2014 Gameday

Gameday 3: Phillies vs. Rangers

Philadelphia Phillies (1-1) at Texas Rangers (1-1)

Starting Pitchers:
PHI: RHP Kyle Kendrick
TEX: LHP Robbie Ross

Time: 8:05, The Ballpark in Arlington
TV: The Comcast Network, home of Phillies Nation TV. Broadcast nationally on ESPN 2.
Weather: Cloudy, 80, 18 MPH wind
Media: Twitter and Facebook

A Note for Tonight:

Kyle Kendrick will toe the rubber as the Phillies face a second lefty reliever-turned-Opening-Series starter in Robbie Ross. Ross, 24, has 123 relief appearances over 2012 and 2013 for the Rangers but does not have a start to his name in the Majors versus 68 minor league starts. Ross throws mostly a 92 MPH fastball and a 85 MPH slider and has a pretty interesting reverse platoon split for his MLB career: .276/.347/.425 against lefties but .223/.292/.282 against righties.

Kendrick has faced current Rangers in just 39 plate appearances but Shin-Soo Choo, Donnie Murphy, and Prince Fielder have all taken Kendrick yard for a team that has hit a combined .344/.405/.781 against him. Kendrick will have to keep lefties Choo and Fielder in the ballpark if the Phillies are to have any shot at winning the opening series.

I thought I would Ryno as a manager. But he way over managing. How is JRoll not starting. And really Chooch in the 2 hole is just not right. 3 line up in 3 days is just moving people around to move them around. DHing Howard and JMJ at first that makes sense in an American League park. At 3 DHs makes sense. But to sit your starting SS LF and 3rd baseman in the first week is just trying to prove a point to the detriment of the team. Both physically and mentally especially the younger guys. And I really don’t care if they sin tonight 22-1. I will still disagree with constantly rearranging the line up. Really Jimmy has 5 RBIs in 2 games. It is one thing to platoon position but baseball is a game of routine. Really feel Ryno is trying to prove how smart his is and if they start losing it is not going end up well this year

J roll isn’t starting because he’s back in Philly with his wife for their baby….

And this Sandburg over managing crap is getting way overblown it’s been 2 games this year so let’s cut him some slack before running him out of time, and yes I realize he managed last year, he’s doing a fine job and he’s learning still

Why the hell is Nix in the lineup again?

      April 2, 2014 at 7:15 pm

Rollins’ wife went into labor so he flew back to Philly.

      • Morris Buttermaker

        April 2, 2014 at 7:23 pm

He’s the new Eric Bruntlett/ Wilson Valdez/ Michael Martinez. Once you see his name in the lineup, you know the Phillies have lost.

Mr Buttermaker: You see those names in the lineup, and it’s bad news for the Phils? 🙂

We all need to take a chill, Reno is mixing it up early in the season to find the best combo and give everyone equal rest and at bata, as far the bullpen, gotta see what these unproven guys can do, still question the Hollands and died man use last night but hopefully he learns and so do the pitchera

  7. Tracey

    April 2, 2014 at 8:25 pm

  13. Tracey

After a rough first inning, Kyle has really settled down nicely. 45 pitches in 3 innings.

  14. Andrew from Waldorf

    April 2, 2014 at 9:50 pm

    bull pen time soon.

    I cant wait

I hate the American league game with the DH.

Although it probably suits the phils more than most NL teams.

  15. Brooks

    April 2, 2014 at 10:11 pm

Sixth inning has traditionally been Kyle’s benchmark. This is a great outing for KK. Drink the koolaid Andrew, while it’s still sweet

Papelbom puts the turkey in “Jive turkey”

  25. Andrew from Waldorf

    April 2, 2014 at 11:10 pm

    On a positive note.

I am facing Paplebomb in fantasy.

    On a truly sad note.

Ruben Amaro still has a job.

He will let this bum close forever.

It is WELL KNOWN his velocity is down and he sucks.

But we will never get relief

  26. Morris Buttermaker

    April 2, 2014 at 11:13 pm

Hey Pap, we didn’t sign up for this either.

wow… I would make Bastardo the closer the next game. KK deserved a much better fate.

  30. Andrew from Waldorf

    April 2, 2014 at 11:15 pm

how many losses until Ruben is fired?

Because I will root for them.

    Give me a number.

So I have something to root for and watch and follow.

    Besides this crap.

There is no hope until Ruben goes.

  31. jeff of nova

    April 2, 2014 at 11:16 pm

Sorry I am not a Ruben fan but firing him doesn’t help AFW… If you want to fire him the off season is when you do that.

    • Andrew from Waldorf

      April 2, 2014 at 11:20 pm

Ive been calling for it for years.

When people would make fun of me for it.

I don’t care when it is.

But until it happens you have no hope.

so when they win games if it means job security for him.

I don’t know if its good.

      this is sad

  32. Andrew from Waldorf

    April 2, 2014 at 11:17 pm

    It wont be Bastardo

Ruben and the Phillies are married to their old washed up has beens.

We will get months of this.

Everyone in the world knows Paplebomb sucks.

    Except Ruben.

    I feel sad for Sandberg.

None of this can be blamed on him

    all year

  33. Hogey's Role

    April 2, 2014 at 11:19 pm

Unfrikinbelievable, I knew that was going to happen, time to demote pimplebomb to mop up duty only, what a worthless piece of garbage… 0 for 1 in saves this year, how many do you want him to blow this year before we can get rid of him???

Great signing he was, really put us over the top!!

I agree time to let bastardo become the closer

  34. phillyfan

    April 2, 2014 at 11:20 pm

The bullpen blows it again. This is 3 years in a row. Why ‘don’t they upgrade!

  35. Andrew from Waldorf

    April 2, 2014 at 11:22 pm

Isnt Paplebomb the highest paid reliever ever??

Who would make such a contract?

I know it is not protocol to fire a GM in a season.

    But do it.

It should have been Ruben last year and not Charlie.

    • Hogey's Role

      April 2, 2014 at 11:24 pm

      Should have been both

  36. Rob 311

    April 2, 2014 at 11:28 pm

    Andrew from wherever,
Sing a different song dude seriously ur so annoying with the raj stuff. I don’t like him either but come on Man U going to post the same garbage again all this year. I come to this site to read articles and what other people have to say but u make me want to stop coming here. Just give it a break. Everyone knows he’s not a good gm be a good fan and just deal with it or show ur frustration and don’t watch or buy tickets.

  37. cxl72

    April 2, 2014 at 11:32 pm

This is the same GM that let a washed up Brad Lidge continue to close with an ERA over 7 in 2009. Look for lots of Pap. His 2016 contract vests with 100 games finished this year and next. 99 more to go.

Petition to change the Jeltz Award to the Papelbon.

    • Brooks

      April 3, 2014 at 9:41 am

Its not a bad idea Morris.
However, the implication with Jeltz is that it was just a boneheaded game with terrible play.
For the Papplebon, I think it has deeper meaning – starting with the basic Jeltz award but going deeper into arragance, overpriced along with a big mouth – a primadonna if you would who sucks. It might be a whole new category of bum because he sure isn’t liked in this city either where I dont remember if Jeltz was hated like Pappy.
Yeah, the more I think about it, a monthly “Pappy” award or even yearly naming one player who has sunk below the mendoza line in play and character.
