   wow. it is HIGHLY unlikely that the team will resign him given his performance this year and how much money he will want next year.

   They just read a report from the Phillies org., there are bone spurs on his x-ray and fraying and possible tearing of the labrum, they will seek a second opinion, he will likely miss his next start. (Being optimistic, I guess).

   With Myers going down and are prospects limited i say we hit a homerun with 1 pitcher and that name is Halladay why unload for a uncertain peavy worrying about his family and others when we can go for Halladay a guaranteed workhorse and a potential 20game winner year after year. I would rather unload prospects for him if anything.

   At the start of the year it was:

   Hamels
   Myers
   Moyer
   Blanton
   Park
   Now Park is in the bullpen and Myers is likely done for the year and maybe as a Phillie.

   Here is my opinion on what should happen:

   Hamels is the number 1 guy Period. Moyer should be bumped to the 5th starter. Happ is the 4th starter. Blanton is 3rd. We have many really talented minor league players in our farm systems to trade and Kyle Kendrick has had success in the MLB. We should trade kendrick and two other prospects for a talented pitcher like Brandon Webb, Jake Peavy etc. The question is who replaces Myers as the second starter in the rotation for the moment? Do phils bring park back in rotation? Do they call up Kendrick or another pitching prospect? Or do they trade for a pitcher right now? Who knows and hey Brett Myers might’ve thrown his last pitch as a phillie? Atleast Myers won’t break the all time record for most homers allowed by pitcher in one year.

   I really think if Myers hip was never hurting he would never allowed all those bombs and instead of that 4-3 record that could be 6-2 or somethin and we would won more games. I mean with that bad hip and all those homers he allowed, he was still pitching solid.

   Damnit!

   This is the kind of story where at the end of the season when your team just missed the playoffs, you point to it and say, “that’s where it started to go down hill”. It sure started last night.

   There is no stopping the bleeding on losing Myers. It’s go all in on Peavy or nothing pretty much. Even then, we still have Moyer and Blanton who are on this path of uncertainty. This is not good at all.

    mikemike, if you’re there, you know alot about the minor leaguers, the guy on now is saying that Worley at Reading is ready to come up, his coach is insisting he’s ready. Is that true, do you know?

    I agree on the prospects. I think we will see after the second opinion and the final report on Myers and see how serious the Phillies are about winning this year. I think we can realistically get Peavy or maybe Roy Oswalt would be another great pick up.

    Halladay would be the perfect choice for this team. Peavy’s worrying already has me off his bandwagon but if anything would make the fans happy its Halladay.

    That’s a damn shame. I’ll miss him also, if he doesn’t come back, even though much of the time he was never quite as good as I hoped he would be. However, he was a big part of the last year’s championship run, and that’s what I’ll rememer most about him as a Phillie if he’s not here in 2010.

    The thing is we are gonna give some talented prospects (not Joe Savery, Antonio Bastardo, Travis D’Arnaud and Michael Taylor) than we should trade them for a really good pitcher and the only one that comes to mind is Roy Halladay. I’ve been to many Blue Jay Games (I live in ottawa) and he is just dominant and calm. He is the second pitcher only in MLB History to go atleast 7 innings in his first 11 starts. He’s like 8-2 but he doesn’t get much run support and yesterday the Blue Jays bullpen blew a 5 run lead which got Halladay the no decision. The blue jays are struggling and they have a young rotation and are looking for young players and Halladay wants to be a winner.

    Halladay would be a good send no offense to Hamels and others but Halladay is currently the best pitcher in the game.

    They were throwing out Vance Worley as a possible call up for Myers at the moment.

    According to Murphy, Kendrick has no chance.

    Halladay aint going anywhere if the Jays stay somewhat close in the standings.

    Our prospects aren’t as bad.
    Drabek will be filthy when he is ready…which is a year away probably
    Bastardo needs more time..

    KK has MLB success…but his stuff isnt there, guys figured him out and he let it get to his head.

    Carassco is probably the closest they got, but I don’t think he is ready either.

    Donald, Brown, Marson, Mayberry….all trade bait at this point.

    Bedard, Oswalt…those are the 2 main guys

    Peavy i really doubt becomes a Philie

    I would much rather have Bedard or Oswalt than Peavy, as long as the price isn’t too steep. Halladay would be the absolute best option and worth the price. I think Toronto may have just got a dose of reality these past 9 games. They just don’t have enough to contend in that division. They have the best weapon, but not the supporting cast. Make the deal.

    Halladay’s only available if the Blue Jays don’t think they can re-sign him and thats far from being clear.

    Makes sense that the Phils will go for a rental here.

    So sorry to read of the results from Myers’ MRI. The Phillies’ have been thrown a curve in their outlook on the rotation and the recent good outings.

    The organization now have to set the wheels in motion on immediate moves with Myers’ probable DL stay and surgery.

    The temporary solution is looking within at someone like Kyle Kendrick who pitched 6 innings allowed 3 runs against Buffalo on Wednesday to lower his ERA to 4.25. He would probably be the choice unless they go to Chan Ho Park out of the bullpen.

    What happens when JC Romero returns on June 3rd will be another interesting situation. The only reliever in the bullpen with options left is Taschner. Unless the Phillies decide to keep 13 pitchers and go with a four man bench, they probably will optioned Taschner to the minors.

    Kyle Kendrick if called, will stay in the rotation until Amaro finds a pitcher outside the organization that won’t cost an arm or a leg and/or boatload of prospects. On the other hand, if Kendrick repeats his 2007 success, the need for another starter becomes moot.

    if they give up Drabek that will be the biggest regret for the Phils because he will be the second coming of Hamels. Halladay would be a great fit for the phils, but what they have to give up for him will tell if the deal comes through.

    I think I would rather look internally than jump the gun and unload for a rental…..this is the same situation that happened two years ago with Kendrick….and no one that he was ready and he held his own for the rest of the season and we won the division. The problem with the big trade is it’s more than likely going to cost one of the starters in the minors that is just about ready….which you then lose the option to replace Moyer or Blanton or Happ if it comes to that.

    It’s just my opinion but I think patience is a little more important here. The last thing we need is to bring a guy in that will help only marginally better for a too steep price because clubs know we’re straining now.

    It’s not going to be easy…but it’s not the end of the world.

    And that’s my two cents.

    Its not the Phils MO to make the big move. we were in essentially the same situation last year except in stead of surgery, Myers couldnt throw a strike and we went out and got….Joe Blanton when Sabbathia and Harden were on the market. I think Amaro is going to look at that and say why should I sell the farm for Peavey Oswalt or Halladay when we were beating Milwaukee w Sabbathia last season?

    HA! Dipsy there is no way he would accept that. He will want ten a year at least. The only way he comes back to the team IMO is for a one year stint at a bit of a discount to prove himself healthy. This BLOWS.

    If this was it for Myers as a Philly I won’t remember him as a dissapointment. The fact of the matter is that by going down to the minors last year and fixing himself he made this team a serious World Series contender and we wouldn’t have won it without him. That Sabathia at-bat will forever go down in Phillies folklore.

    The difference happy noose is that we did at least get Blanton and then Myers WAS our big splash when he returned. He was electric when he came back and was a solid number two to finish out the year. It looks as if he won’t be available to be that guy this year.

    How about one of those NBA type trades…Where one team says sure I’ll trade you my best player but since I don’t really want to your gonna have to take a bad contract also

    The Phillies get Halladay but agree to take on most of all of Veron Wells’ contract? (09 $10mil, 10 $21mil, 11 $23mil can opt out after season, 12 $21mil, 13 $21mil, 14 $21mil, 15 FA) or Alex Rios’ not near as bad contract? (09 $5.9mil, 10 $9.7mil, 11 $12mil, 12 $12mil, 13 $12.5mil, 14 $12.5mil, 15 $13.5mil club option w/$1mil buyout, 2016: FA)

    Philles trade Victorino and some combo of Carrasco, Knapp, Savery, Worley, Bostardo, Marson, Donald, Mayberry, Brown, Taylor…. and a lesser prospect or two?

    At first they have to bring up from within; here’s why…

    If they try to make the trade now, the Phillies are the ones that are desperate and don’t hold any leverage in the dealings and will be gutted for a guy like Halladay or even Oswalt.

    In this situation a guy like Kendrick seems perfect (or Carpenter for that matter). He is a guy who fits the bill as not going to bust onto the scene, because we’ve already seen what he can do. So he comes in and does the job and stabilizes the rotation then the Phillies can go into trade talks saying we don’t really NEED a new guy so we don’t have to give you everything. That’s the only way the Phillies can come out of thsi looking good. So I’d say wait a little while, see what our callup can do and then go into talks that way.

    Meanwhile…theres going to be a major trade by the end of the weekend. they basically have no choice.

    Kendrick, Carpenter, those guys cant replace Brett MYers. Carrasco is getting tuned up down there, hes not ready yet. Stutes regressed, Knap is too young. Bastardo doesnt have the stamina to start, Worley is a question mark, Drabek is to valuable to risk ruining.

    They have a problem.

    I think the smart move for right now is to bring somebody up to pitch and buy time to evaluate the trade market. I think one of the AA pitchers fit the bill better here than the AAA guys. If a lot of teams with good arms fall out of contention it could allow the Phils to get a guy without having to empty the farm.

    Regarding Halladay. If he can be had for a fair price Reuben Amaro should pull the trigger without thinking. Hamels and Halladay at the top of your rotation? That would be the best 1-2 in baseball by a long shot.

    Interesting if Myers has the surgery Chase and A-Roid had, how come Chase needed several months to recover and A-roid needed what two months to recover can anyone say A-Roid used some illegal substances to heal himself just an interesting thought!!!

    Now back to Myers, yeah Doc would be nice, Peavey no way, he is staying west, there are some free agents who didn’t sign because they were injured in the Off Season, one I am thinking of is Ben Sheets, sign him up Ruby, what can it hurt.

    Arod did not have the same surgery. They just removed. They will go back in at the end of the season. Im glad Myers is down. I hate him.

    Brett Myers has had a nice run with the Phillies, but it had to end.

    In a way, I’m kind of glad this injury happened. The last thing that I wanted was for Brett to have a 13-8 type year with a 4.30 ERA.. just good enough for the Phillies to get lulled into another long term deal with him.

    This injury won’t prove to be that bad for the team as a whole. Carpenter/Kendrick can come in and give 80% of what Myers gave you. I don’t think this is as much of a problem as most people think it is.

    Why not take a chance and sign Ben Sheets? That way you get an impact pitcher without having to gut the farm system by trading for a big name. Kendrick or Carrasco or Worley or someone can hold down the fort for a couple of months until Sheets returns with a fresh arm for the stretch run.

    Stop with the Halladay. He isnt available yet. The Jays are sucking now, but baseball is a long season and I doubt they trade him until August, if at all. And what is this Halladay + Wells for like 6 people? This isnt a video game. Those trades rarely happen. I can only think of one recently where a teams two best players were traded in one deal (tigers getting cabrera and willis), and in that trade the tigers gave up two stud prospects to get them. If the Jays are gonna move Wells AND Halladay, they arent going to do it for victorino and a couple lesser prospects. You dont build around Vic, hes 29 with plus defense, average bat, below average power, good speed. The most likely scenario would be Bedard. I dont know Oswalts or Webbs situation. They may have friendly deals that their teams have no interest in moving. Either way, getting an ace isnt gonna happen for less than 4 prospects, unless you give up 3 studs.

    Worley has 57 innings with 2.84 era has given up 42 hits. the phillies jump him a level along with Stutes, he is a college player, so that helps. no one has any info yet tried to see if the guys who write reports on prospect know anything, nothing yet, Bastardo is small and tends to lose some velcoity late in game, He pitch 7 great innings today, carpenter has been better as of late. the manager at reading did say he thinks Worley can get hitters out at the big league level. but only 57 innings a jump in class don’t see it. I think it Bastardo or carpenter. the phillies tend to move slow with prospect, remember Utley and Howard, waited a extra year. My problem with bastardo is four lefthand pitcher ,that would mean blanton would move to 2 after hamels,

    Dan…with all of the high profile athletes that are full-blown criminals nowadays, is it really necessary to always bring up the wife beater stuff? Listen the guy made a mistake, one that was public. I could name another 100 or so for you if you wanted. We can still appreciate him as an individual and a ballplayer even if we are disgusted with something he did in the past.

    Well first of all this just sucks for Brett Myers, a guy who, I think, genuinely felt he owed the organization his best efforts after last year, and worked his butt off to come to camp ready to roll. I think he was just starting to turn the corner for this year. If this is indeed his last act as a Phillie, then I’m glad that he, like Burrell, got his ring, at the least.
    In the meantime, I think we need to call someone up. As Tim said, we can’t overreact, because we’ll end up overpaying for a starter, mortgaging our suddenly deep farm system, and not getting the value in return we should be getting.
    I think Worley deserves first chance in the short term, with Carpenter 2nd. I think we could later bring up Carrasco, if he shows he can put together some solid starts. Bastardo I think has the best long term potential, but he’s just recently been called up to AAA, and staying there would do wonders for his development.
    I really feel like we need to take a deep breath though, wait this out a few starts, and then decide in what direction we should go.

    I agree with you Steve-o. I do believe that’s the Phillies organization approach to this dilemma with Myers. Obviously, any decision(s) to be made is on hold until Myers receives his second opinion from another doctor. Myers will need surgery during or after the season. From what I read, there is the possibility of a less invasive hybrid typed surgery that temporiarly secured the labrium until another surgery after the season. That is what A-Rod chose to do in his early recovery and return to play after minor surgery in March.

    There is a question in my mind about Myers that has not been brought up here or even by Tim Malcolm. It was reported that Myers has had this hip inflammation in various degrees of discomfort even before the season started. Did Myers withhold this information from Manuel and pitching coach, Dubee in hopes he could ride out the pain as the season started? Was there another reason for him not to reveal this problem that eventually got worst? Did he have concerns about his soon to be expired contract and possible free agency route during the off season? I hope not. I bring this up because I can not understand why an athlete making an enviable living would not take better care of his body in a profession that demands great physical exertion. If indeed Myers deliberately kept silent with his ongoing problem, he did a disservice to his team and himself.
