Proud to be a Phan

I am so proud of the Philadelphia Phillies! Sure, we’re all disappointed that they lost, but I am more proud than upset.

These boys played terrific.  Their first win of the year came from behind, and that set the tone for the season.  The regular season and postseason were filled with exciting wins!  This team never quit.  Day in and day out, they played their hearts out and made this season an enjoyable one.

Thank you:
Jimmy Rollins, for delivering the greatest walk-off that I’ve ever witnessed.
Shane Victorino, for you’re blazing speed and 100% hustle.
Chase Utley, for being the man.
Ryan Howard, for your 45 home runs and NLCS MVP.
Jayson Werth, for getting better offensively every year.
RAUUUUUUUUL, for a torrid first half.
Pedro Feliz, for your fine defense.
Carlos Ruiz, for your hard work behind the plate and giving us Choochtober.
Clifton Phifer Lee, for being an unbeLEEvable ace.
Brad Lidge, for always making it interesting.
Pedro Martinez, for surprising me (in a good way).
Ryan Madson, for your team-leading 26 holds.
Chan Ho Park, for always being reliable out of the bullpen.
Cole Hamels, for your two shutouts this year.
Eric Bruntlett, for turning an unassisted triple play.
J.A Happ, for being the rookie of the year.
Matt Stairs, for drawing key walks.
Joe Blanton, for being consistent.
Scott Eyre, for setting up some of Lidge’s saves.
Chad Durbin, for eating innings in relief.
Charlie Manuel, for being one of the greatest managers in Phillies history.
Ruben Amaro, for making the right decisions.
Scott Franzke and the entire broadcast team, for making great calls.
…and to all the other players who contrinuted to the National League pennant: thank you!

Six years ago, I never pictured the Phillies being in back-to-back World Series.  The Phillies were awful in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s.  However, those bad teams made me appreciate this 2009 team so much more. This may sound absurd, but I would NEVER trade one of those losses for 27 rings!

I feel lucky to be able to have seen the Phillies in back-to-back World Series.  Thank you, Phillies, for a fantastic season.  I can’t wait to see what the future brings.  Let’s get to 28 before the Yankees do!

*I’d like to thank everybody who contrinuted to Phillies Nation this season. Tim, Brian, Pat, Jason, Nick, Ben, and Rob have done a terrific job this year! Thanks to you — the readers and fans — for representing the nation well!*

What a wonderful article. You really hit the nail on the head.
They way you thanked everyone individually, who were awesome and even the ones who were less then stellar. It did take the whole team to get where they got and they all deserve commending for that!
Have a great off season, and I’ll see you in the spring!

  11. Hollywood Says:

Hey, patty ny and Yankees 2009? I hope both of you go the same way Steinbrenner will be going in the next few years.

  12. Keith Says:

    thanks Phillies Nation!

please add accounts next year so we don’t have so many annoying, pointless, and useless trolls next season. :D

  13. bigbobster Says:

In many ways, the Jimmy Rollins hit in the ninth off Broxton was the highlight of an emotional 2009 season. The Yankees outplayed the Phils and deserve the rings. The loss is softened by the fact that the Yanks have the biggest payroll, and the best talent, in baseball. But the Phils have the talent to win it all next year. They need to add some bullpen and bench depth, no doubt, and enjoy injury-free luck, but they have the core team to be there for two more years. I don’t see why Cole Hamels can’t return to form. Remember, Cliff Lee was sent to the minors in 2007. Thanks, Phils, for a lot of fun. It was a great season, certainly the fourth most memorable for me since the late 70’s. (08, 80, 93). That’s saying something!

  14. karen Says:

That Rollins hit to put the phillies up 3 to 1 over the dodgers was definately the greatest play……..who will ever forget that radio call? I have it saved on my cell phone and when I am ready to do so, I will relive that memory as I will other memories of this season. Who would expect a team who got so far would have a fan like me who feels so depresed? I wanted that parade again but I will live and I am counting down until spring training. Soon I can have my nightly tweet sessions with my other phans.

  15. karen Says:

Also, the final game of the regular season when paul hoover got the game winning hit to drive in mayberry against the marlins was definately a great game too. As an ironpig fan as well, i loved to see my boys win like that….it definately shows that our team has heart and drive. the yankees may be the best but we are the greatest :)

  16. Greg V. Says:

    No love for Bastardo?

  18. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

As a life long Amazin Mets fan,,I can say we lost to a better team in the Phillies and have the guts to admit it.Phillies lost to a better team and youse guys should do the same and glad some of you have as this post shows.I was neither happy or sad that youse guys lost but the Phils had a hell of a year and hope we can continue with this rivalry that should have started a long time ago but I do enjoy it..As much as I will always hate the Phillies,I do respect them for they are a solid team and good competition.Hope to brawl with you all winter as well as next season and beyond.PS….I also watched the CBS3 morning crew singing New York,New York this morning and had a good laugh with it.

  19. Ashley Says:

Already looking forward to 2010.I hope to be celebrating my 19th birthday with the Phillies on April 3rd with a game against the Pirates.

  20. Smokey Says:

Amanda I think you did a great job here but after reading I noticed someone very important has been left out…Harry Kalas! Thank you Harry for giving us all high hopes! RIP

  21. Phillygirl Says:

Great article Amanda. I agree. I wouldn’t trade the last two years and this team for 27 rings. I have been a fan since I was born, but truly started following them at the age of 15 when Scott Rolen became a fixture. I watched all the lows and had some highs, but this team makes all the bad years worth it. Thank you Phillies! And all the Phans. Spring training is soooo far away!

  22. Yankees Says:

As a Yankee fan, while Im overjoyed of course Im surprised the Yankees had it so easy. There wasnt a moment in the series I was really sweating. Despite pre series media hype the Phillies either didnt play well or were just overated. It just seemed like we dominated you guys from the get go. If you didnt have Lee, you probably would have been swept. Tha gap between the AL and NL is so immense though so it doesnt surprise me. Yankees#1..

  23. Smokey Says:

oh yea the defending world champions were overrated. of course. go take a long walk off a short pier asshat

  24. Cole Hamels Sucks Says:

These Yankee fans on here are really just Mets trolls who are no longer identifying themselves as such. Losers.

  25. Bridget Says:

    Well said. I agree 100%.
Thank you Phillies Nation for being an awesome blog!!!

Spring Training will be here before you know it.

  26. Nah_Roots Says:

“we dominated you guys from the get go”

Yeah, Lee threw a CG in game 1.

  27. Shwa Says:

love this. it was a hell of a year.

  28. Pat Gallen Says:

Hope to see you all in Clearwater in just a few months. We will kick ass, drink beers, and root on the Phillies from the first pitch. See you all then!

  29. YanksBKFan Says:

    From a Yankee fan:
Thanks for a great series guys! You have a great team and genuinely scared me this WS. Also a great fan base that has an undeserved bad rep, most Angels and Sox fans are busy crying about umps and payroll and ignoring their own great teams. See you next year guys! (hopefully…)

  31. Jeff Y. Says:

17 weeks to pitchers and catchers??

  32. Amazinsux Says:

With all the low class New York trolls posting on this Phillies site, it proves one thing: NEW YORK is filled with slug “fans”. Muts fans and Spankees fans that come on here to only toss insults and ignorant comments are cut from the same cloth. Very low moral fiber. Eat it NY!

  33. Jeff of Nova Says:

Patty NY you are an Idiot!

The Phillies never had a 100 year drought that is Chicago!

We won in 80 as well and will be in it to win it next year.

I think it will be even harder for the Yankees to repeat next year than it was for the Phillies to do it this year, We are much younger and have a better pharm system. Jeter, Petitte, Riveria all get another year older! I am sure they will put up a good fight enjoy

  34. Mark Says:

  35. joedad Says:

    Nice article Amanda.

And a special thank you to Harry Kalas and your High Hopes. Let’s continue the tradition in 2010.

  36. Adam G Says:

Spanky you are a jerk. Didnt the Eagles just spank the Giants by the way.
This just goes to show the classless Yankee fans.
We have pride in a real home grown team.

  37. Ralph malph Says:

Phillies are a great team. I think playing in the much weaker National league hurt them. They need to play and develop the roster as if they were playing in the American League East if they want to compete. The Yankees were much better winning 4 games to 2

  38. bob Says:

    @Ralph

The league that the Phillies played in did not hurt them. They just did not play well enough to beat a great team. It’s a little consolation for me that the Phillies while not playing their best took a great team to 6 games. They just ran out of gas and a couple shortcomings hurt them.

I give props to the Yankees and thank the classy Yankee fans that have come over to give up props. These teams were damn close to even and I hope get another shot at them soon.

I echo this post, great write up.

  39. PhillyGirlinMichigan Says:

Nice Amanda…PN is a fun site for this out-of-towner… I can’t wait for next season!

As for the comment above about playing in the weaker NL.., I don’t necisarily feel that way..I just think for a series like the WS, the NL will always be in a weaker position because the NL teams don’t have to staff a designated hitter all year…you can’t just automatically turn your pinch-hitter/bench person into a star DH for one series..

  40. Branden Says:

2009 was a great season for my Phigten Phils, eventhough we didnt will the fall classic like in 2008, I have never been so proud to stand by my team. Same nucleus in 2010, with a chip on our shoulder= RIP all other 29 teams.
