Phillies Nuggets: The latest on Wheeler, Vierling & more

Before the Philadelphia Phillies finish their series against the Seattle Mariners with a matinee at T-Mobile Park, here’s a series of updates on the team:

  • The Phillies recalled Bailey Falter from Triple-A Lehigh Valley Wednesday, with the 25-year-old lefty slated to toe the rubber for Joe Girardi and company against the Mariners. Falter has a 4.91 ERA in 7 1/3 innings for the Phillies in 2022.
  • Outfielder Matt Vierling was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley after Tuesday’s 5-4 loss to the Mariners. Seemingly, the Phillies could have designated Roman Quinn for assignment and hoped he passed through waivers, but they elected to send Vierling down instead. While Vierling is hitting just .170 in 2022, he has a 50% hard-hit percentage and just a .235 batting average on balls in play. Given his positional flexibility, Vierling is still likely to play a role for the Phillies in 2022.
  • According to Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Zack Wheeler is slated to start Thursday’s game for the Phillies at Chavez Ravine against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Last year’s National League Cy Young Award runner-up was placed on the COVID-related injured list on May 8.
  • Wheeler will start the first of a four-game weekend set in Los Angeles, followed by Kyle Gibson, Ranger Suárez and Aaron Nola in the next three games, per Lauber
. The Dodgers will send Tyler Anderson, Clayton Kershaw, Walker Buehler and Julio Urías to the mound in the series, so the Phillies have their work cut out for them.
