2012 Gameday

Gameday: Phillies (36-46) at Mets (44-37)

Philadelphia Phillies (36-46) vs. New York Mets (44-37)

Cliff Lee (0-5, 4.13) vs. Chris Young (2-1, 3.30)

Time: 1:10, Citi Field
Weather: Scattered Thunderstorms, 91
Media: Twitter and Facebook

Happy Independence Day! There’s nothing like celebrating the Fourth of July by watching America’s past time.

Once again, Cliff Lee is looking for his first victory. There have been times when the bullpen blew the lead or the offense couldn’t score enough runs, but recently Lee hasn’t pitched well to deserve a win. In each of his last three starts, he has surrendered five runs or more. His earned run average is 5.68 in his last eight starts. Looking at his stats throughout his career, July has always been his worst month, posting a 4.41 ERA. Hopefully Lee can break the trend and turn things around.

Chris Young missed most of the 2011 campaign with an arm injury. Young has made five starts since he was called up on June 5, and he has looked good so far. He had a career year in 2007, posting a 3.12 ERA with the San Diego Padres, but has been plagued with injuries since. The Mets are giving him a chance to prove that he still has something left in the tank.

Your Gameday Beer: Happy Independence Day, Americans! Today’s beer is Amber Waves Amber Lager. This brew is from the Red Star Brewery and Grill just outside of Pittsburgh. It’s a tasty Amber that makes for easy drinking. It’s not a particularly delicious beer, nor one that is widely available, but it does fit the occasion in honoring our great land. Drink it outside with whatever you’re grilling. -By Brian

There’s nothing like celebrating the Fourth of July by watching America’s past time.>>

That’s spelled Freudian slip, classic example. What better way of referring to the current 2012, as opposed to Opening Day 2012 version of the Phillies (first place, 1-0) than by saying “past time”, as opposed to the more accurate description of baseball as a pasttime.

No baseball bunch has ever proven to be past time better than the Phils of late, so the shoe do fit. And we fans have to painfully wear it.

All that said, one more time….”Let’s Go, Cliff!”

Cliff gets his first win today, book it. And this is the first time I said this.

What the hell time did the Nationals/Giants game start? Tied 3-3 in the top of the fourth already? Weird- I bet at game time a lot of people in SF were still asleep.

started 11AM, EDT, and the media was allowed in the locker room at 7:30. French toast with pablo Sandoval. Enticing.

I hope its the last time you have to say first win for Cliff today. I’ve probably said it more often than he’s started this year. Little better draw than a few of his games at least (famous last words). Wish it was Chris Volstad, but Chris Young’ll due. I guess.

The Phillies do indeed seem to be past their time. And yet, I keep watching.

    GO PHILS!!!

I’m starting to hear people say that Cliff Lee was always overrated. I’m not convinced that is true, but I have no idea what’s wrong with him this year. I just hope he figures it out and pulls it together.

    1-2-3 inning with two Ks… that’s a promising start…

Tracey, scroll down to the very bottom right of this screen on PN. There is a very good link there about your question. It’s called “is something actually wrong with Cliff Lee”

  7. Tracey

    July 4, 2012 at 1:37 pm

oof. There goes the no-hitter. And once again, nobody do blame but himself. Let’s see if he can get out of this…

  8. Tracey

    July 4, 2012 at 1:41 pm

Thanks for the link, Lefty. Hmn… he’s blaming it on the defense, which has admittedly been atrocious, but other pitchers have managed to get wins despite that atrocious defense. Sorry, not going to let Cliffy off the hook that easily.

  9. Tracey

    July 4, 2012 at 1:59 pm

ooo… Phillies get a hit! Let’s see if they can do anything with that…

  10. Tracey

    July 4, 2012 at 2:02 pm

    Nope. No, we can’t.

  11. Tracey

    July 4, 2012 at 2:06 pm

(sigh) See, you can’t blame that on the defense or the bull pen.

      July 4, 2012 at 2:20 pm

I guess that was in reference to the Hairston homer. An 0-2 pitch right over the plate. What is an accomplished major league pitcher doing making a mistake like that? Its just unbelievable!

      • Tracey

        July 4, 2012 at 2:24 pm

Yup, that’s what I was referring to. Granted, the Keystone Kops fielding isn’t helping either.

Phils, with 5 hits in the last 13 innings, including the Pence leadoff single, and 2 walks last night (0 today) fail to advance Pence as Vic pops out.

    What a pathetic stretch.

  13. Tracey

    July 4, 2012 at 2:17 pm

Lead off runner gets a hit and… an pop-up followed by a double play. (sigh) You’d think the home of the Declaration of Independence could get a break on Independence Day.

    July 4, 2012 at 2:25 pm

Sheesh, they look like crap out there. They look like… well, they look like they did after they clinched the division last year, and they haven’t looked much better since then.

    Look its Chase Utley

    Jimmy Pop up?

Can someone here tell me how they would be more than 13 games back without him?

Well without Jimmy they would be 31 games back I guess.

Wait Howard is coming back and then you signed Paplebomb.

I think 75-6 in the second half can be done.

    Rollins Utley Howard

    Forget this post
Beta told me about the best team

    The best team….
    If no Rollins….

Back to back HRs again by Utley and Chooch, this one could get used to pretty quickly = )

And then the all too familiar 1-2-3 with Pence, Vic and Poly going down very quickly

OK, its over 90 degrees & muggy.
Cliff has already thrown over 100 pitches, its in the 7th inning. Assuming he gets out of this inning (there are 2 outs as I write this), does he come back for another inning?
Given the status of our very stinky BP and the fact that the Phils have only a 1 run lead – what do you think?

Not that anyone around here’s gonna get overconfident until the last out is official, but Papelbon hasn’t pitched ina a week, maybe even plus.

So assuming the game even gets to him, rust might be a consideration, and next in line in a season of always something to worry about.

Cliff won’t pitch again for a week plus, unless thay use him briefly over the weekend before the break, so in that regard, you can exhaust him to a little higher level than if he was coming back on normal rest.

But that papelbon on a week’s rest is a little disconcerting.

    … but is a 7-run lead enough? …

  36. Tracey

    July 4, 2012 at 3:42 pm

    I don’t think we’ve actually blown a 7-run lead this season. I’m pretty sure we’ve blown a 6-run lead.

I don’t know if anyone else noticed but Cliff Lee looked determined today to win. He pitched with alot more confidence, as if to say to the world, this is my game and this is a new start!
I hope that is true…..maybe Utley was just what this team needed.

  42. Andrew From Waldorf

    July 4, 2012 at 5:09 pm

Well if they win 30 in a row
They will still be in last.
But lee will only be owed $ and Howard only $125,000,000.00

People need to calm down. It’s only one win and we’re still 12 games out. Don’t get me wrong…it’s a nice win. But we’ve had some other “nice wins” this season at times and it really hasn’t meant a whole lot. Let’s get back to .500 and below 10 GB and then it’s a legitimate discussion.

And SavannahPhilliesFan….. Cliff better look determined to win. It only took him 3 months and $12,000,000 to get to that point. Any player that makes that much coin sure as sh!t needs to have that determination every minute he’s on the field.

    • schmenkman

      July 4, 2012 at 5:46 pm

Agreed – only one win. Also, “needs to have that determination every minute he’s on the field.” — agreed, and I think he does. Would we be saying he looked “determined to win” if they had lost 2-1? A win makes everything look better and makes us forget mistakes, and a loss does the opposite.

    • SavannahPhilliesPhan

      July 4, 2012 at 8:26 pm

I think we all know that all the losses were not solely his fault. At least not early on. He lost alot of games over his last 3 starts but before that he got no help from the sh*ty bullpen or the terrible offence! I don’t care if it’s just one win….it made my day!!! Thanks Phillies!!!

(flicker) an eye lid blinks. (flicker) a finger moves… Maybe, just maybe the Phillies are coming out of their coma. Let’s get an I.V. of a win streak in them first though… Cliff’em All!! Go Phillies!
