Phillies trade Austin Davis

The Phillies announced Wednesday that they have traded left-handed reliever Austin Davis to the Pittsburgh Pirates for a player to be named later and cash considerations.

Davis, 27, was designated for assignment on Friday to make room on the 40-man roster for the newly acquired right-handed relief pitcher David Hale.

His tenure in Philadelphia was nothing short of a disaster. He was serviceable in 2018, posting a 4.18 ERA and 3.68 FIP in 34 2/3 innings of work and struggled in 2019.

In 2020, Davis holds a 21.00 ERA in four appearances. Opponents batted .526 and had an OPS of 1.287 against the struggling left-hander this season.

In order to remain in the organization, Davis had to clear waivers. It appears the Pirates are taking a chance on Davis as a bounce-back candidate. He does possess a mid-90s fastball with a spin rate in the 85th percentile amongst MLB pitchers in 2019.

It’s so far unclear just how much cash the Phillies are getting in exchange for Davis. It’s important to keep in mind that only players who are apart of a club’s 60-man taxi squad can be traded. That means the Pirates may have to add a player to their roster pool and then trade him to the Phillies.
