Severino Gonzalez dealt to Miami

The Phillies on Tuesday traded Severino Gonzalez to the Miami Marlins. The return: Our old friend cash considerations. Or a player to be named later. One of them.

Gonzalez, 24, was signed by the Phils as an amateur free agent in 2011. He surged through the farm system, finding himself in Reading by 2013. Despite not pitching very well as a starter in Reading or Lehigh Valley – to be fair, he was very young for both levels – Gonzalez reached the majors in 2015 and went 3-3 with a 7.92 ERA in 30 innings.

He was converted to a reliever and pitched better in Reading and Lehigh Valley in 2016 (still pretty young for those levels) and came back to the Phils for a spell. Again, not great: 1-2 and 5.60.

But with all the highly regarded (read: the guys have better stuff) pitching in the upper levels of the system, Gonzalez became expendable. He was designated for assignment after the Phils signed Michael Saunders last week. And now he’s off to Miami.
