Phils Reassign Five to Minors Camp

Starting pitcher Tyler Cloyd, righty reliever B.J. Rosenberg, lefty reliever Mauricio Robles, OF Tyson Gillies and catcher Sebastian Valle were reassigned to minor league camp according to Dennis Deitch. None were big surprises to be optioned back to camp and all five players are on the 40-man roster. Of the group, Cloyd and Rosenberg are the favorites to see some time with the Phillies in 2013 and the others could see time if needs arise or injuries occur.

In other Phillies news, our Jay Floyd was the first to break the news of the release of RHP Ryan Duke, a 2011 25th round pick, and righty Juan Morillo, who saw time with the IronPigs and R-Phils last year. Also, Cameron Rupp, who was a late non-roster invitee to camp to provide catching depth, was reassigned to Minor League camp on Sunday.

My feeling is that the Phillies are grooming Sebastian Valle to be their catcher fior next year since it’s likely Carlos Ruiz will not be with the Phillies once he is signed as a free agent with another club during the offseason.

Of course, Tommy Joseph may have something to say about it if he has a great season with AA Reading farm club.
