Phillies reportedly interested in Sergio Romo

Even after the signing of Zack Wheeler, the Philadelphia Phillies have a number of holes to fill in other areas — one being the bullpen. Injuries decimated the Phils relievers last season and heading into 2020 there are plenty of question marks as to who fits where.

With the Winter Meetings underway in San Diego, the Phillies have already been linked to a former three-time World Series Champion reliever.

According to MLB Insider Jon Heyman, the Phillies are showing interest in veteran right-hander Sergio Romo. Other suitors include the Marlins, Red Sox, A’s, Twins and Giants.

Romo, 36, spent the 2019 season split between the Miami Marlins and Minnesota Twins, compiling a 3.43 ERA and 8.95 K/9 in 65 appearances. He has a career 3.55 ERA in 29 postseason games.

Adding Romo would assuredly give the Phillies a strong option towards the back end of the bullpen. It also wouldn’t cost the organization too much. Romo has been signed to deals between $2.5 and $3 million over the last three seasons and despite his good numbers in 2019, he’s entering his age-37 campaign and shouldn’t demand that big a payday.
