FINAL: Phillies 8, Tigers 3
The Phillies $300-million leadoff man might’ve found a home in the clean-up spot.
Shortstop Trea Turner, who has struggled at the top of the lineup in his first year in Philadelphia, was moved to the four-hole on Saturday. He looked the part for that role on Monday, putting on a power display in his best game for his new team to date.
Turner went 4-for-5 in the fourth spot against the Detroit Tigers, his two home runs helping propel the Phillies to an 8-3 victory in the first of a three-game interleague series at Citizens Bank Park. He recorded three RBIs while hitting solo shots.
Right-hander Aaron Nola carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before losing the bid on a three-run homer to old friend Nick Maton, but looked sharp for most of the night as he earned the win for Philadelphia (28-32), its third straight.
Turner got the scoring started in the bottom of the first, singling home current leadoff hitter Kyle Schwarber off the glove of Tigers shortstop Javier Báez and into left field. Nick Castellanos then hit an RBI double in the second, and Turner went deep in the third to make it a 3-0 game.
After Bryce Harper singled home a run but was thrown out at second, Turner blasted another long shot to deep left field to extend the lead to five runs.
Nola was dealing, allowing just three runs and striking out 12 batters in seven innings. He was unhittable through six as he faced the minimum until the seventh. But after a walk and an error to start the inning, Nola hung a two-out, two-strike curveball to the former Phillie Maton, who smashed it over the right-field wall to end the bid.
Nola escaped the seventh with his final strikeout, and the Phillies added with additional insurance in the bottom of the inning on a J.T. Realmuto RBI double and a run-scoring single by Edmundo Sosa. Philadelphia then handed the ball to Seranthony DomÃnguez and Andrew Vasquez to complete the win out of the bullpen with an inning apiece.
