Week In Review – Hamels, Turning It Around

Cole Hamels has been a bring spot for the Phillies this season.

Cole Hamels finished off the week with his fifth win in a row and leads the Phillies staff with those five wins.  Hamels is the third guy in a rotation behindRoy Halladay and Cliff Lee, but its the lefty thats been confusing hitters all season.

Hamels recent domination has people talking; and calling.  Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reported this past week that Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopolous has been asking about Hamels and Shane Victorino.

Both Hamels and Victorino are free agents after the season, and if the Phillies keep this up they could be sellers.

At this point in the season, Charlie Manuel has got to be racking his brain trying to figure out what is going on with this team.  He has one of his infamous closed door meetings with the team trying to light a fire under the guys.  Another way to do that is to shake things up a bit.  Most of these moves were because of injuries but the Phillies pulled up some new faces this week.

So right now the Phillies are 16-19 and in last place in the NL East.  I thought it would be a dark, dark day when the Phillies found themselves in the basement six games behind the Braves.  However, for me, I will never fully count them out until they are officially eliminated from the playoffs.

It’s a good thing my pal Jon feels the same way.  Listen up, he tells you why the Phillies can still turn it around this season.

When a team is floundering this bad there has to be some blame.  The Phillies could point the finger at the offense or the bench for not coming through in big situations.  In the Phillies’ case, you wouldn’t be wrong to hold the bullpen under the bus.  They have been the absolute worse this season.  The one bright spot is closer Jonathan Papelbon.  He is 10 for 10 in save situations but before today hadn’t the opportunity to save a game since May 1.
