   Anyone else think Madson should be in the closer’s role, at least until Lidge gets his $hit together?

   part of me says promote madson to closer. the other part of me says leave brad there; demoting him would probably ruin his confidence in himself. tough choice but traditionally the closer should be the BEST reliever in the bullpen and clearly madson is the best one for the job right now.

   Nice win, it looked like Park was not long for this game. Nice RBI by Rollins, sweet baserunning by Werth. The bullpen has been solid all year, except for Lidge and we just have to hope he works it out.

   Madson could handle the closer role, but again I don’t see what’s wrong with Lidge. You’d have to use Lidge in a weird place, maybe 8th inning? I wouldn’t see him as a situational pitcher.

   ERA is just a stat. Its a great way to judge starting pitchers but not always for a closer. Lidge is throwing heat at 94-95mph and he can get his slider in for a strike or he can bury it in the dirt. Taking away ERA and one blown save, what’s different than last year? He’s got the stuff, he’ll continue to get guys out, just let him do his thing.

   What the hell do you mean demote him? He blew one save and hasn’t hardly had any opportunities! I agree he’s been shaky but it’s not like he’s been blowing a ton of games! If he goes out there and starts looking like Jack Taschner, then I’ll jump on this wagon. But Lidge is a great closer and some of you are way too quick to give the hook to him. He was perfect last year and he has plenty of time to get better this year.

   I’d like to think that Brad Lidge has bought himself some leeway in terms of keeping the closer job. He’s blown one save in his year+ with the Phils.

   1. Chan Ho Park pitched pretty good, but nor great even though he only gave up2 runs. Some of the outs he got were very hard hits balls, and he was a little wild at times as well. However, he got the job done. 2. The pen all around was very good even though lidge gave up a run on only one hard hit. The other two were weak pokers and a soft blooper than found land. 3. Rollins hit the ball hard several times and did not look lost or confused at all. And Kudos to Werth for a heads up play for some insurance! A W is a W baby!

    Yikes. They win a game and everyone’s jumping on Lidge. He’s been shaky, but you don’t take him out of the role. He had games like this last year.

    Yeah, I remember a similiar situation when Lidge had a shaky game like tonight. The date? September 27th, 2008. Geez, some of you really need to calm down. I think Lidge will be just fine.

    Lidge isnt the problem, the ENTIRE pitching staff has been a problem. I know we lost our bench coach (which I think had an effect on some decisions) but did something happen to the pitching coach, or anything else which would effect the entire pitching staff?

    Last year, he had games like this, but he also had games where he was lights-out. He hasn’t had any of those recently. He’ll (hopefully) turn it around eventually, but right now, he sucks.

    The problem is with the starters moreso than the relievers.

    Taschner and Eyre giving up runs when pitching full innings is a result of poor management. The bullpen as a whole has been solid. Lidge will come around.

    I was down there, 15 rows off the field behind the visitors dugout. Had an awesome look at the steal home. I couldn’t believe it. I saw him take off and stood up and didn’t say anything because I felt like the pitcher would hear me. Then when he slid in safe I was amazed.

    Maybe they’re all still a little tired from late playoff run last year? Aren’t the Rays pitchers struggling too? I mean, of the 4 Phils starters who played on the team last year, Hamels is the only one who has gotten significant rest at the start of the season, because of elbow during ST and fluke injuries later, and he is the only starter from last year’s team who is starting to pitch consistently well. Hopefully Happ can get some starts too, as he seems to be on target. Where? I don’t know. Maybe if Moyer can’t rebound.

    My reaction is the same as Tim when I read some of the posts here. The Phillies got a needed win against a tough Dodgers team after coming off a disappointing series with the Braves. Park continues to do well with another quality outing and giving a hugh lift to the rotation. And what do I read? Lidge “sucks”; he should be “demoted” in favor of Madson! (laughter) That’s comical. Some of you are certainly upholding the reputation of the tough and fickle Philly fans (chuckles).

    Werth was certainly feeling frisky tonight. FOUR stolen bases including a memorable steal of home. Wow! By the way, Just a week ago (May 3rd), Carl Crawford of the Tampa Bay Rays tied a modern MLB record when he stole SIX bases in a game, a 5-3 win against the Bosox. He joined three other players since 1900 to achieve that incredible feat.

    to say Lidge was shaky tonight is totally unfair. His stuff looked great. His slider was really diving off the table and his fastball was clocking at 95 consistently. they hit two seeing eye dribblers and a bloop off him. I think Lidge is fine.

    Wow. You’ve got to be kidding, Lidge being demoted? Hahahahaha. Come on, 48/48 last year with the postseason, and 1 blown save this year and you wanna drop him? Seriously, he’s a beast. Lidge has some shaky outings, but he wiggles out. Look past the ERA and look at the saves/save opportunities. I don’t care about him giving up one run with a 3 run lead as long as he gets those 3 outs. Lidge is the closer, Madson is the setup man and thats the way it should be. I’ve got love for Madson, but Lidge is Lidge and Lidge is the closer.

    I have to agree, I gave Lidge some crap last night, but by no means do I think he should lose his closer role, He usually steps up when needed, and era for a closer is not that importent, If he gives up three runs in one game, that is like a 27 era, and pitching one inning at a time makes it tough to bring that down. I also think some of you have selective memories, I seem to remember quit a few games where Lidge had 2 or 3 run lead and either let in one run or had guys get on base before he got the outs. So relax, it is only one win but enjoy it for a day. Lidge threw a lot of first pitch strikes, had good movement on his slider, and was 94 with the fast ball so IMO he will be fine as the year goes on. Have a little faith, and lets hope Jamie does not look as old as he did against the Mets and can pitch a good game tonight.

    I’m still trying to figure out why people are harping on Lidge instead of praising Werth and the whole team for an exhilarating win last night. The bottom line is that they won – it’s a positive thing, people.

    One more thing, I love Jroll on the field and usually don’t mind when he runs his mouth, the guy usually backs it up so I am fine with that. But his coments last night bug me, I don’t care how he feels, he should take a company line and just say “Hey I am not swinging the stick too well right now, and if Charlie thinks it might help me out, and help the team win I will will bat any where in the line up” not “I am the lead off hitter and should be batting lead off…” that kind of bugged me

    Because a lot of these fans are douchebags. That’s why.
    Awesome game last night. Werth put up a hell of a memorable performance.

    A lot of time you read the posts and think how could someone suggest that? But we must remember a lot of the post are teenagers, How can a adult say to make Madson a closer over Lidge. take out Jimmy Rollins. Park got them to the sixth inning and hit hard or not for him that’s good. Madson isn’t the closer and Rollins isn’t going anywhere. If jimmy hits under 250 and lidge can’t save games we lose simple as that. They are two of the most important pieces, and if people remember Madson has problems under pressure situations.

    Sorry one other thing. I wonder what the phillies do with two guys in the minors, who are in the top 100 prospects, are dominating there levels, and they are outfileders, Michael Taylor and Brown could possibley be ready for next year, With Raul, werth and vic There is no room,

    Brown is only 21 years old, and only at Clearwater I think.. so he’s not playing in the majors anytime soon.. (.288 career hitter in the minors).. he’s got lots of potential, lets see what happens

    Michael Taylor is 23.. only THIS year has he played any games above the single-A level.. 28 games at Reading, he’s hitting .298 (5 HRs, 5 SBs).. .368 OnBase%…

    I’m guessing he’ll be at Reading all year this year.. next year at AAA.. and then it gives us some room to see what we want to do with Victorino and Werth..

    Ibanez and Howard will both be entering the final season of their current deals.. and either one of them could be moved to the American League at that point to DH.. Howard would get you more in return, so the possibility of Ibanez moving to 1st base for a year exists… BUT.. let’s worry about those things when the time comes, not now

    Well this offseason will be the one they need to decide whether or not to give victorino an extension. I probably would give him a 2-3 year extension because I cant see Brown being ready until then. Taylor looks good but is still 2 years away, and will likely replace Jayson Werth in RF if they let Werth walk or Ibanez the following year if hes ready. Mayberry is interesting, not sure where he really fits in now given his return to normalcy at AAA.

    I would move Werth to leadoff right now though. With his ability to steal bases and his on base percentage hes a good option for leadoff until Jimmy gets himself right or gets himself traded.

    Except for the addition of Seoul Man (and the absense of JC), this is the same pitching staff as last year’s team. You remember them? They were the same guys who pitched gloriously all through the END of October. They were overworked last year AND they had one less month ro recuperate. We’ve never experienced this before from our pitchers, so we have no frame of reference. So instead of running around like Chicken Little thinking the sky is falling, cut the staff some slack. It’s taking some time, but things are rounding ito shape. Cole had a great start last Friday. CJ and Park have each had 2 good starts in a row, and Brett is starting to look nasty again. And the bullpen is coming around, too. Sure, Lidge has given up a ton of runs, but he has only had six save opportunities, with only one blown, in 30 games. the way you guys are over-reacting to every little thing, you’d think Larry Bowa was back in town. Oh wait, he is, isn’t he.

    looks like Chan Ho Park has bought himself another start, maybe two. Honestly, if he keeps throwing quality starts, who’s going to complain? The better he throws, the more pressure it puts on Moyer and Blanton.

    Its all on Moyer and Blanton now. A few more bad starts from Moyer with no really good starts in between and they legitimately have to consider pulling him or DFA’ing him. Hes really offered little to nothing to this team this year. Same goes for Blanton except like two starts.

    Yea, that was a great effort by Chan Ho… hopefully he can keep giving us good starts in the near future. I wouldn’t say the pressure is on Blanton right now because he actually threw some good pitches in the past 2 games. It’s Moyer who worries me the most, but it’ll be a while for Charlie to take him off the rotation –even if he is sucking.. Looking at the “irrelevant” stat of # of wins, Moyer has 3.. and they will hang on to that until his record looks more like 4-9…

    Please give Happ a spot start! Saturday there’s a double-header…c’mon Charlie!

    Friday night, Blanton starts..

    Myers is starting the early game on Saturday (I guess to throw 7+ innings no matter what his line looks like)

    Happ is the favorite to get the start on Saturday night.. no starter has been announced yet though

    Wait, so Happ would be replacing Park? I’m not sure he’s the one who needs to be replaced, what about Jamie or Joe-boy? I’m just trying to forget the fact that Jamie pitches tonight, not something you want to dwell on too much until the actual event, and who knows, maybe he’ll have a great game!

    They have 2 games on Saturday… so you use an extra-pitcher.. in this case, Happ.. so that none of your other regular starters have to pitch on short-rest.

    Back to the game. I was literally laughing when I saw what Werth did. I know it’s only 2 straight starts but I think Park may very well be on the right track.

    I’ll be there tonight. I wonder if there will be a Wolfe Pack sighting haha.

    Yeah the only reason I wouldn’t use Happ on Saturday is if they need him in a game before that. If we are in the game and need a long reliever on Thursday or Friday I would use him and then call up Lopez or Kendrick to pitch on Saturday.

    Also, regarding Lidge…like two people suggested that he should be demoted and suddenly everyone reacted as if the whole fanbase thinks that way. If you read all of the comments you will see that 90% of us think differently.

    Also, while The Glide (L.A.’s nickname for Werth) has the tools to be a leadoff hitter, I wouldn’t move him any higher than 2. I want him swinging for the gaps, not trying to just walk and get on base. Against righties I would go Shane, JWerth, Chase and then swap Chase and JWerth against lefties like Charlie did last night.
