Heyman: It’s Phils, Yanks Bidding Big For Lowe

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, December 09, 2008 03:44 PM

Back to Lowe, Jon Heyman reports the Phillies and Yankees are going tit for tat for Derek Lowe:

An official with one team interested in Lowe said he was “shocked” how high the bidding appears to be going.

That team might be the Mets, or Red Sox, who Heyman said are “discouraged” by the price: five years, $80 million.

I’d be discouraged too. Five years?

  1. Matt Says:

It would be negligent of a GM to sign Derek Lowe for 5 years. I just hope it’s not the Phillies who do it. For a team that is parsing a couple of million dollars on Moyers 2 year deal (reportedly), offering anything more than 3 years at that kind of money is nuts.

  2. MA Phanatic Says:

oh boy this is getting out of hand. This is what makes baseball so good. Even in the offseason, it’s impossible for fans to keep up. If this deal is 5 years, welcome to New York Derek Lowe. I’d be STUNNED if the Phillies went 5 years with Lowe…

  3. NEPA Says:

No way can I see the Phils giving Lowe 5 years. Yankees must be coming to the realization they’re not getting CC.

  4. Chris.I Says:

This is why the Phillies never make any blockbuster deals, because there always affraid of that extension…Well today I hope that changes! We need Lowe..Whether its 5 years or not, Amaro stop being a P*ssy and get this deal done

  5. metsblow4show Says:

If the Phils are going head to head with the Yankees at 5/80 Mil for Lowe then Ruben is showing some serious balls. I love Lowe but 5 years scares me a bit for a guy who will be 41 by the end of the contract. But if this report is true, you gotta love the fact that he is willing to pay with the big boys.

  6. Wilson Says:

I too commend Ruben for showing that he’s got a pair….but this is a little ridiculous

  7. MP Says:

I don’t like the 5 years/80. If we’re gonna give a long term pitcher money, get it to Hamels first. I don’t think this is a likely Phils deal. Lowe at 41 doesn’t seem promising to me at all. I mean it just doesn’t fit – they’re arguing with Moyer about 8 mil? I think any hope of Lowe coming here is done. I think CC will stay in MIL and Lowe goes to the NYY.

  8. Maverick Says:

This is Balls and I like it.

The upside is – Lowe makes us a serious contender to repeat.

The downside – Lowe maybe a backend rotation guy for years 4 and 5.

My thinking is so what. The reward outweighs the risk. If he helps us win again in the next 2-3 years its worth paying the extra. We ate Adam Eatons salary that didn’t slow us down.

  9. NEPA Says:

I also love the fact that he’s showing he’s got a pair on him and he’s willing to spend, but this would be outrageous for us to do. 5 years/80 Mil isn’t worth it. How great would a 1-2 punch of Hamels and Lowe be though, especially if the bullpen stays healthy and intact.

  10. Robbi P Says:

One of the craziest rumors so far haha
Phillies have expressed interest in Andy Pettitte

  11. Chris.I Says:

Anyone hear about the Phillies might be interested in Pettite now if they don’t resign Moyer? This is just getting crazy

  12. Maverick Says:

    Seriously?

Why are people so worried about how good or bad lowe will be in year 5.

What about how potentially nasty our rotation could be next year and the year after that. Hamels, Lowe, Meyers, Blanton, and whoever emerges as a star for the 5th spot.

And btw…offering Moyer 14mil is very generous. the fact that he wants 18 is rediculous. Has he been hangin out with Manny?

  13. NEPA Says:

Haha, no way Pettite would ever become a Phillie at this point in his career. The only thing I could think of is that the Phils would express interest in Pettite to try and hurry up things with Moyer.

  14. hehe Says:

    We got KRod!!!!!

  15. Tyler Says:

    K-Rod!

  16. Chris.I Says:

Okay, well we got lights out lidge..And your point is? You still need a Ryan Howard, an Utley, a Hamels, and oh yea!…a whole new bullpen-LoL

  17. Tyler Says:

    Ryan Howard? David Wright
Chase Utley? June? 5 Month Out?

    Jose Reyes? …
    K-Rod? …
    Santana? …

  18. Chris.I Says:

I forgot about Santana..But seriously Mets still suck-LoL Jk. Nah they don’t suck. I just dislike them

  19. psujoe Says:

I want Lowe as much as the next guy, but $80 mill over 5 is too steep. Sounds like it’s still going up. Time to get creative.

  20. Chuck P Says:

The Muts overpaid for K-Rod… hoorraay!!! I can’t wait to see how quickly he crumbles under the pressure of playing in NY or gets caught up in the night life (just like the rest of them).

5 years at $16m/year is a bit much… but it if takes an extra year, maybe you go for it. He’s not a power pitcher so durability shouldn’t be a huge concern… there is no reason to think that he won’t be effective pitcher in his early 40’s. It’s risky and it’s ballsy but if we’re losing Myers next year and Moyer this year we are gonna need some help and this guy has proven that he can pitch in hostile situations. This is a good year to nab FA pitchers because there are three or four big names out there. I wish that we could keep Moyer around but it sounds like his demands are too high.

  21. Matt Kwasiborski Says:

K-Rod blew 8 saves last year. He will need to be perfect just to catch us next year. And in all probability K-Rod will be on the DL by September.

  22. metsblow4show Says:

K-Rod is no better then Billy Wagner, so the way I look at it, they are practicaly the same team that started last year. Tyler, I’d put your hard-on away til your Muts at least make the playoffs. I’m looking foward to K-Rod throwing his heat against our lefthanded bats, I see a few more blown saves.

  23. mike mike Says:

There really can’t be anyone who believes the phillies are going after lowe. And are talking five years. Come on this is just some writer putting out a lot of stuff to draw interest. The phillies won’t be doing anything until all the top players sign. Like last year then go after a right handed bat for left like a jenkins and a cheap alterative for chase until he comes back.

  24. mike mike Says:

Matt and others K-Rod saved 62 games. that is about 40 perentage of there wins. But he blew 8 games out of 70 . he is 28 years old and a star reliever. The mets signed him cheaper than they thought and less years. so now they can go after a top starter and more bullpen help. We will get punto marquiz and that will counter the mets and braves moves. Chris and others believe it will be okay if not marquiz then wolf. what a joke.

  25. Manny Says:

I’m extremely happy that the Phils are going hard for Lowe! I was thinking more along the lines of a 4 year deal… but I’d still do 5 for a guy who is that consistent. It would still be 16 million per year… which is a smaller toll on our yearly payroll than what our good friend Jamie is demanding (18M).

Also keep in mind that if Myers leaves after next season, we will have Lowe there still for several years.

Lowe: be smart, choose the Phillies and let’s repeat

  26. Tyler (not the Mets fan Tyler) Says:

1st off i just wanna make it clear im not the same tyler as the one cheering for k-rod… mets suck amaro’s now huge balls… i do think that 5/80 is too steep… i say start with 3/45 & see how that goes… only hike up the price if the yanks do it… love the fact that amaro is finally being the aggressive manager we’ve always wanted

  27. mike mike Says:

Tyler you really think he is going after lowe at those numbers, come on

  28. Don M Says:

So you can offer CC Sabathia 5 years at $100-100 or Derek Lowe 5 years at $80 M

this must be a joke right??
