Phils Squeak Out Win Over Fish

PHOTO: AP

It wasn’t a game in which the outcome was ever certain. Jimmy Rollins led off the game with a home run, and that was the last of the scoring. Kyle Kendrick tossed seven scoreless innings and the Phillies took away the 1-0 win. Here are some other notes:

KYLE KENDRICK PITCHED…WELL?

Starter Kyle Kendrick pitched outstanding tonight. He threw seven scoreless innings, allowing just five hits while striking out seven. Coming into the game, he had been 0-1 with a 9.82 ERA since the Joe Blanton

trade. Here’s his line:

7.0 IP/5 H/0 R/0 ER/0BB/6 K

His counterpart, Josh Johnson, pitched argulably just as well. Johnson tossed eight innings while giving up just one run on three hits. Here’s his line:

8.0 IP/3 H/1 R/1 ER/1 BB/7 K

STUDLY ‘PEN

Kendrick threw the seven scoreless, but it was up to Josh Lindblom and Jonathan Papelbon to pitch in the high leverage situations to secure the win. And they did. They each threw a scoreless inning, throwing eighteen pitches, with ten strikes. This was Papelbon’s 26th save of the year, and he lowered his season ERA to 2.81.

GAME NOTES: The Phillies play the third and final game against the Fish tomorrow at 12:40 PM (yes, you read that right) with Roy Halladay (6-6, 3.80 ERA) pitching for the Phillies and Mark Buehrle (9-11, 3.80 ERA) pitching for the Marlins.
