Pettibone Promoted to IronPigs

Pettibone will head to Triple-A after dominating the Eastern League. Is this a sign of further Phils moves? Photo by: Jay Floyd

Jonathan Pettibone, a former 3rd round pick out of Esperanza HS in Anaheim, CA, will reportedly join the IronPigs after a 7 IP, 3 hit, 6 K performance. The news was first reported by Reading Phillies beat writer Anthony Burkhart who covers the team for the Republican-Herald. Pettibone has been fantastic for Reading, entering the night with a 3.43 ERA and 1.260 WHIP after just turning 22 on July 19. Pettibone is part of the faction of young arms known collectively to Phillies fans as the “Baby Aces” and is the first of the group to reach Triple-A. He was ranked 9th by our Jay Floyd in the 2012 Prospect Nation and as the 5th best Phils prospect by FanGraphs.

With Pettibone’s promotion, it is assumed that a corresponding roster move will be made to accommodate him in the starting rotation at Lehigh Valley. While I don’t want to speculate, this may be a sign of a move with the Big Club to make room for Tyler Cloyd, who is 9-1 at Triple-A Lehigh Valley with a 2.11 ERA and a 1.007 WHIP. Calling up Pettibone, combined with re-signing Hamels, may be the initial move in a series of moves that leads Cloyd to the ‘Bigs and possibly Joe Blanton or Cliff Lee to a new team to free up newly needed cash for the Phils. Of course, it may just be a case of Pettibone having an outstanding year and simply being ready for the next level.

Our minor-league expert Jay Floyd has covered Pettibone extensively throughout his time in the Phillies organization. To read more about Pettibone check out Jay’s ProspectNation piece on Pettibone here and his interview he did with the righty here.

Interesting stuff. If there’s a pitcher getting traded, I hope it’s Blanton –and that we get a reliever. Replacing Blanton with Cloyd should be a wash, or close to it.

Well if they are really moving forward (2013), might as well get this Cloyd due MLB experience. Even if by some crap shot we make it to the post season Blanton probably wont be much of a factor. Phils fan have to understand with the Hamels extension the 5th starter will have to be a minor league fill in or some has been project type of guy.

Who knows what Cloyd will bring?
It could be a terrific story line or just another so-so pitcher to take Joe’s place, either would be OK at this point. Movement is key here

brooks i saw cloyd pitch at reading last year. i came awaw very impressed! i’m not a pro scout or anything but have been watching baseball for over 50+ years and from what i could see, cloyd doesn’t have an overpowering FB but what he has is 3-4 pitches that he commands very well and is a location type pitcher who throws strikes and throws them often, and i mean all his pitches. he was ahead in the count on practically every batter and he went 7 inn. they lost the game i think 3-2 but when he was pinch hit for he was down 1-0. as usual brooks they had the tying run on second in the ninth but couldn’t get him in. i thought to myself watching him pitch.. where the hell did this guy come from? they all talk about the “baby aces” and i never heard this guys name mentioned. i mean i follow their minors but this one crept up on me i was always looking at the guys they talked about often. and apparently what i saw wasn’t a fluke cause he’s been doing it and now he’s at AAA and being considered a call up! and this kid pettibone looks like a keeper too! they just moved him up to AAA. could he be a replacement for cloyd if cloyd gets a call? we’ll see brooksie

None of the Phils pitching prospects seem close to MLB ready and certainly not better than what we have. I am not opposed to dealing Blanton for some prospects seem close but I don’t expect to get much. Best card we have is Pence since he would not be a rental

One of the commentators on mlb was say that the Phillies have no chance of reaching the WC, unless Roy, Cliff and Worley get their s*it together! What he said was that together they have given up 32 HRs to date and have only 10 wins between them!!! It seems anymore that every time they get up to pitch we have to bail them out. Well the next two series will tell all. If they cant beat the braves and the nats ….they wont have a chance.
