Phillies Lose Marathon to Mets, 2-1 in 14

There was a baseball game that went on at Citizens Bank Park, but something much larger and more important was happening in our Nation’s Capital.

In Washington D.C., President Barack Obama told the world that Osama bin Laden had been killed by American forces in Pakistan, a monumental achievement for the war on terrorism. Kudos to the men and women who serve (and have served) our country and allow us freedom. There was also a great moment at Citizens Bank Park when the fans began to chant “USA! USA! USA!” after word had spread about the news of bin Laden’s death. Here is the video of the fans chanting.

Back to the game – it was downright ugly. Only one man, Ronny Paulino, did damage throughout the night, as he finished up 5-for-7 with the game-winning RBI in the 14th inning, pushing the Mets to a 2-1 win. The Phillies were unable to sweep because their offense was unable to do much of anything.

Just seven hits, with only one of the extra-base variety, was all the Phillies could manage against Chris Young and company. Young went seven innings without allowing a run, while striking out seven. Ryan Howard knocked in the only run of the night for the Phillies with an opposite-field single scoring John Mayberry Jr. in the eighth. On the other side, Cliff Lee struggled throughout, somehow managing seven innings, although he tossed 34 pitches in the first inning.

Kyle Kendrick was the losing pitcher, giving up one run in three innings. Taylor Buchholz got the win, throwing two clean innings.

So, while the Phillies lost this game, remember to put it in perspective; it’s just a game. America scored a major win tonight.
