Sielski: Rollins’ Slight Tarnishes Image

Mike Sielski of the Bucks County Courier Times wrote an interesting column about Jimmy Rollins’ actions after Thursday’s win over Washington. According to Sielski, the NL MVP shunned the media after recording a post-game on-field interview.

Sielski cites Rollins’ vocal leader responsibilities as the reason he thinks the shortstop made the wrong move. He writes:

“There are consequences and expectations that accompany being vocal, being brash, and Rollins fulfilled only one Thursday. He made the key play in a vital win, a brilliant bit of hustle and headiness that saved the Phillies from an embarrassing three-game sweep at the hands of a team that’s not supposed to beat them. ‘That shows why he’s our team leader.’ Victorino said.

Good, because the aftermath didn’t.”

It’s probably too early to admonish Rollins for this kind of move; I mean, the team is only 1-2. Maybe if they’re 4-11 again I can see this being a problem — a man has to own up and act as leader in sunshine and rain. But to call Jimmy out like this at this point? Set down the controversy controller, Mike.

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
