Bats wake up in series-clinching win over Dodgers

Facing an army of Dodger relievers — eight to be exact — Phillies hitters put bat to ball, playing small ball to take the lead early and sealed it with power and a big seventh inning to secure a series-clinching 7-3 win over the Dodgers.

The effort comes after getting shut out on Saturday and scoring a combined nine runs over the last four games.

The Phillies struck out 10 times but registered 13 hits this afternoon. Taijuan Walker threw five shutout innings and three Phillies backend relievers, Gregory Soto, Seranthony Domínguez and José Alvarado, all allowed at least one run to score.

But the Phillies were able to pull away thanks to a pivotal three-run bottom of the seventh.

It’s only appropriate that Nick Castellanos homered on the day a portion of I-95 collapsed in Northeast Phialdelphia.

Three singles in the first gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead. Bryce Harper drove in a run on a 71.1 mph fly ball he got in front of to shallow left field that dropped in front of David Peralta.

Bryson Stott, who has five hits over his last two games, drove in two on a base hit in the third. Both Harper and Trea Turner were in scoring position on a double steal. He later tripled home a run as part of a three-run seventh inning.

Garrett Stubbs did what he does best — bunt for a hit. His fourth bunt single of the season scored Stott to give the Phillies a 4-0 lead.

Turner, Castellanos, Harper, Stott and Brandon Marsh all recorded multi-hit games. Marsh made a huge catch in center field to save two runs for Walker in the top of the third.

The Phillies (32-33) will head west to Arizona to take on the Diamondbacks. They finished the six-game homestand with a 5-1 record.

Shibe Vintage Sports Notes

  • Per the Phillies, Walker has the longest scoreless innings streak by a Phillies pitcher this year at 12.
  • Turner recorded his 17th multi-hit game of the season. He’s second behind Chicago’s Dansby Swanson among National League shortstops in multi-hit games.
  • The Phillies picked up a game in the NL East standings on the first-place Atlanta Braves, who dropped their series final to the Nationals 6-2. The Braves still have an eight-game lead over the Phillies in the standings.
