Ruiz Out 4-6 Weeks With Foot Tear

Ruiz will miss 4-6 weeks. (AP)

Chalk this up as yet another major blow for the Phillies in this season from hell.

Carlos Ruiz will miss 4-6 weeks with a plantar fascitis and a partial tear in his his left foot. Hector Luna has been recalled from Lehigh Valley. Chooch will be reevaluated in two weeks.

The injuries just keep adding up for this team that has gone through a almost a complete reconstruction from last years 2011 team. They’ve aged rapidly, and this is another sign of that.

And you have to feel for Ruiz, by far the Phillies best player this season. He’s 4th in the National League in hitting with a .334 average, 6th in the NL with a .959 OPS, and accounts for an OWAR of 3.5, better than names like Carlos Gonzalez and Carlos Beltran.

He was likely a top-5 MVP candidate for his work in the box and behind it. Now, it’s unknown how much more he can give the Phillies in 2012. At this point in the season, there aren’t many reasons to want to watch this fledgling team. Chooch was one of them, but will be out an extended period.

jeff, you’re like a living PSA on why it’s important not to drop out of middle school. Go back to the trailer park.

well fellas that’s the exclamation point on this season! i feel bad for chooch. i was listening to macnow and didinger on the radio and they had a doctor on explaining exactly what the injury was and how it can effect carlos moving forward. well it’s not good! he said 4-6 weeks is about right but in his eyes there’s no reason to let him play at all being where they are., and that it would probably be better to let it heal up and rehab the foot and then give it a try in the spring. the doc was then asked by macnow if it would be a recurring thing. and the doctor responded with most likely yes! it could flare up at the slightest minor thing! i’m like oh shit! this could be the end of carlos as an everyday catcher! i sure hope not. he’s 33 and nearing the end of his contract next year. god who whammied this team with bad luck?

The season IS over. Why not give Kratz a chance?!

Please please treat Scheider as a backup.

Kratz was playing great and needs to be the backup cacther next year. It’s awful having a LH bat as backup catcher with such a lefty lineup. Just poor roster design.

Phils claimed a couple of players the other day. Is there a waiver wire we can view?

That’s top secret stuff Joe, no one is supposed to know. The Cliff Lee leak was unusual.

From the little we’ve seen of Kratz I have to say that I like him. DEFINITELY needs to be the backup next year. I would think he becomes the main catcher now with Schneider the backup? Also, wonder if we’ll see either Valle or Joseph during the Sept. call ups??

Charlie Manuel needs to answer some hard questions about this. He horribly overuses his players until they, surprise!, get hurt. The fact that he kept starting Ruiz this year is unforgiveable–at one point didn’t he start something like 17 out of 18 games? You don’t use a major league catcher that way! First he helped drive Chase Utley’s knee into the ground, now it is Ruiz’s foot.

well i’ve been saying for some time that we need a magerial change. the only thing he can manage? he manages to wear our stars down till they don’t shine anymore!

Mr. Gallen, I love baseball and will continue to watch my team, the Phillies, the playoffs and the World Series. As a dedicated baseball fan, I need to say that to you Mr. Gallen. 🙂

The Phillies indeed are snake-bitten. The loss of Ruiz will not affect the outcome of the team’s dreadful season. What does matters is Ruiz’s health. I’m hoping for a complete recovery with him and that he will be ready for next season’s opener. The management knows it would be pointless to have him back for the few games left in the season and perhaps do more harm than good with Ruiz’s health. We can only hope that it’s not a cronic condition that will limit Ruiz’s playing time next season.

Kratz goes yard. If he’s not on the team next year I’ll be pissed.
