Phillies to call up former No. 1 overall pick Mickey Moniak, per report

The Philadelphia Phillies will be calling up former No. 1 overall draft pick Mickey Moniak, according to a report by Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

The possibility of Moniak’s promotion was first hinted at by SportsRadio 94WIP‘s Jack Fritz.

Moniak, the first selection in the 2016 MLB draft, will be promoted from the alternate site in Lehigh Valley. He originally joined the alternate site at the end of August.

Since being selected out of high school by the Phillies in 2016, Moniak has struggled a fair amount offensively in the minor leagues. The left-handed hitter has posted an OPS of just .692 in four seasons in the minors.

Still, the 22-year-old is a quick runner with a good glove in the outfield, and is coming off his best season as a professional at the plate. Last year in Double-A Reading, Moniak tied a career high with 28 doubles, and hit a career-high 11 home runs and 13 triples.

A spot on the 40-man roster will have to be made for Moniak, who was set to become Rule-5 eligible after this offseason if not added to the 40-man roster.
