Another sweep! Phillies beat Rays, 10-4, with big hits

The Phillies are hot.

The boys won their sixth-straight game on Sunday with a 10-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. In sweeping the Rays, the Phils move to 9-5.

There were two big blasts in this game: Down 2-1 in the third inning, Scott Kingery smoked a bases-loaded double off the center field fence. Then, in the eighth inning, Aaron Altherr added some insurance via a three-run home run to left field. The Phils worked walks, came up with big hits, and kept innings humming.

Ben Lively pitched like a No. 5 starter, going just four and giving up three runs. The bullpen did a fine job filling out the game, with Hoby Milner, Yacksel Rios, Luis Garcia and Edubray Ramos proving successful.

Phillie hitters walked 6 times, pitchers yielding only 2. Large factor in a 6 run win in a game where they were outhit by 3. By day’s end, depending on action the rest of the day, Phils could be 2nd in the NL in walks. Last year, they were something like 11th out of 15 teams.

Being patient at the plate is at least moderately debatable. You might miss some hittable pitches by being too patient. More often than not, seems right to think more pitches you see, more likely the Pitcher is to make a mistake, let alone preventing a pitcher from staying in longer than you want.

But today’s a great example of where the patience paid off.

Ken, agree. I looked at the box score and asked myself – “How did they score 10 runs on 8 hits?”

      6 BBs is the answer.

What prompted me to point that out was the 10 on 8 hits stood out and seemed to supplement the point made in the article about the big hits mentioned in the headline. 3 of the walks scored, which is good, but the timely hitting was more of a factor. I called it a large factor above. They call that fake news, I guess. You’d be better off agreeing with that modified view.

We’re bad mouthing Lively for how he pitched? I never saw him shake off a sign, but he was hurt on 2 strike pitches. That is another case of the bench coaching by a spreadsheet, and not the game in front of them. He was keeping them down with a fastball, but was continually asked to throw an offspeed pitch that wasn’t breaking. I’m sure Ben would say it was his fault, but that’s on the coaches after the 3rd time it happens. Good win. Go Phillies
