Phillies Survive Game One; Win 8-6
Posted by Amanda Orr, Fri, October 16, 2009 01:04 AM
It’s never easy. The Phillies survived an 8-6 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, taking a 1-0 advantage in the National League Championship Series. The pitching was shaky, but home runs by Carlos Ruiz and Raul Ibanez proved to be the difference.
There were hopes that Cole Hamels would return to form, especially against a team that he had so much success against. However, he is a completely different pitcher than the one who posted a sub-2 earned run average during the 2008 postseason. The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead on James Loney’s second inning home run. For awhile, it looked like that was all Clayton Kershaw would need. The 21-year old left-hander shut out the Phillies for four innings, but his 5.23 ERA against them this season showed that it wouldn’t last.
Carlos Ruiz showed why it’s ”Choochtober.” Ruiz is batting .348 with 10 RBI, five extra base hits, and eight walks in 18 postseason games. Ruiz’s three run home run gave the Phillies a 3-1 lead. In the same inning, Ryan Howard stroked a double down the right field line, similar to his hit during the final game of the division series. Howard’s 18 postseason runs batted in set a Phillies record. The Phillies took a 5-1 lead, but it didn’t take long for the Dodgers to strike back.
Hamels needed a “shut down inning.” He allowed a few base runners, but was close to escaping the jam. Andre Eithier grounded a dead double play ball, but Chase Utley airmailed the throw to first. The play was not fully Utley’s fault. Jimmy Rollins failed to get the ball out of his glove quickly. A run scored with Manny Ramirez due up. We all remember the troubles “Mannywood” gave the Phillies in last year’s NLCS. He had no trouble causing more problems. Manny smashed a deep fly ball to center field, stared at it for 15 minutes, then rounded the bases for a two-run home run. The lead was cut to one.
Hamels didn’t last much longer. He gave up four runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings. He struck out four and walked one. He now has a 6.97 ERA this postseason.
George Sherill hadn’t allowed a home run to a left-handed batter since June 14, 2008 against Adam LaRoche. The Dodgers acquired Sherill from the Baltimore Orioles for a reason: to get out lefties. Raul Ibanez had a different plan. Ibanez’s three-run shot gave the Phillies an 8-4 lead, and a little more breathing room.
Together, Chad Durbin and J.A Happ picked up Hamels’ pieces. Happ worked through a bases loaded jam without allowing a run to cross. Chan Ho Park, who just returned from a hamstring injury, was excellent in his seventh inning relief appearance. Park retired the three batters he faced and clocked 96 mph on the radar gun. On the other hand, Ryan Madson was atrocious in the eighth inning. He was lucky he did not allow more than two runs.
The ninth inning brought on Brad Lidge. Matt Kemp greeted him with a single. When the lead-off runner reaches base against Lidge, it’s usually a bad sign. However, Casey Blake hit a sharp ground ball to Utley. Utley made a fantastic play on a short hop, and was able to turn the double play. Ronnie Belliard flied out to end the game.
Friday, Pedro Martinez will start against former Phillie Vicente Padilla. A 2-0 series lead would be nice to return to Philadelphia with. Since the League Championship Series was extended to seven games, game one winners are 28-18. 29 doesn’t sound too bad.

*correction – Raul’s THREE run shot, not two. Great post and recap though.
October 16th, 2009 at 1:15 am
Raul Ibanez had a different plan. Ibanez’s two-run shot gave the Phillies an 8-5 lead, and a little more breathing room
that’s wrong…
it was a 3 run bomb…and it put the lead at 8-4
October 16th, 2009 at 1:33 am
we all know what it was, no reason for 2 corrections…AND DO I LOVE THE PHILLIES!!! HITTING BOMBS IS OUR JOB. STILL GREAT TO SEE BRAD LIDGE ON TRACK, I THINK HE REALLY CLICKED IN THE PLAYOFFS…although i will still be nervous when hes on of course.

You can tell that Lidge has his confidence back when after the game he interrupts the lame TBS interviewer to make fun of his suit. TBS sucks at baseball and I will not watch George Lopez’s new show.
October 16th, 2009 at 1:43 am
I love this team!
You look back at the game — 14 hits against, a costly error on a double-play ball, Manny goes deep, Madson gives up two runs — and you’re not sure how they won the game.
But win they do.
They’re just so mentally tough. That’s their biggest advantage.
Must-win tomorrow for the Dodgers. They can’t go to Philly down 0-2 and have to face Cliff Lee……
A win tomorrow and the series might be over. Lose, and we’re in for a long fight.
Let’s go for the jugular tomorrow!

“Choochtober” is tattoo worthy.
October 16th, 2009 at 1:47 am
I agree: TBS sucks.
Buck Martinez is generally pretty good.
But where did Ron Darling imagine that Ryan Madson has a good overhand curveball?
My favorite line, though, was when Chip Caray says: “If the Phillies hadn’t scored those three runs in the 8th, this would be a totally different game.”
Well, no sh*t.

Thats why the TV feed in my house is very muted and the computer plays the Philly feed while I watch.
I was in the Dominican Republic this week on business and Phillies fever has gripped the island as many have adopted the Phillies because they took the chance on Pedro. I don’t think Pedro will disappoint.
October 16th, 2009 at 2:39 am
Chase looked like he was out of it tonight and I do not say that just because he threw the ball in the dugout on the attempted double play. Acted like he was on pain medication. Wonder if the cold wet weather in Colorado caused his surgically repaired hip to ache?
October 16th, 2009 at 2:46 am
Wow! Just got back from the wonderful win of Game 1! The Dodger fans were their usual self, drunk, boorish, and profane. All the drinks thrown at me after Rauuul’s shot did miss, though one hit a girl in Dodger blue. But all that happened after we were interviewed by an LA Times writer asking visiting fans about Dodger crowds! Either way, AMAZING GAME! The only game I’ve been to that was better was MATT F***KIN’ STAIRS!!! Can’t wait for Pedro tomorrow!!!
I learned a lesson while leaving a ballpark after my team won 8-6, I was informed over and over that the “Phillies Suck!”, and that I suck as well. Ya know, it really makes me think…
October 16th, 2009 at 2:54 am
Padilla.
Just the what the doctor ordered.
Too bad they didn’t want to start him in Game 3, for a ‘Flotilla’ reprise-mock at the Bank.
October 16th, 2009 at 3:05 am
this came down to a battle of the bullpens. and supposedly their bullpen was far superior to ours. but ours won. JA Happ and Chan ho Park deserve the Ashburn. they saved the game when it was in jeopardy.
October 16th, 2009 at 3:54 am
Raulllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll 100+ RBI’s for the season.
I called this back in April. Much to the derision of some on this board. Not naming any names Tim Malcom ;o)

A displaced Phils fan in N Jersey. The media up here has decided that the Yankees will sweep (I do think they’ll win, but think it will go at least 6), and the Dodgers will win easily, since Torre coming back is a great story. I don’t understand it. Everyone says the Dodgers outfield is better (did their outfield start the all-star game?), their manager is better (Kershaw couldn’t throw a strike to start the 5th, let’s leave him in anyway – oops a 3 run homer, leave him in a bit more – walked the pitcher, well, let him pitch to the heart of the order to work himself out of it – yeah, I’ll take Charlie), somehow Casey Blake is a God (same offensively as Pedro, not nearly as good defensively), and of course, the Chooch factor – the real Mr October, can’t match up to the greatest catcher since Johnny Bench (3 wild pitches in one inning – granted, in the dirt, but 3?). I thought the Dodgers would take last night, and the series would go 6, but with the win, I can see 4 or 5. The games will be similar to last night, but the Phils won’t lose more than 1 (not even sure which one – I could see Pedro pitching a gem tonight).
October 16th, 2009 at 7:08 am
Mulvi, I made my first trip to Dodger Stadium in June and ran into similar accusations of sucking. “Defending world champions” is always a winning response in my book, but it’s probably best in this case to frame responses around our 1-0 series lead, and the fact we beat the Dodgers in five last year.
October 16th, 2009 at 7:32 am
Even though Madson got hit around a little bit, I think the bullpen was generally outstanding.
With this team right now, I can really only guess who might be coming in when Charlie goes to the mound or orders a pinch-hitter to bat in the pitcher’s spot. I didn’t really expect to see Durbin first out of the bullpen or Happ second. I was shocked to see Bastardo against Eithier in a tight game — and his giving up a double with two strikes really made things tough on Chan Ho.
Madson made a heck of a play coming off the mound and rifling that ball to second to keep the double play in order, even though it proved inconsequential. The best silver lining in Madson’s performance is that he stayed on the mound and worked out of his jam — and by sitting down Manny, who represented the go-ahead run.
I don’t know what to say about Lidge.
Utley looked OK to me. That ball he hit to the warning track in the 1st was DRILLED. He looked good rounding the bases on Howard’s double, worked deep into counts and started a lot of crucial groundouts. The throw was a fluke.
October 16th, 2009 at 7:48 am
I’m (unfortuantely) in NYC. Did the local media make as big of a deal out of Hamels “stare down” of Rollins/Utley after the throwing error as they did on the MLB network? Mitch Williams was fired up talking about it for a good five minutes, saying that it was “bush” and that Hamels mind is what separates him from last year’s success.
October 16th, 2009 at 7:57 am
Did anyone else notice how overly ecstatic Chip Caray was when he called Manny’s homer? It was way over the top. Probably the worst I ever heard. Check it out.
Question: Did you guys hear what’s the quickest route to get from Colorado to Los Angeles?
Answer: Huston Street
October 16th, 2009 at 8:12 am
the entire bullpen that got in the game other than bastardo and madson come up huge. and i like charlie vote of confidence with bastardo there, although it didn’t pay off, i could see him coming up big in this series against lefties in a spot or two. he was one strike away and if he had stuck with his fastball he might have gotten it.
and speaking of charlie, how about putting the green light on ruiz and ibanez in situations where most managers would want them to wait until they had a strike on them to swing? FIRST PITCH bomb for ibanez even.
one hell of a slugfest to start the series, i can’t wait to see how pedro does today.
October 16th, 2009 at 8:40 am
’survive game one’? bad headline, a road win to start the series is a steal
October 16th, 2009 at 8:53 am
Even watching MLB before the game, with the exception of Mitch they were singing the praises of the Dodgers left and right. Why is it that the defending world champions are lacking the respect they are due?
This has been so much fun to watch – unbelievable clutch hitting and frankly, much better than what we saw during the regular season and even in the post season last year. The Phils are outhit, yet are coming through with hits that are meaningful and put us ahead, time and time again…
Wow –
I still want a game 5 here at home.
October 16th, 2009 at 8:58 am
I agree with the Philly_Texan, Chippy made me sick – you could barely hear what the dude was muttering when the Manram hit that hr to draw the Blues within 1. Certainly did not hear anywhere near that jubilation when Chooch hit his 3 run dinger or Rauuul hit his.
Unreal
October 16th, 2009 at 9:20 am
Yeah I think Caray broke a speaker on my tv calling Manny’s homer…
October 16th, 2009 at 9:21 am
Beat LA Beat LA….I have a good feeling about Pedro pitching tonight….a very very good feeling. This team is ridiculous…i can’t believe people still doubt them.
October 16th, 2009 at 9:32 am
What a game!! GO PHILLIES! 7 more wins!!!!!!!
Now, Utley nearly blew it with his throw… the inning would’ve been over and Hamels would’ve escaped the jam with a DP — like in many 2008 games. That play, in my opinion, is why Hamels didn’t pitch 7 innings or so… It completely rattled him, and even though he threw a good pitch to Manny, he immediately lost confidence in his pitches after Manny crushed that one. He was done.
Chan Ho was philthy, and Lidge got the save. The bullpen is looking better. Choochtober is the real deal, and RAUUUUUUUUUL hit a huge homer against the Dodgers bullpen guy I fear[ed] the most in this series… Awesome.
October 16th, 2009 at 9:35 am
Chumley was intense. It was a fluke, timing. F Manny. It’s all about him. This is a team. I can’t believe how MLB & TBS tout this LA thing! It makes me turn off the sound. They are stiffs in that booth. Darling has nothing. And how about that interview with Lidge? Carl (jackass) whatever his name is doesn’t even finish the interview and turns to Ibanez. TBS is horrible. As is MLB for letting this crap happen. Come on and step up.. I’d love to see this series end quick, with the Phil’s scoring tons of runs!!
October 16th, 2009 at 9:43 am
Glad to hear that I am not alone in my views of TBS broadcasters essentially rooting against the Phillies. It was evident in the NLDS and much more so last night. That call on Manny’s homer was great as far as emotion, I like that in broadcasters. However, that should be the way you call them all the time and for anyone who hits a big one. Chooch’s was huge given that Kershaw was cruising to that point. Raul’s was even bigger given that the Dodgers pretty much got Sherrill to face Philly lefties in the playoffs oh and by the way hasn’t given up a homer to a lefty since June of 2008. Not to mention that both were 3 run shots. Did anyone else notice how every time the Dodgers had potential tying or winning runs at the plate they were fawning over the implications of a possible homer. I know I take it pretty personally when announcers lean heavily to one side but I am glad that others are as infuriated by it as I am. Let’s go Pedro, bring us home up 2-0! See you at the Bank for games 3, 4 and 5 if needed!
October 16th, 2009 at 9:45 am
TBS, a division of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., is television’s top-rated comedy network. I thought that was a good one!
October 16th, 2009 at 9:48 am
TBS- The Braves Suck station
October 16th, 2009 at 9:48 am
We should see about starting a petition to allow local broadcasters to call the games , on TBS and Fox, in the local markets of the teams involved and let these bums they found do the rest of country (I am ok with Buck Martinez). TBS spent a ton of money to get the broadcasting rights this year and these are the best broadcasters they could muster up? Pathetic. Ok done complaining, it has just been festering since the Rockies series.
October 16th, 2009 at 9:57 am
Brad Lidge is our Closer. Choooooooooh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 16th, 2009 at 10:02 am
A couple notes. One, chooch should be named Sr. Octubre. Two, the announcers are terrible and their love for manny is laughable. First, during the replay of his hr the announcers said something along the lines of “Manny knows how to treat a homerun of this magnitude, he’s done so many before” as they showed him doing his post hit bat toss and then stair down the phils dugout. Then, they cannot say that he was suspended for steroids of PEDs, instead they say he was out for 50 games. Just irritating.
October 16th, 2009 at 10:06 am
The TBS announce team was simply awful. Caray was openly slobbering for a Dodger victory and genuflectuing before Manny. My fave: “you get the feeling the more pitches he see’s from Hamels the better he will be..” Hamels whiffs him on the next pitch. Or my other fave: “These are two evenly matched teams, and I think the Dodgers will prove it….” Or my line of the night: “it may seem sacreligious, but Kershaw reminds some of Sandy Koufax…” The guy is a pathetic Dodger homer. And yes, he barely sniffs at the Ruiz dinger, and comes out of his seat on Manny’s.
October 16th, 2009 at 10:07 am
Also, hamels did not pitch poorly. The double play would have gone a long way, he could have gone much deeper. Second, the ball Manny hit he was looking for. Hamels made a superb pitch, but the fact Manny was sitting change up b/c he can’t catch up to a 90+ mph fastball he went yard. I say the Phils pitchers pitch Manny with inside fastballs the rest of the series until he shows he can hit them.
October 16th, 2009 at 10:07 am
This probably already got mentioned.. but did anyone else want to punch Cole Hamels right in the face when they showed the replay after Utley threw that ball away
Hamels watches the play, and then sighs and throws his hands up in disbelief … I wanted to strangle him .. you can’t show your teammates up, d!ck !!!
especially when you are getting rocked.. if you had a no-hitter going, I wouldn’t care.. but you sucked last night and missed your spots too many times
October 16th, 2009 at 10:07 am
Did anybody catch exactly what Lidge said about that interviewer’s ridiculous suit during the post-game interview? The clown didn’t even finish the interview with Lidge before turning his back mid-answer and tlaking with Ibanez. Lidge got in some sort of dig but the sound faded.
October 16th, 2009 at 10:07 am
Chen was nasty. His pitches were unhittable. He really looked good and hit 96 twice on the gun. When he gets his breaking pitch over with his heat, he can be so effective.
Madson was Madson, a run producing machine for the opposition.
October 16th, 2009 at 10:09 am
Hamels pitched GREAT the first 3 innings.. and then he started missing spots, and he started aiming instead of just throwing
that ball that Loney hit out was a pretty decent pitch.. a fastball on the inside half to a Lefty .. somehow Loney and Ramirez seem to feast on Cole Hamels
the above was just a rant.. Hamels pitched an OK game.. but I think the fact that he gets rattled, and shows his emotions when he’s on the field is part of the reason that people don’t love him.. and we’re all becomming bigger fans of Cliff Lee, Blanton, and Happ
October 16th, 2009 at 10:10 am
Craig Sager…..that is the clown who did the Lidge / Ibanez interview.
I couldn’t believe how he just butchered that interview. It really is horrible. Outside of that , has anyone noticed how bad the sound has been as well as the tiling of the games and delays!!!
Comcast should be doing this!! They have the cash!!
October 16th, 2009 at 10:10 am
don m You hit the nail on the head on Hamels. I am sick of him and his meltdowns. He is a sorry excuse for an ace. Gets a 4 run lead and gets rocked for 3 runs.
October 16th, 2009 at 10:13 am
Anyone know what happened to Orlando Hudson?? wasn’t he on the All-Star team this year … he looked COMPLETELY overmatched against Hamels when he pinch-hit in the 5th
October 16th, 2009 at 10:14 am
don m, completely agree with what you said about the missed dp. rollins couldn’t get it out and so utley rushed, they did the best they could. a double play is never a gimme, and even still that was only one run and we had a 3 run lead at that point. for hamels to be upset is ridiculous, he should have picked his teammates up instead of that.
October 16th, 2009 at 10:14 am
he got the win though….
team ball….
October 16th, 2009 at 10:17 am
I was being dramatic … he really didn’t get into any trouble until that 5th inning..
but I’m sick of his ON-FIELD drama … earlier this season he flipped the ball at Charlie that game when he sprained his ankle and had to leave the game (I defended him then as being a competitor and being mad at the situation)
..and I defended him last week saying that his regular season numbers weren’t as bad as people wanted to say they were.. and that regardless, those numbers get tossed out the window when the playoffs start
BUT.. he’s had two starts now, looked pretty sharp for MOST of his start yesterday, but then he started getting rattled.
He only walked one batter, but the Dodgers chased, and fouled-off countless HIGH fastballs with full-counts, etc.. (the umpire was all over the place last night, going more on situations, than any kind of established strike zone)
im just glad we won
October 16th, 2009 at 10:18 am
I agree that was bush league by Hamels. Surprising because this team is known for their composure. I’ll chalk it up to a bad moment.
WOW! What a game…
Chan Ho: love ya man, just awesome.
RAUUUUUUUUUUULLLLLL
I give Madson credit for battling. He looked bad, but to get out of that inning only allowing 2 runs really saved the game. He will rebound.
Brad Lidge, credit to you. U never quit, never gave in. He is starting to resemble the rock at the back of the pen in 2008.
Charlie was outstanding in getting those matchups. It got dicey, but I understood the moves he had to make.
Magic number: 7. Let’s get em one game at a time. LETS GO PEDRO!!!
October 16th, 2009 at 10:19 am
Whoops, how did I forget CHHHHHHOOOOOOOOCCCCCCCHHHHH! And Mr. Clutch, Ryan Howard!
October 16th, 2009 at 10:20 am
IMO the biggest difference between these two teams, is class.
What did Chooch and Raul do after they hit their homers, both just ran around the bases. Especially Raul he knew it was gone, and just went about his business and rounded the bases.
And then you have Manny Steriod Boy Ramirze pose at the plate and stare into the Phillies dug out. Hey Manny you team is still losing. I do not mind show boating when it is a Homer that gives you the lead or is a bomb, not that it was a sure home run, but it was not a upper deck shot. Round the bases and have a little class, when the game was on the line in the later innings with runners in scoring position what did you do, oh yea 0-2.
Ryan Howard did not have a home run, but to extend the lead he got his hit.
I would almost vote for Chopper for Ashburn, that was a key point in the game and he dominated.
And what can you say about Chooch, the man is clutch
On the Cole front, he did let that error frustrate him, and why he did not fire fastballs at Manny I just do not know, the guy since he has been off the Juice can not hit the inside fastball, really 3 straight changeups? Other than that I thought he pitched well, and I would have no problem with him pitching game 5 in phila. if needed. It would be nice to see a sweep since I have tickets to games 3 and 4.
Pedro can bring us one step closer this afternoon and really put the dodgers in a big hole 2-0
October 16th, 2009 at 10:22 am
Mulvi, classless fans there in Los Mexico, I mean Los Angeles.
I fell asleep on the couch when Sherrill came into the game. I’ve been working like a dog non-stop for weeks and was comfortable enough in the Phils chances that i could doze off for an inning or 2. I woke up when I heard the crack of the bat on Ibanez’ home run and laughed when they had the camera in the Phils dugout and here on of the Phils yelling “Sherrill, Sherrill” in a high pitched voice. Funny stuff. Needless to say, i couldn’t sleep after that. It was a somewhat dramatic game although I never doubted the Phils would pull it off.
Manuel is the manager of the playoffs so far.
October 16th, 2009 at 10:24 am
Should have left Chan Ho in for the 8th…but maybe Charlie didn’t want to burn him so he could use him tonight…the look in Park’s eyes was intense…if you have ever served or worked with Koreans you know they are total warriors. I live in KoreaTown here and you should see how people watch Phillies games just to see Chan Ho…they are so proud of him. And by the way…the Koufax remark is probably the dumbest thing I have ever heard.
October 16th, 2009 at 10:35 am
@ Trapped
That is exactly why Park was taken out after the 7th. Good news is that the entire pen should be available today, maybe with the expectation of Madson.
Happ, Bastardo, Durbin when 1/3 of an inning-so no real damage. Blanton will be available to throw and Im thinking Lidge is ready.
Here’s to Pedro going 6 or 7 strong, letting our offense do its thing.
It all should line up, their crowd should be less of a factor with the day game and probably won’t get their until the 5th with the 1pm local start time ; )
October 16th, 2009 at 10:37 am
I am going to personally ask that when a player strikes out or gives up a run, people who write on this site do not put posts on here about trading them or something! It seems like everytime a team scores, or we strikeout with men one we burn our rally towels! Please stop this! I know it is frustrating but I think we are all grown ups and it needs to stop! I do not post much, but i read on here several times a day and I am sick of this negativity every AB. Grow up and have some faith.
October 16th, 2009 at 10:48 am
Great win for the Phils. All in all, I thought that the Phils came in with a solid game plan and stuck with it. They showed good plate discipline all night and made Kershaw work. He struck out a lot of batters early (a lot of called third strikes) but we kept making him prove that he could consistently throw strikes and eventually the wheels fell off for the young lefty. The Dodgers seemingly have bought into the idea that the Torre reunion is destined to happen… consequently, they didn’t seem to be playing with that killer instinct. It was a great night to be a hitter (a lot of hangers last night).
Two side notes… once again, love hearing that other people muted the TV last night. Chip Caray should have been an abortion… that broadcast should have been an abortion.
This is the second time that I’ve seen LA in October and I’m not impressed… at all. It took them three or four innings to fill the seats and people were leaving in the 9th. Seriously? To say that Brad Lidge can get rattled at times would be like saying it’s sometimes wet when it rains. They had a chance to get on him and they chose to beat the traffic. Shame on those fans… disgraceful.
Torre is getting slammed for leaving Kershaw in… maybe my managerial assessment was wrong (I thought that they had the upper hand with Torre over Cha’lie).
No hits for Hudson or Thome, Sherrill implodes and LIDGE gets a relatively easy save… who has the better bench/bullpen?
Love to see the Park beard back in action… his stuff looked pretty good, too.
Big game tonight… expecting another dull LA crowd and a Padilla BLOW-tilla. That’s right, it’s Friday and that means that Vicente has probably already had his fair share of mas cervezas. Might be a slug fest… 10-5 Phils.
My $0.02.
October 16th, 2009 at 10:55 am
Let’s be honest about this game. The league dictated to Randy Marsh to make it interesting so Randy cut the strike zone down to a pin point. How can any pitcher pitch with confidence when he doesn’t have the lower half of the strike zone or either the inside or outside corners?
The balls and strikes calls this whole year have been a travesty. Fortunately, last night it went both ways. Unfortunately, it made the pitchers doubt they would get any pitch so eventually they had to give in and put it over the plate. Kershaw fell apart and Hamels wasn’t far behind. Sure did make for an entertaining game however.
October 16th, 2009 at 11:01 am
I hope Pedro is on his game tonight. It is a chance for him to solidify his name in history as a big game pitcher. Moreover I hope Vicente Padilla is his old self — inconsistent and out-of-control, as it is an opportunity for him to solidify his reputation as a head case. Next time Cole pitches, let’s tell him he only has to go five innings. He implodes after that.
October 16th, 2009 at 11:08 am
You guys have to start putting the radio on instead of complaining… lol….Of course I understand that some of you aren’t local so you can’t. The thing is, when the phillies score or do something good I never hear the tbs announcers because I’m yelling anyways.
October 16th, 2009 at 11:19 am
Is anyone as annoyed as I am at the biased TBS announcers? I thought I was watching the Dodgers own broadcast team at times. Even though they lost the game, the commentary was from the Dodgers POV. I am tired of it. Oh, and if we make to the WS and play the Yankees the bias will be over the top. Can’t the Phils get any respect? Afterall, we are the current champions!

I have to admit I loved reading some of the posts on the Dodger’s boards on ESPN…one guy had a thread “The one thing that bugs me” is the old washed up arm of Chan Ho shutting us down after we got rid of him…karma dude…and a 97 mph fastball…deal with it
October 16th, 2009 at 11:23 am
Pedro should beam Manny tonight if the bases are empty
October 16th, 2009 at 11:23 am
I think the Marsh was fine behind the plate. Yes I think the strikezone was a little too tight at times but he seemed to be consisent for both sides and thats ok by me.
Dodgers fans are some of the best and loudest in baseball………….in innings 3-7. They were pretty lame with the execption of their hero Manny hitting a HR.
I can understand LA traffic and being late for some regular season games (all parks are guilty of that). BUT in the NLCS to have probably 15-20,000 empty seats at 1st pitch is a flat out disgrace. Leaving before the bottom of the 9th down 2 runs? Disgrace. This stuff happens in the REGULAR season, not the postseason!!
October 16th, 2009 at 11:24 am
And their should be plenty of empty seats at 1st pitch today with a 1pm local start, hahahaha.
October 16th, 2009 at 11:36 am
I think maybe im just pissed because that TBS strikezone is constantly different from what the umpire actually calls ..
I understand that the umpire moves inside between the Catcher and the Left-handed hitter.. and that when a Left-handed Pitcher throws the ball to the outside corner, you can’t always get the best angle on it .. but at least be consistent with it , and I don’t think that he was last night ..
He called more strikes BALLS than he should have.. and I dont think hitters had a really good understanding of his zone last night ..
multiple pitches by Hamels looked really good to me.. and then they show the pitchtrak, and they were 100% in the zone, high enough, and caught the full plate ..
just something to bitch about really.. since we won its not that big a deal.. but it becomes more an issue seeing the pitchtrak on calls that don’t go your teams’ way
October 16th, 2009 at 11:40 am
bob,
I couldn’t believe that “fans” were leaving after Lidge got that double-play …. anytime the tying run is in the On-Deck Circle … its still a ballgame
Especially that guy that blew 10 saves on the road this season.. 2 of which were against the Dodgers ..
Also, In LA its not cool to wear the colors or gear of the team that are cheering for? because grey Ed Hardy t-shirts.. and stripped button-down shirts were more popular than DODGERS gear last night
October 16th, 2009 at 11:41 am
bob, it shouldn’t happen EVER!!
October 16th, 2009 at 11:58 am
You know I have never been a big fan of Hamels. I think he has all the talent in the world and when things are going well for him he just dominates but if things go poorly he falls apart like a house of cards.
A few weeks ago I got blasted on this board for saying Hamels was not mentally tough. Well folks, what you saw last night was exactly what I was talking about. Personally, I don’t think Hamels pitched all that badly. Three runs came off that botched double play. Had Rollins been able to make the transfer in time Utley would not have had to air mail the throw and Hamels probably pitches into the 7th or later. So I don’t think Hamels did a poor job at all. He continued to struggle with not putting guys away but he was able to get them to ground or fly out. That being said, I almost flipped my lid when he stared down Utley or Rollins or both. That is just juvenile and class less. I hope Charlie or someone sits him down and explains to him the rules of the game because you just don’t do that. His guys give 150% every game and to make a stink over one bad play is just unreal to me. It seems sometimes like Hamels is truly the one STAR among star players. He is every bit Hollywood and don’t be shocked if after his contract is up with the Phillies if he lands himself in L.A, and don’t be shocked if I am not upset about it. Hamels can be a Cy Young winner I have no doubt about that but he will always be a child on a field of men until he harnesses his emotions and keeps them in check.

Don M – I wanted to say something about the comment that you made re: Orlando Hudson. Earlier in the season, the media outlets were slob-nobbing the Dodgers for going out and getting the “O-Dog.” Then August 30th, the Dodgers went out and got Belliard to be their utility infielder; to be a guy that could provide some extra pop off of the bench. Within a month, Torre and the powers that be annointed him the starter relegating O-Dog to the bench.
I know that O-Dog struggled in September but I think that the Dodgers have done us a favor by giving up on him. He looks lost because he is! He’s a starter (and a pretty good one)… not a bench player. He’s a career .282 hitter but he’s also a three time gold glove winner…
We’ve seen enough of Belliard to know that he’s a VERY streaky player and a slightly above average defensive player… with no heart. He puts up decent fantasy numbers but he goes through stretches where he looks absolutely brutal.
October 16th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
Dodger fans suck….period. Totally lame. Empty seats…..yes….in the forth freaking inning!! I heard on the radio this morning that some of our fans who were out there overheard late arriving Dodger fans asking people how they scored their early run……so these loser fans were late and didn’t even bother to listen to the game on the radio in their car!!
Yeah…..Hamels……TOTALLY classless piece if sh!t thing to do. You just DON’T show up your teammates……especially when THEY helped YOU all season long. I am really sick of his prima donna attitude at times. No excuses.
Don M…I was thinking the same thing about the pitch track on TBS…The only thing I can think is that what they show is where the ball ends up in the catcher’s mitt….not where it actually crosses the plate…??
October 16th, 2009 at 12:07 pm
I was also very pissed when Hamels stared down at Chase/Jimmy for that play… VERY, VERY immature.
October 16th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
on the flip-side … how come nobody mentioned that Utley should’ve never thrown that ball to begin with ?? Once there was a delay when it got stuck in Jimmy’s glove .. and Utley wasn’t in rythym coming across the bag..
he should’ve just eaten it, instead of trying to force the play . .
bad play all around on that one
October 16th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
And the to slam his glove in the dugout, too. If he did that out of frustration for his own performance….fine. But if he did it because of the botched play by J-Roll and Chase…..then that’s terrible.
Original Chuck P…..count me as another who muted the tv….had the radio on even though the sync-up was a little off. These network idiots (and I don’t care which network) are really bad. And Carl Sager (the guy with the used car salesman suits) is almost comical. Actually, by then I had already switched to Post Game Live on CSN.
October 16th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
@Don,
I agree. If I am going to the game I am there EARLY. 1st pitch to final out. I’m gonna spend enough money anyway, might as well make it worth it! Never understood the “leave to beat the traffic”. You are gonna hit that anyway. Hell, hang out grab a beer for a half hour. Then leave the park….
October 16th, 2009 at 12:21 pm
Yeah…Utley botched that up. He’s lucky that it really didn’t cost them. On the radio, Wheeler actually talked about that….that he should have just eaten it.
Anybody else even mildly surprised that Sherrill stunk it up last night?? I mean that guys has been pretty much lights out all season…something like 2 runs given up since LA acquired him.
October 16th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
Hamels was in the wrong no doubt about it. How many times do Rollins and Utley save his ass? Plenty because this is baseball and you are not going to strike everyone out.
Im sure he got the business from a few people in the dugout, so this should be over. Very immature for sure.
I was actually happy to see him upset and throwing his glove, if it was for the correct reason-which I believe it was. He made a terrible pitch to Manny, it was low but it was center of the plate. Also Manny couldnt touch a fastball for a good portion of that game, if you are gonna use the changeup go low and away!
October 16th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
bob……my attitude has always been just that….that the traffic is gonna get you SOMEWHERE. Plus, I always figure that I’ve invested enough time and money for those seats….so I’m gonna get its full value…..even if the Phils are down by a bunch of runs. I’ve seen enough comebacks to just wait and see.
October 16th, 2009 at 12:26 pm
Chuck P, agreed. Hudson is a solid hitter and fantastic defensive player. I am glad he is only a pinch hitter during this series. Belliard went on a tear towards the end of the season so I guess he earned it. We have Utley and I’m happy with that.
Ed R, we have Hamels under contract, under market value, for the next few years. He very well could win that Cy Young award next year if he comes back with a solid pitch to complement the changeup.
2 years ago I recall some former pitchers, maybe ESPN or Fox commentators, who thought that Hamels would end up being a closer because he had difficulty staying healthy. I agree that he may end up being a closer if he can’t develop that third pitch.
October 16th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
50% of their fans are posers.
—
And Chuck, I was VERY surprised with Sherrill (the walk to Howard was hugeeee, cause he then had to face lefty-killer Werth with a guy on base…), but I wasn’t surprised at all with Rauuuuul getting that 3-run homer! Everyone was talking about Werth, Howard, Chase’s OBP, Hamels…. but many forgot about Rauuul.. I knew he was gonna do something big, especially since I got the impression that people (experts, reporters, fans) kinda forgot about him entering this series.
Similar story with Chooch… On MLB Network, roughly 2 hours before the game, they interviewd Amaro on the field. They asked him something along the lines of which player he likes in this series… and he said CHOOCH, who people forget about because he’s in a lineup of superstars…. and bam, that same day he gets a 3-run dinger!
October 16th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
Not that it makes an impact on the game itself (but certainly on our viewing experiences)…but once this series is over, I’d like to see the audio waveforms of each home run call and compare amplitude, pitch, etc. for home runs by each team. It’s really ridiculous. Damned if they win, damned if they lose.
And the Koufax thing is just absurd.
October 16th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
My favorite moment from the broadcast team was one of them stated that the reason Manny can not hit a fast ball anymore is because he has yet to get his timing back because of the suspension. The suspension ended in the first week of July. He can’t hit a fast ball because he is off steroids.
I am looking forward to Sunday’s game and will be sure there will be plenty of banners in left field reminding us why Manny can’t hit a fastball anymore.
October 16th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
“Manny isn’t Manny, without a needle in his Fanny”
… was one of the best sign ideas i’ve heard so far
…
Screw the broadcast team .. they want Dodgers-Yankees so that they don’t have to do any research for their stories before the games, etc.. As someone else said.. when the Phillies get big hits, i’ve been yelling and clapping, so I don’t even hear how much or how little they care about the play
October 16th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
Same here, Don… haha I never actually listen what they say because I’m too busy clapping and yelling and fist-pumping the sh*t out of thin air.
October 16th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Come on people, it’s time. It may be Chooch in the clubhouse, but Ruiz deserves a new name from the rest of us – SENOR OCTUBRE!!!!!!!!
October 16th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
What’s everyone’s opinion of what to expect from Padilla? Personally, I think his great game against the Cardinals was more of a case of overachievement than anything else. I can’t see any reason why we can’t knock him around pretty good.
I’m really a little surprised that Wolf didn’t pitch either last night or isn’t starting today. You know that our fans are gonna be ALL OVER HIM Sunday night.
October 16th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
The fact that Torre would abandon Hudson for a late season acquisition like Belliard makes me appreciate what Charlie does for this team even more. Of course, we weren’t floundering to wrap up the division like the Dodgers were so we could afford to “Dance with the girl that brung us” but Charlie does that stuff because he sees the bigger picture. In October, you need guys like Hudson and Lidge and Rollins and (insert slumping player’s name)… if you go with the Ronnie Belliard’s, you’re really hurting your team because a.) there’s a great chance that the streaky player is going to be cold when you need him the most and b.) the guy that you abandoned won’t have the confidence to step in when you need him.
October 16th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
I expect Padilla to be bad… really bad. This is the type of game that Padilla Blow-tillas. He pitched well against the Cardinals in St. Louis that was not a must win by any stretch of the imagination; already up two games in the series, the Dodgers were in cruise control… they also afforded him a couple of early runs to ease the tension. Everyone knows that tonight is a MUST WIN for the Dodgers and rest assured he will feel the pressure. I expect a tense crowd… an early start in LA (high noon on the west coast) means that the crowd will be a little bit quiet and certainly tense after last night. We have to keep a very close eye on Pedro; if he’s not dealing, we have to look towards Blanton early. I think that we jump on Padilla early, get into the pen and tack on a couple of runs. Initially, I though that it would be 10-5 but I’m thinking 6-2… Torre won’t let Padilla give up more than 3-4 runs. Pedro gives up 2 in the 6th and we get a two inning relief appearance from Big Joe followed by a combination Eyre/Lidge save.
October 16th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
Great point, Chuck P….Charlie may drive us nuts at times with his seemingly overuse of the loyalty card……but it’s true….come playoff time it’s a whole different game.
How he handled Lidge this year has been the topic of so much anguish and controversy. But what he did the last day of the season was brilliant…he brings Lidge for one batter to boost his confidence but, more importantly, to boost the confidence of the fans….because they in turn will stay behind Lidge and boost his confidence even further.
Charlie may sound like a stupid country boy…but he’s one of the smartest, most understanding of his players kind of manager I have ever seen. He’s exemplifies what a true leader really is. The best manager of anything knows how to motivate his people and get the best out of them.
October 16th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
Chuck,
I’m sure people’s opinions will differ on Padilla, but I certainly have my own. We’ve seen how not clutch he is first hand when he was in Philadelphia. All that’s happened since is he’s gotten older. I fully expect our boys in red stripes to rip him a new one, so to speak.
Phils in 5.
October 16th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
Is it 4:00 yet?
October 16th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Great posts that reflected my feelings. I was so irritated with Hamels’ behavior, especially when it focused on Utley and Rollins, two guys who without them the Phils would be also rans. It took audacity to throw a temper tantrum like that. Daulton and Ricky Bo went ballistic discussing that after the game. Dutch said Hamels would be having his teeth taken out if he did that while Daulton was catching. I think Hamels is a spoiled kid… but would love to see him pitch a no hitter like any other Phillies fanatic.
I enjoyed listening to Franske’s calls of the homers when listening to recaps on CSN. I noticed the bias of the TBS announcers but decided to ignore it as I am somewhat used to the no respect. Darling is a Mets pretty boy who trashes CBP while on air for Mets games. That guy doing the post game interviews is a joke. That’s why I turned it to Post Game Live, to get the real excitement from Barkann and Botallico with Daulton added to the mix.
Seats empty??? I always get to CBP early for playoff games to revel in the atmosphere outside the park. I don’t get any other way.
October 16th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
Yeah, that little temper tantrum by Cole was really uncool, and I heard the guys on csn postgame say that someone, probably Chase or Jimmy, would address it with Cole after the game. Ya know though, as close as these guys are and have been for years now, I’m sure they all know each others’ little “personality traits”, and maybe it’s no big deal to them that he does that. Maybe it’s like a running joke in the clubhouse and Cole’s in on it, almost like they expect him to throw a hissy, they’re used to it, and just chalk it up to “Cole being Cole”. Not excusing him at all, but he’s done it before, and so far it doesn’t seem to bother them.
Ahhh, the announcers-so unbelievably bad, how are there not more people out there who can call a ballgame in an unbiased yet entertaining manner? When the guy in the god-awful ugly suit just walked away from Lidge to talk to Raul, I turned to my husband and said “did he really do that?” Um, yep! How completely unprofessional!
Well, no more b!tching, thrilled they won, but a little sad that I had to shut myself in the bathroom for the bottom of the 8th and 9th….
October 16th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
He threw a temper tantrum … then Manny took him yard.. and I didn’t see Jimmy or Chase throw their hands up in the air in disgust ???
I really like Hamels.. so much talent.. he’s just too California Cool for this city, and I don’t know if that will ever change ?
October 16th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
No, Don, I don’t think that’s ever going to change, which is why I’ve always said Cole will not stay here beyond his contract. I really like him too, and he and Heidi do alot of charity stuff so I have to give him credit there. I also completely misjudged Heidi, formed an opinion based on her looks, and after hearing her speak, she is an intelligent, compassionate person trying to make a difference in the world. I think they are both good people, and I remind myself to not form opinions based on haircolor and fake body parts.
October 16th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
Cole’s a good dude. He was VERY accessible to the fans at Spring Training this past year and I think he really appreciates this city and its fans….genuinely. That’s why stuff like what happened last night is disappointing. It’s probably over with in the clubhouse…..at least let’s hope so.
October 16th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
@Rodger Dodger… go away… nobody likes you.
October 16th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
And if the Dodgers use THIS blog as locker room material…. HAHAHAHAHAHA what a bunch of pansies.
Manny- “Oh no! Did you hear what this guy said about me on philliesnation.com!? Boo hoooo wahhhhhh that really hurts my feelings
”
Really Rodger Dodger… I don’t think you know anything about baseball or the professionals who play the game. Go rally your own sorry fans, troll.
October 16th, 2009 at 4:11 pm
Heidi can talk? She doesn’t have to…
