Winter Meetings Thursday: Rumors and updates

The Winter Meetings continue!

Consider this your rumor and update depot. Refresh for the newest stuff, whether it’s a garbled tweet or actual news (that we’ll cover in more depth later). Follow us on Twitter for more.

Here’s Wednesday’s stuff, from the Carlos Gonzalez talk to the heightened Machado rumors.

Here’s Tuesday’s stuff, from the Jake Arrieta scuttlebutt to the Tommy Hunter signing.

And here’s Monday’s stuff, from the Manny Machado rumors to the Pat Neshek signing.

9:18 a.m.: Burdi, who will be 25 next year, is injury prone. He put up a 0.53 ERA in 14 games, striking out 20 and walking four for double-A Chattanooga before tearing his UCL, which led to Tommy John surgery.

So Burdi can go onto the 60-day disabled list. But then, once he recovers, he will have to both go onto the 40-man and 25-man rosters. Rule 5 rules still apply. The Phils are betting on Burdi to rehabilitate and be good enough to be a major leaguer by late 2018.

Or they’ll trade him, as multiple reporters are saying.

9:16 a.m.: The White Sox select Carlos Tocci from the Phillies farm system in the Rule 5 Drat.

9:15 a.m.: The Phillies select Nick Burdi, a right-handed pitcher from the Twins farm system, in the Rule 5 Draft.

9:13 a.m.:

Now Jon Heyman says there’s “no expectation” that Machado would open the negotiation window for a long-term deal. That would make him a rental, which doesn’t make sense for the Phils.

9:06 a.m..: It’s the final day of the Winter Meetings. Which means it’s Rule 5 Day. We’ll update you as soon as the Phils (possibly) pick and (possibly) lose any players.

Also, Machado Watch continues. Bob Nightengale tweeted early in the morning that the Orioles feel they can get a deal done by late this week with a team. The Phillies are players, but Ken Rosenthal reported that the White Sox were being very aggressive. One wrinkle, as always, is the possibility for a long-term extension, which both the Phils and Sox would need. If they don’t get it, the Sox could flip Machado to a team needing a rental, Rosenthal continued.

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
