Gameday: Phillies (37-46) at Mets (44-38)

Philadelphia Phillies (37-46) vs. New York Mets (44-38)

Cole Hamels (10-4, 3.08) vs. R.A. Dickey  (12-1, 2.15)

Time: 7:10, Citi Field

Cole Hamels has been the center of several rumors lately.  You have to wonder if these next few starts are his last in a Phillies uniform.  All Cole can do is go out there and try to get a win for the Phils.  The All Star has given up three runs or fewer in 13 of his 16 starts this year.

R.A Dickey has been one of the league’s best pitchers during the first half of the season.  He’s tops in the leagues in wins, ERA, WHIP, strikeouts, and pretty much every other statistical category out there.  He’s coming off a torrid month of June where he went 5-0 with a 0.93 ERA.  In addition, he has dominated the Phillies throughout his career.  He is 3-3 with a 2.40 ERA in 45 innings against the Phillies.

Lineup:

Allagash White
Your Gameday Beer – Allagash White
This is a really good beer that is fortunately becoming more widely available around the country. The White name lets you know it’s a Witbier – way better than the more ubiquitous Blue Moon or Hoegaarden. It has citrus wheat flavors along with some strong fall scents like pumpkin, cinnamon, and nutmeg which make it a great late summer ale. It is refreshing and smooth and very enjoyable to drink. It pairs well with a sweet chicken dish like Hawaiian or teriyaki style. – By Brian

DCmikey – Benny Fresh is with Toronto. He has hit only .227 for Toronto and is racking up frequent flyer miles going back and forth between Toronto and Vegas.

Why not send Hamels with Pierre & Pense coming up. Which one of these two is going to hit a sac fly? Neither of course. Send hamel he would have made it. Think ahead Samuel.

You should be managing the team. It’s amazing the guy has 12 home runs, and 5 are against the Phils. And no one has thought of that yet?

      • Tracey

        July 5, 2012 at 8:06 pm

Five batter, less Chooch, with a runner in scoring position and we were able to get ZERO fu—-g runs, plus Polanco loafed on the KO. Christ.

Looks like Wright has faced Bastardo 3 times, a walk, and an oh fer.

I’m dreading the dreaded leadoff walk to him. I HATE leadoff walks.

I hope tonight ends the talk of trading Hammels. I contend it makes no sense to trade away a guy who is 28 years old. Victorino? Pierre? Wigginton? I get it. Cole ? Does not make sense unless they cant afford to re sign him which I dont believe is the case.

    • Ken Bland

      July 5, 2012 at 9:50 pm

Trading Hamels is one thing. Seeing what you can get for him is sensible. If another GM is non-sensible, then maybe trading him is maybe okay. Gotta keep an open mind. I doubt you get enough to justify dealing him as you accurately described him, but what do I know?

  21. Ken Bland

    July 5, 2012 at 9:42 pm

That might be an example of Charlie’s loud and vocal critics that say he won because talent made up for his mistakes. Bastardo threw a talented inning, so to speak, but maybe the right call was Schwimer, brining Papelbon in early if Schwim struggled.

But, all’s well that ends well, as Bastardo did his job.

After freaking starting out 3-0 against Wright! GRRRRRRR!

All I know is a couple times recently, Papelbon has said, “I need to do a better job.”

Early inning drama aside, here’s his chance to do it.

    Right here, right now.

Pence can’t field to save his life, and Papelbon is overrated.

    • Ken

      July 5, 2012 at 10:14 pm

Pablebon was fortunate to kick-save that ball Murphy hit up the middle because that ball was destined for CF and the game would have been over there. Why he kept pitching Valdespin inside is beyond me. I wonder if the Home run he hit in Philly was in the back of his mind ? Ugly end to an otherwise entertaining game.

The good news is: this stuff drives down the Phillies ticket prices on Stub Hub.

The bad news is: would you even want to pay the lower prices to watch this garbage?

When he dives, he misses the ball and looks even more stupid.

    • Ken

      July 5, 2012 at 10:16 pm

Tracey he stumbled toward it like he had jelly legs. A good jump and that ball is catchable in my opinion. He was too deep. A single wins the game in that situation.

when your hot your hot when your not your not.

Fun watching teams like the Mets and NAts that have what the Phils had 4 or 5 years ago.

Those days are so long gone its sad.

Someone email me when Ruben or Charlie are no longer GM and manager.
Because until that happens anything is treading water.

    Take care PN
I dont feel like piling on this mess much anymore.

      July 5, 2012 at 10:21 pm

Blame Juan Samuel for this loss. That decision to send Fontenut was awful. Ruined a potential game killing rally. Im ticked !!

      • schmenkman

        July 5, 2012 at 10:46 pm

Operative word is “potential”. It’s much more likely that that wouild have been the end of the rally. With Hairston in left it was a good gamble.

Baseball history. Pence is a fck

  50. Ken

    July 5, 2012 at 10:19 pm

The pivotal play of the game was Samuel sending Fontenut ruining a rally. Terrible call. He sent him when he was at third and the LF had the ball in his glove.

Sweet. Love to see the phillies go down. The fans are awful and insult players on opposing team every time they lose. Their window is closed and opening for nats and mets. Not this year for mete but real soon. It will be so sweet to see phillies in last for years. Ha

  51. Andrew From Waldorf

    July 5, 2012 at 10:39 pm

Pences undisciplined style does not fit now.

Last year when I was in desperation mode to try to win a WS. I was all for getting him.
Well we didnt win and if he goes it isnt a bad thing.

    This mix does not work.

And I dont care if Howard hits 60 homers in the second half this year and 75 next year.

This mix no longer is even close to working.
And the manager cant pitch the starters arms out to win 102 games anymore.
    He already did that.

Losing Beltran and Reyes makes the Mets so much better. And Beltran can hit 50 homers this year and they are better without him.

Dont know how else to explain it to you guys who think the big bonus primma donnas are great. The Phillies are now a roster of Beltrans and Reyes.
    Thank you Ruben Minaya.
