Gamenight: Padres (10-16) At Phillies (14-12)
Posted by Brian Michael, Tue, April 29, 2008 06:52 PM
I would like to think of this game as a passing of the starting pitchers’ torch, but our young phenom has a long way to go before he’s considered within Greg Maddux’s realm of existence. The Phillies are looking to secure a winning April with a victory tonight and are riding the hot bats of Chase Utley and Pat Burrell. Shane Victorino has been activated for tonight’s game, but he’s not starting. Does that mean Jayson Werth is your everyday center fielder?
Phillies: Cole Hamels (2-3), 2.75 ERA
Padres: Greg Maddux (2-1), 3.66 ERA
Gametime: 7:05 p.m.
Weather: 59 degrees, partly cloudy
Lineup: Werth/Bruntlett/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Jenkins/Feliz/Ruiz/Hamels

Your gamenight beer: Well, no one quite brews beers like monks. Therefore when playing the Padres of San Diego, it’s only natural to go with an authentic beer made by Trappist monks from Belgium. The most notable (not necessarily best) would have to be Chimay with its many varieties. What better to nosh on than some fine cheese from the same region. Op uw gezondheid!
Go Phillies!
Phillies Bars
Posted by Brian Michael, Sun, April 27, 2008 09:35 PM
The Phillies failed to sweep the Pirates over the weekend by dropping Sunday’s game by a score of 5-1. The lowly Pirates were buoyed by a masterful complete game performance by Paul Maholm. Pat Burrell continued his torrid April with a double and the Phillies only run scored. Taking a step back, we will see that despite the loss the Phillies are positioned to at least go .500 in April - something we can all take heart in.
Since the Phils have off on Monday and Tim is taking a much needed respite to deal with his tragic fire, I will take this opportunity to introduce a new page on Phillies Nation - Phillies Bars! In our never-ending quest to unite Phillies fans around the globe, we have compiled a list of locations where Phillies fans congregate, no matter where you are. At the present time, we have nine cities covered, but we’re looking for your feedback to help fill out the map. Please leave a comment or send us an email with your suggestions.
Phillies Nation goes to Denver
Posted by Brian Michael, Thu, April 17, 2008 04:20 PM
Not to look past the Mets series this weekend, but I figured we should provide a little advance notice of our trip to Denver next week. As you know, the Phillies tangle with the Rockies on Monday and Tuesday of next week and Phillies Nation will be there for both games.
The Phils and Rockies have turned into somewhat of rivals thanks to the 2007 season. First, there was the tarp incident in which the boys from Philly gallantly came to the rescue of the Coors Field grounds crew amidst monsoon-like conditions. Then came the playoffs; and this will be the Phils first return to Coors Field since that ignominious series last October. The Rockies have cooled off since their torrid run to the World Series, but there is no doubt next week will see two highly competitive games. Kyle Kendrick will face Mark Redman in the opener and Brett Myers takes on Jeff Francis in the second game.
So if you’re going to the game, send us an email and we can work out the tailgate situation or just look for the big Phillies Nation flag in the parking lot.

If you are already signed up, don’t forget to show up to your draft or pre-select your players beforehand.
If you have not yet accepted your invitation, please do so today. Last week you should have received an email from “espnfantasy” with a link to sign up. If you registered on Phillies Nation, but have yet to receive that email, please contact us .
Spring Training
Posted by Brian Michael, Fri, March 21, 2008 12:15 PM
No matter if a team is doing well or not in March, one can always ask, “Is Spring Training really that important?” In the Phillies particular case this pre-season, the question is, “Should we be concerned by their 9-13 record?” I always tend to think we should because of how it helped the 1993 team start the season and hold onto first place throughout the year. Certainly though a good Spring does not equate to a playoff season; here is how the Phillies have fared the past 5 years:
10-17 - 2003 - 86-76
10-21 - 2004 - 86-76
11-18 - 2005 - 88-74
19-11 - 2006 - 85-77
11-18 - 2007 - 89-73
9-13 - 2008 - ??-??
Only once in that period did the Phillies leave Florida with a winning record but that was the same year they had the least amount of wins in the regular season.
Based on the short trip we made to Clearwater earlier in the week, I would say the Phillies record does not accurately reflect their progress in Spring Training. Unlike last year, Ryan Howard was swinging the bat well and Chase and Jimmy were circling the bases constantly. Even Adam Eaton had a solid outing on Saturday against the Twins. They did lose six straight games and gave up a lot of runs two weeks ago, but the pitching staff seems to have settled down since then. So this year, I’m not as worried as I normally am. At this point, I’m just excited for the season to start.
Spring Training is important because it is fun. Check out our photos from the trip, including the St. Patrick’s Day win over the Indians. Also, below are a few videos of the sights we saw and people we met along the way (click “Browse Video List” to see the full set).
