Phillies Nation Perfect Season: 1996 Phillies win slugfest against Rockies

Every day until Opening Day arrives, Phillies Nation will take a daily look back at a regular season victory from that particular day in history that you can watch in full in lieu of live Phillies baseball. Think of it is as your daily Phillies watch recommendation.

It was expected to be a rough night for the 1996 Phillies. After coming off a 6-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at the Vet, the team flew to Denver to face Larry Walker, Dante Bichette and the Colorado Rockies. With 21-year-old right-hander Rich Hunter on the mound for the Phillies, the stacked Rockies lineup was expected to go off. That’s exactly what happened but it wasn’t enough to earn the victory in the opener of a three-game series.

The offense came out swinging, taking advantage of the favorable hitting conditions at Coors Field. Third baseman Todd Zeile led the way with a two-run double in the first and a solo home run in the fifth. With the 10-8 victory, the 1996 Phillies pulled even at .500 on the season.
