Former Philadelphia Phillies utility man Johan Camargo has signed a minor-league deal with the Kansas City Royals, the team announced Saturday morning.
As Simon Hampton of MLB Trade Rumors noted, one would think the slick-handed infielder will be invited to Major League Spring Training, though that isn’t specified in the tweet announcing the transaction.
Camargo was non-tendered by the Atlanta Braves last offseason, after spending parts of five seasons with the team. The Phillies inked him to a one-year/$1.4 million deal, looking to improve their bench depth.
In 52 games with the Phillies, Camargo slashed .237/.297/.316 with three home runs, 15 RBIs and a 0.4 WAR, per FanGraphs. Camargo played all four infield positions for the Phillies, grading out best at third base, where he posted three defensive runs saved in 90 2/3 innings. The 29-year-old would also appear in 41 games for Triple-A Lehigh Valley, driving in 23 runs but posting just a .609 OPS.
Ultimately, the addition of Edmundo Sosa and strong production from Nick Maton left Camargo without much of a shot at the big league level in the second half of the season. His final appearance as a Phillie came on July 29, and he elected free agency after being designated for assignment in late September.
