Braves’ Hampton Back On DL

If anyone had “during his first start” on the “Mike Hampton to the DL” pool, you actually just missed. If you had “during the warmup pitches before his first start,” you got it dead on — collect your year’s supply of scrapple.

Hampton has a strained left pectoral muscle — it happened during those warmup pitches. Says manager Bobby Cox:

“It’s unbelievable something else could pop up like that but it did. … He felt it a little bit the other day tossing the ball and we didn’t think much of it, to be honest with you.”

It was a question in itself whether Hampton could pitch through an entire season. He hasn’t started since 2005. Now he’ll go on the 15-day DL, retroactive to March 30. Jo-Jo Reyes will take his place on the roster and Chuck James will take his place in the rotation.

Tough blow for the Braves, but you know, this wasn’t too much of a reach.

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
