers (Halladay and Oswalt) who want to win more than anything. This team will beat every team it plays in the playoffs and the World Series. It will be fun and it will be eye-opening. Don’t sweat a thing. We are the best Phillies team in history. And we are the best team in baseball right now….by far. Look at our record during August and September. That record is for real. So are the Phils. Plus Rollins is going to be healthy and he is anxious to play under the limelight. Time to place your bets !!!!! If you are listening to sports talk radio in Cincinnatti, San Francisco, or San Diego you will realize that the fans out there are scared to death of the Phillies Machine.
