Andrew McCutchen will reportedly sign with Brewers

After three seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, Andrew McCutchen is departing in free agency to join the Milwaukee Brewers.

The news was first reported by Daniel Álvarez-Montes of El Extrabase, and confirmed by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

McCutchen recently wrapped up a three-year/$50 million deal with the Phillies, during which he slashed .238/.343/.444 with 47 home runs, 143 RBIs, 146 walks, a .787 OPS and a 2.5 fWAR. The Phillies declined the $15 million club option on McCutchen’s contract for the 2022 season, and will instead pay him a $3 million buyout this season.

While his defensive metrics have declined, McCutchen remains a valuable offensive player, specifically against left-handed pitching. The 35-year-old slashed .293/.405/.622 with 15 home runs, 32 RBIs and a 1.027 OPS against lefties in 2021.

One of the greatest players in Pirates history, McCutchen made five All-Star teams and won the 2013 National League MVP during nine seasons in Pittsburgh. He’ll now return to the NL Central, perhaps to conclude his career.
