Watch: Phillies sweep Tigers thanks to ninth-inning comeback

Up until the very end, it was a very rough night on offense for the Phillies.

23-year-old bulk starter Reese Olson gave up only one run on three hits over five innings against the Phillies in his second career outing. They had only three baserunners through the first five innings. The first run of the game was a close call sacrifice fly to score Kyle Schwarber in the sixth. They struck out eight times.

After a rare rough ninth inning from Craig Kimbrel, the Phillies offense needed a rally to secure a sweep against the Detroit Tigers.

Bryce Harper got it started against tough closer Alex Lange with a first-pitch double. The Phillies took advantage of Lange’s lack of feel for the strike zone and piled up on baserunners. Turner drew a walk and after J.T. Realmuto swung at ball four to record the first out, Bryson Stott reached first on an infield hit.

Brandon Marsh tied the game on a sacrifice fly to left. Kody Clemens, who had a couple rough moments at first base late in the game, had a chance for redemption.

The former Tiger finished it with a single down the right field line to secure a series sweep for the Phillies. They’ll head into the Dodgers series with some momentum and a chance to get back over .500 with another sweep.

“They really bear down. They are poised,” Rob Thomson said. “That’s what I really like about this club.”
