Phillies acquire MiLB reliever Braeden Ogle from Pirates

The Phillies’ first trade deadline move is a minor one.

They have acquired Triple-A reliever Braeden Ogle from the Pittsburgh Pirates, the team officially announced. They’re sending Low-A catcher Abrahan Gutierrez. Gutierrez was part of the original deal for Tyler Anderson that fell apart due to medical concerns raised by Pirates doctors on Cristian Hernandez, a Low-A pitching prospect involved in the deal.

Both players are Rule 5 eligible after this season.

Ogle, who turns 24 today, has a 3.13 ERA in 24 relief appearances this season. He has allowed one earned run in his last 13 innings of work. The 2016 fourth-round pick spent the entire 2020 season at the Pirates’ alternate site. He missed the majority of the 2018 season with shoulder inflammation.

There’s a chance Ogle could spend some time with the major-league club this year, especially in September when rosters expand from 26 to 28. The Phillies probably see him as a depth reliever that can throw some low leverage innings when manpower is a bit thin.
